To pick up their children after school, some parents must leave work early or pay for extra(额外的) childcare. What's more, some kids can be bad-tempered(坏脾气的) when they don't get enough sleep. The modern escalator first appeared in 1900. By 1911, the "machine" had become a very important part of the London subway system(系统). There's an unwritten rule of riding any escalator: Stand on the right, walk on the left. This rule let tired people rest on one side, while others in a hurry walk on the other. The practice was once seen as a symbol of caring for others. But now, experts say this old habit causes problems.
So many people standing on the same side can cause uneven wear(不均匀磨损) to escalators. It's more possible for escalators to have breakdowns as a result.
The Nanjing Metro was among the earliest in China to put an end to the practice. "About 95 percent of our escalators have serious damage(损坏) on their right sides," the Nanjing Metro said in 2016.
What's more, escalator steps are often taller than staircases. Passengers walking on a running escalator are more likely to fall. Some numbers show that about three-quarters of escalator accidents take place when people walk on the moving escalator.
Besides, in 2015, the London Underground tested what would happen if everyone stood on both sides of an escalator. At Holborn Station, one of the busiest in London, they found that congestion(拥塞) dropped by 30%. Walking up the escalator at Holborn took 26 seconds, according to the Underground. By comparison, standing took 40 seconds. However, with everyone standing, the waiting time at the bottom(底部) was much shorter. It dropped from 138 seconds to just 59 seconds for most people.
Nowadays, more and more cities are changing their rules. People are asked to stand on either side of the escalator instead of walking on it.

These days, it seems that few people can live without smartphones. But these "close friends" of ours don't last very long. Most people upgrade(更新) their phones every couple of years. Upgrades require a lot of money and create a lot of e-waste for the Earth.
But things are about to change in the European Union(EU). Starting on June 23rd, every smartphone sold there must have a new label. It will help people save money and protect the Earth.
At the top of the label is an energy efficiency grade(能效等级), similar to those found on products such as TVs. Smartphones are graded from A to G. A means very energy-saving, and G means not energy-saving.
The label also shows how long the battery lasts on one charge and how many times you can charge the battery before it works worse. It tells consumers how much their phones are able to deal with drops, dust, and water. The phones are also graded on how easy they are to repair. The easier it is to take a phone apart and find spare parts(备件) for it, the higher its repair grade will be.
Along with this label, the EU is introducing strict "eco-design(环保设计) requirements". Spare parts must be kept available for up to seven years after a model is no longer in production. Software(软件) support must also be provided for at least five years.
The EU says these rules will cut carbon emissions(碳排放量) by 46 million tons. They will also help each family save about 150 euros (about ¥1,200) every year.

___________________________________________________________8. What can show us that a smartphone has a higher repair grade
