Thanks for your message. Yes, I'm having __21__ great time on my student exchange programme in France. I was a bit nervous before __22__ arrived here, but there was no need to be. My host family is really nice. They try to make me feel at home. The grandmother knows that I miss Chinese food a lot. So she actually learned __23__! She also has a teenage granddaughter about my age who is really kind. She always talks to me in French __24__ me practise. You wouldn't believe how __25__ my French has improved. Although I still make lots of __26__, it doesn't worry me as it used to.
My __27__ problem of all is learning how to act at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are very different __28__ the way they are at home.
For example, you shouldn't put your elbows on the table. When I first arrived here, I thought that __29__ pretty strange. But now I'm used to it.
Another example is that it's impolite to say you're full. If you don't want any more food, you should just say, “That was delicious.” I have to say that I find it difficult to remember everything, __30__ I'm getting used to it.
I don't find French customs so strange any more.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Lin Hui

When I first arrived in China, I knew little Chinese. And some of the Chinese words I __31__ had something to do with food. I learned the names of a few dishes, but still didn't know most of the things I saw on Chinese restaurant menus. Luckily, there were __32__.
Nearly every restaurant menu in China has pictures of food __33__ it. But the menus of many restaurants I've been to in the US don't. What is the __34__ for the difference
One thing I've definitely (明确地) __35__ about China is that food is a bigger part of their culture than it is in the US. A common way to __36__ someone in China is to ask them if they've eaten yet. Food is just a bigger deal here—and having pictures of food on menus is part of that. Some menus are almost like works of art, with beautiful photos.
Another thing is the __37__ of the dishes. Chinese dishes sometimes have fanciful (别出心裁的)names like “palace guard chicken” or “three fresh things from the soil”. These are interesting names, but they don't really tell you __38__ the dishes are like. Therefore, it's __39__ to have pictures so that you can actually see what you are going to eat.
There are __40__ even more reasons. All I know is that I was very thankful to have those picture menus when I first came to China years ago.

Once an Englishman was in Italy. He could speak little Italian. One day while he was walking in the street, he felt hungry and went into a restaurant. When the waiter came, the Englishman opened his mouth, put his fingers into it, took them out again and moved his lips.In this way, he meant to say “bring me something to eat”.But the waiter brought him a lot of things to drink—first tea, then coffee, then milk, but no food.
The Englishman was sad because he was not able to tell the waiter that he was hungry. He was ready to leave the restaurant when another man came in.The man put his hands on his stomach, and the body language was clear enough for the waiter. In a few minutes, the waiter brought him a large plate of bread and meat.
Finally the Englishman had his meal in the same way.

You should arrive on time or less than five minutes late. Don't get there early. If you expect to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call the host and let him know. Try to be relaxed and polite at table. If you don't know how to use the knife and fork, don't be nervous. You can watch others and follow them. If you still have no idea, ask the person next to you.

第二节:Dear Alice,
I am glad to know that you are coming to China as an exchange student next month.I'd like to share some cultural differences between China and the West.
Firstly, instead of using knives and forks, using chopsticks to have meals is common in China, so you might want to get used to it quickly.Meals are usually shared with others, so don't be surprised if everyone eats from the same dishes.Secondly, English relies on word order while Chinese depends on tones. It would be helpful if you try to learn some basic phrases like “nihao” and “xiexie”.Thirdly, unlike many American students, we usually wear school uniforms.
As for my advice, you should try local foods bravely, practise simple Chinese expressions, and follow school dress codes.Don't worry—everyone is friendly!
I'm sure you'll love your time here.See you soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
