A. Lesson Objectives:
This lesson is designed to help the students decode on Phonics rules in words containing the vowel letters when they are followed by a consonant. By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to i) Learn to pronounce the five vowel letters in closed syllables. ii) use them in different activities.
B. Teaching Procedures;
1. Revision
Given twelve sets of words containing vowel sounds in open syllables, Ss will visually and auditorily recall the phonic rules in words with an open syllable. Meanwhile, Ss will revise how to spell a word with the help of IPA.
2. New items
Activity 1 Work out the rule
Before starting the lesson, I will review a phonics rule which was already learned in a previous spelling lesson. Given five sets of words, Ss will pick out the open-syllable ones and generalize the phonics rule of closed syllable. T offers some help if necessary
Activity 2 Story telling
T presents a story to Ss with gestures, and involve the phonics of five vowel letters in closed-syllable words. Ss will orally and auditorily decode the phonics rule using the tactile and kinesthetic senses.
Activity 3 Read and point
Ss play a game to practice the sounds of vowels in closed syllables.
Activity 4 Comparison
Ss read the individual sounds of the words with closed syllables according the rules learnt and compare the sounds of vowels.
3. Consolidation
Ss are asked to finish off the Exx on P27 of the textbook, putting the words under the correct sound groups. Ss write out the sounds in the two units. T directs Ss to do the challenges.
4. Home assignment
T sets Ss home assignments for guided practice as follows to help enhance the materials conducted in class.
