Politeness helps us communicate better. When we were little kids, our parents taught us to say “please”, “thank you”, “excuse me”, “sorry” and other polite expressions. Because they know politeness is important for our development. For English learners, it s also a good idea to learn polite language expressions. Here are two pieces of advice for you. Use modal verbs. When we use some modal verbs, like “would”, “could” or “may”, we can change a direct question into a polite request. For example, when we want to express “Pass me the salt.”, we can say “Could you please pass me the salt ” When we want to ask “Where is the bookstore ”, we can say “Could you please tell me where the bookstore is ” Change the tense (时态). This way may be strange—but it s true. In order to be more polite, speakers often change the tense. In English, the present simple tense (一般现在时) sounds too direct, so we can change the present tense into the past tense to show politeness. For example, when we say “Do you have time tomorrow ”, we can say “I wondered if you would have time tomorrow.” These are the suggestions for the language. Polite actions can also bring us benefits. They can make us feel happy and improve our relationships with others. So let s be polite and be a better person!
