In English, the word “pig” has many idioms (习语). Now, let's learn some of them.
Let's begin with some very interesting expressions. We all know pigs spend a large amount of time eating. As a result, many pigs are fat. In English, we use the idiom “eat like a pig” to describe people who eat a lot. But it can be rude to use this idiom.
Another interesting idiom to learn is “putting lipstick (口红) on a pig”. While you think this expression describes a beautiful thing, the opposite is true. We use this idiom to say that no matter how well we decorate an ugly product, it is still ugly. Even the most expensive lipstick cannot fix it!
“Pigs might fly” is an idiom widely used in daily life. It's used to show that you do not believe something will ever happen. For example, Rick has been smoking for twenty years. Once he said he would give it up. His friends all laughed and said, “Yes, and pigs might fly.”
The last idiom we are going to learn is “guinea pig” (豚鼠). The guinea pig is actually not a pig. It is a rat that has short legs and no tail. Many children keep the animal as a pet. But if we say someone is used as a guinea pig, it means new ideas, methods, or medical treatments are tested on them.

Recently, a research team from Nanjing Agricultural University has invented Xunzi, a large language model (LLM) and XunziChat along with Gulian, a leading ancient Chinese text publisher.
When asked why he and his partners made the large language model, Wang Dongbo, the leader of the research team, explained, “Traditional Chinese characters, the top to bottom design, the absence of punctuation (标点符号) are all difficulties that readers have to get over when they read traditional texts.”
To create the LLM Xunzi, Wang and his partners first needed to do a lot of research. Since 2013, his team has worked hard to digitize Chinese classics like Siku Quanshu. “The hard work includes a large corpus (语料库) of two billion Chinese characters, which is necessary for the large language model,” said Wang.
But their efforts seem to have paid off. Now the LLM Xunzi can mark, translate, punctuate, and understand parts of ancient Chinese texts. It can even search for specific information, such as names, events, and places from a text.
Wang and his team have shared the LLM on GitHub and other websites, allowing users to download and use it for free. “We hope this will encourage more people to enjoy the beauty of traditional Chinese culture,” Wang explained.
9. ( )Which is difficult to read according to Wang Dongbo?
10. ( )Which of the following is TRUE about the LLM Xunzi?

You've been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you're a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don't know what it means? Following some easy steps can help you.
Say it
First sound it out. Then say it to yourself. 17. Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don't know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read, you have the word!
Use the context (上下文)
If this doesn't work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. 18. “Rain” and “the doorway” might give you helpful information.
19.______
If the context doesn't help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know? These can help you understand what it means. If you don't know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
Look it up
If the three steps above don't work, you can look it up. 20. —either a book or online.
Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don't know.
A.Use word parts. B.Look at the words. C.It might sound like a word you know. D.You can find the word in a dictionary E.If the word shelter doesn't look familiar, look at the words around it.

Some people say that it takes some talent(天分)to learn languages. In fact, using a language is a skill just like any other. And as long as you are interested in that skill and keep practising, you will see amazing results. Here's the story of Yuen Ren Chao, a great language learner who changed the world.
From a young age, Chao moved around a lot with his family, and learned to speak and understand different Chinese dialects(方言).
In 1910, Chao went to America for the first time to study at Cornell University. There he studied maths and physics while also staying interested in languages. Before leaving China, he could speak English well. By the time of his graduation, he could speak French and German and read Greek and Latin.
He returned to China in 1920 to teach at Tsinghua University. In his My Linguistic Autobiography, he wrote about his ability to learn a Chinese dialect quickly. One year later, he went to the United States again. In 1925, he again returned to China, teaching at Tsinghua University.
In the US, Chao taught Chinese to university students and used his personal language learning method: pay attention to the spoken language first, and read aloud as much as possible.
Later on in the twentieth century, other researchers agreed that reading aloud has great advantages in learning languages.

As students, we sometimes feel it boring to do homework every day, so doing creative homework can make us happier and more interested in English.
I have many good ideas about creative English homework because English is my favorite subject. Firstly, we can learn to sing an English song and sing it in class. In this way, we can learn more words. Secondly, if we draw mind maps to review our English notes, we will remember them well. Thirdly, it's fun to make a video to introduce our traditional Chinese culture in English. We can post it online so that more foreigners can know about our great country.
I hope we can have more creative English homework in the future.
