It was described as “the best job in the natural world”: an expedition botanist (远征植物学家) for Cambridge University Botanic Garden who would follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and go on plant-collecting adventures across international borders.
“I was already working as a tree seed collector for the Millennium Seed Bank at Kew Gardens, collecting native trees from across the UK, and I’d done a lot of European plant exploring,” said Jeffery, 31. Realizing he had the right skills for the unique role, he decided to apply.
Jeffery was appointed in March; it is believed to be the first time a British botanic garden has hired an expedition botanist in modern history. He is excited about exploring the world and hopes to make discoveries with the help of the expert botanists he will encounter. “It would be really cool to find a new species,” he said. “Obviously, the people from the country we’re working in would be best placed to find that, but just to be there when it happens.”
He recently returned from his first expedition to Croatia. Seeds they brought home included Erysimum infirmum, a cotonflower that is rare in Croatia but grows well in the UK. “Working alongside local botanists on such expeditions means seeds and knowledge are shared globally, helping to ensure threatened plant populations can be protected and boosted in a plant’s country of origin, as well as in Cambridge,” Jeffery said.
After an expedition to South Africa this summer, he plans to collect more wild seeds from across the country, the interest about Croatia is that because of the environmental gradient. Croatia, “What’s so interesting about Croatia is that because of the environmental gradient across the country, the coast has a dry Mediterranean climate and as you go inland it becomes much milder,” he said.
At the border between the two climates, plants that like cooler, wetter conditions grow next to Mediterranean plants’ dry, heat. And the species overlap (重叠) quite considerably — so the plants growing at those borders potentially have the capacity to deal with both climates to some degree.
4. What do we know about the job as expedition botanist from the first two paragraphs
A. It appeals to tree seed collectors highly.
B. It involves gathering plants worldwide.
C. It offers the best choice for adventure seekers.
D. It aims at following Charles Darwin’s footsteps.
5. What does the underlined “that” refer to in paragraph 3
A. The help of the expert botanists.
B. The exploration of the natural world.
C. The discovery of a new species.
D. The adventure of an expedition lover.
6. What is a benefit of working with local botanists according to Jeffery
A It prevents danger from wild animals.
B. It strengthens protection of rare plants.
C. It facilitates the study of climate change.
D. It offers chances to learn local folk customs.
7. What may border plants’ exposure to different climates lead to
A. Their strong adaptability.
B. Their serious competition.
C. Their increase in number.
D. Their richness in variety.

When Kamara visits the Stategeld return shop, she is on a mission. She has been tasked by her aunt, who runs a nearby restaurant, with returning three large blue bags of bottles and cans. In just seven minutes she feeds the “reverse vending machine” these bags in, getting 55?(58), bringing in the more than 650?(59), which will go into her aunt’s business.
In the Netherlands, when consumers buy goods in a can, glass or plastic bottles, they pay a fee ranging from 15 cents to 25 cents depending on the type of container. This can be gotten back when you return the container to a “reverse vending machine”. But the machines sometimes don’t work, or are too small. Stores will also only accept packaging from brands they sell. And, unlike most countries with deposit (押金) return systems, only supermarkets have these machines.
Recent EU legislation sets an ambitious 90% collection rate for single-use plastic bottles and cans. According to Verpact, the organisation responsible for managing the collection and recycling of packaging waste, 77% of plastic drinks bottles and 84% of cans were returned last year in the Netherlands — high compared with many countries but still not high enough.
So this year, Verpact is trying something new, opening shops that are merely for returning plastic bottles and cans while glass must be taken elsewhere. The first Stategeld return store opened in May in Rotterdam, with a machine that can process up to 200 bottles and cans at once and more than a million deposits have been handed in since then. Amsterdam now houses two Stategeld stores.
Deposit return systems are also seen as helping create a more circular economy and can reduce litter. “There’s not a silver bullet,” Lamborst, the CEO of Verpact, said. “But we can make it more easy for people to get their deposit back and throw the cans and the bottles in the right way.”
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. Challenges faced by Netherlands’ supermarkets.
B. Problems with Netherlands’ deposit return systems.
C. Disadvantages of reverse vending machines in the Netherlands.
D. Pollution caused by three types of containers in the Netherlands.
9. What do we know about Stategeld stores
A. They sell reverse vending machines.
B. They only deal with plastic containers.
C. They accept packaging from only a few brands.
D. They gain high popularity among drink enthusiasts.
10. How does Lamborst sound in the last paragraph
A. Doubtful.
B. Sympathetic.
C. Ambiguous.
D. Optimistic.
11. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Deposit return systems help reduce pollution.
B. Stategeld return shops lead a new trend online.
C. Bottle return shops help handle packaging waste.
D. Verpact encourages recycling plastic drink bottles.

Recently, Robot Era, a Chinese robotics company, introduced STAR1, the world’s fastest bipedal (双足行走的) robot. It was capable of reaching and maintaining speeds of up to 8 mph (12.98 km/h).
Photos and videos of sneaker-wearing robot running through the Gobi Desert went viral on Chinese social media, inspiring all sorts of humorous reactions from the public. However, few people realized they were watching the world’s fastest humanoid (人形) robot in action.Developed by Robot Era, STAR1 is powered by high-torque motors and AI programs. It can handle all sorts of surfaces and environments, including sand and grassland. Its advanced motors help the robot move efficiently. Equipped with high-speed sensors and communication modules, the robot can process information about its surroundings in real time. What sets the robot apart from other bipedal robots in terms of speed is its footwear: a pair of simple and old-fashioned running shoes.
The STAR1 robot stands 5.6 feet tall, weighs around 143 pounds, and can run at a speed of 3.6 meters per second, making it the fastest bipedal robot ever created. It’s important to note that Chinese scientists achieved this impressive speed by giving the robot a pair of running shoes, which made a big difference. In a test, the sneaker-wearing robot was considerably faster than its “barefoot” competitor, even though it got off to a slower start. The sneaker-wearing robot dealt with difficult terrain of the Gobi Desert better and finished in front.
Earlier this year, Robot Era’s XBOR-L became the first humanoid robot to climb the Great Wall of China. Climbing sections of the Great Wall, the robot handled uneven terrain, winding stairs, and dark archways.
Possible applications for the robot are in construction and disaster relief. Robot Era, also known as Beijing Xingdong Era Technology, develops and commercializes humanoid robots and embedded intelligence technologies.
12. What can we learn about STAR1 from the first two paragraphs
A. It is adapted to various situations.
B. It has become very popular in China.
C. It can adjust to a new kind of energy.
D. It can transform based on the environment.
13. What makes STAR1 move faster than other robots of its kind
A. Its advanced motors.
B. Its weight.
C. Its high-tech programs.
D. Its footwear.
14. What does the underlined word “terrain” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. A sandstorm.
B. A dry land.
C. A natural landform.
D. A sudden flood.
15. Which of the following may the author agree with
A. The STAR1 has made a difference to man.
B. Robot Era is taking the lead in developing AI.
C. The STAR1 is employed in removing disasters.
D. Robot Era tries to have humanoid robots hit the market.

Lisa’s violin had once belonged to her mom, until the day Mom left and never came back.
Now, it lay forgotten in the closet, its case thick with dust. “It just sits in a violin,” Lisa would tell her grandma when asked, yet she couldn’t help but steal glances at the case now and then, memories of Mom playing “Twinkle Twinkle” as she brushed Lisa’s hair floating back.
Last week, the music teacher, Ms. Carter, announced a talent show, which would take place in a month. “Any instrument, any song,” she said. Lisa’s throat tightened — she’d secretly tried playing on a friend’s violin once, but she had no instrument of her own. After school, she lingered (流连忘返) in the music room, her finger tracing the piano keys. “You should join,” Ms. Carter urged, handing her a flyer (传单). “I’ve heard you sing in class. You have a good ear.”
That night, Lisa found Grandma on the sofa, holding the violin case. The dust was gone, and the leather case shone brightly, just like it used to. “I polished it,” Grandma said softly.
Lisa’s chest felt tight. “I don’t know how to play,” she whispered. Grandma opened the case — inside, the violin shone a warm brown, with a small scratch on the neck that Lisa remembered from childhood. “Your mom left something here,” Grandma said, pulling out a folded note. Lisa unfolded it, and Mom’s handwriting met her eye: “For the day you’re ready to play.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Croatia, “What’s so interesting about Croatia is that because of the environmental gradient across the country, the coast has a dry Mediterranean climate and as you go inland it becomes much milder,” he said.
At the border between the two climates, plants that like cooler, wetter conditions grow next to Mediterranean plants’ dry, heat. And the species overlap (重叠) quite considerably — so the plants growing at those borders potentially have the capacity to deal with both climates to some degree.

【答案】Dear Lisa,
I’m glad to hear you want to set up an Agony Aunt Column in our school’s English newspaper. In my opinion, this is a wonderful idea. Many students face problems like study pressure or friendship troubles but don’t know who to talk to. The column can be a great platform for them to seek help.
I suggest you invite some teachers or senior students with rich experience to give advice. Also, it’s better to keep the contributors’ identities secret to make students feel safe to share.
I’m looking forward to the column helping more students solve their problems and make our school life more enjoyable.
Yours,
Li Hua

Finally, the big day arrived.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
She held the note to her chest, tears in eyes. All those memories of Mom came flooding back — Mom playing the violin softly while she danced around the living room, Mom teaching her simple notes even though she was too young to understand. With Grandma’s encouraging smile, Lisa made up her mind to learn to play the violin for the talent show. Every day after school, she locked herself in her room, following online tutorials and practicing basic chords. Her fingers ached at first, and there were times she wanted to give up, but she’d look at Mom’s note and keep going. Grandma even found a music teacher who agreed to give her free lessons on weekends.
Finally the big day arrived. Lisa stood backstage, holding the violin tightly, her hands slightly shaking. When it was her turn, she walked onto the stage, and the audience’s eyes turned to her. Taking a deep breath, she began to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” — the song Mom used to play for her. As the familiar melody filled the hall, Lisa felt Mom’s presence beside her. When she finished, the audience burst into loud applause. Grandma was in the front row, wiping tears of pride. Lisa smiled, knowing she had not only fulfilled her own wish but also connected with Mom in a special way.
