The word "manifest" has been chosen as Cambridge Dictionary Word of the Year for 2024.
The word "manifest" isn't new, it first meant "clear" or "easily noticed" in the 1400s. But its modern meaning—to help you imagine achieving something you want, in the belief that doing so will make it more likely to happen—was first used in 2000. This is the popular meaning today.
Cambridge Dictionary's Wendalyn Nicols explained that the Word of the Year was chosen based on three points: how popular the word was during the year, how it related to important events, and how interesting it was as a word.
And "manifest" was surely popular—the word was looked up almost 130,000 times on the Cambridge Dictionary website in 2024. Its popularity was thanks to famous people like singer Dua Lipa, US gymnast Simone Biles and England soccer player Ollie Watkins, who all said "manifesting" helped them achieve their goals.
"Manifesting is a big thing for me," said Dua Lipa. 2024 was a big year for her. As she performed at one of the largest greenfield music festivals in the world, she shared how she had "manifest" the moment. "I've written this moment down and wished for it and dreamt it and worked so hard."
But some experts aren't a big fan of manifesting. Sander van der Linde believes manifesting is just "magical thinking" without proving(证明)it truly works.

A. Clear or easily noticed.
B. To imagine realizing your dream through belief.
C. A list of passengers on a ship.

C. Its spelling difficulty.

A. Famous people used it in public.
B. It was related to a piece of news this year.
C. It was the name of a popular music festival.
74. Why does the writer mention "Dua Lipa" in Paragraph 5
A. To show how she performed at a music festival.
B. To give an example of how people use "manifest" in real life.

Have you ever heard of the word "kidult" It refers to an adult who buys toys meant for children for themselves. 1 The 23 - year - old woman travelled from London to New York just to buy an unusual stuffed toy(毛绒玩具). Although she already had 35 of them, she wanted to collect them.
In the past, people would typically stop playing with toys once they grew up. 2 It's quite normal for young adults to have big collections of stuffed toys. In fact, most stuffed toy buyers are between the ages 18 and 24.
3 However, Professor Joshua Dale doesn't think so. He says cute things, like stuffed toys, are "happiness generators(发生器)" for adults. "It's hard to just keep happy with everything going on in the world," Dale says. "If you look at something cute, though, it may cheer you up."
This doesn't mean that young people are childish, either. " 4 " Dale explains. "Childish behavior is bad for everyone, even children. But childlike behavior includes having a sense of wonder, and a thirst for new things. 5 Bringing childlike things into your daily life as an adult can be good for you."

For many people, winter holidays are a time to relax and have fun. However, this can also lead to weight gain(增加). "Putting on weight isn't just because of celebrations," says Christina Badarocco, a nutritionist(营养学家).
Some animals like to eat more to keep warm in cold weather, when food historically is more valuable. We human beings are just like them in this way. During winter, fresh fruits and vegetables are harder to find, so people often choose heavier and richer foods.
Badaracco also explains that in winter, people get less sunlight and spend more time indoors. This can slow down metabolism(新陈代谢), making it easier to put on weight.
People move less in cold days. They don't want to go outside to exercise or even drive to the gym. In fact, over one - third of Americans say they sleep more in winter.
When the weather gets colder and days become shorter, many people feel especially cold. So many people turn to warm drinks for comfort.
A survey found that people thought they would gain 5.5 pounds during the winter holiday, but research suggests that in fact, most people gained only around 1.5 pounds. "People always think that they will gain more weight over the holidays than they actually do, but the small gain weight over the holidays will add up over time if they don't lose it," Badaracco warns.
It is completely normal to have weight changes in a year. The key is to take action early. You can make an exercise plan, check your weight daily, or find a friend to stay together. "It's more important and useful to set small, slow and realistic goals. Small successes can lead to bigger achievements," says Badaracco.
