The Secret Language of Plants
Talking plants have long been a thing of myths and legends.
Many cultures have stories of talking trees that give advice as well as warnings to people.
Alexander the Great and Marco Polo were said to have visited such a tree in India.
And in some modern stories, such as the film Avatar, trees can communicate with animals and people.
With us long believing that talking plants are fantasy, new research has revealed something amazing: it appears that plants can communicate after all.
传说,传奇(故事) ③“主(Many cultures)谓(have)宾(stories)”。介词短语of talking trees是stories的后置定语;现在分词talking作前置定语,修饰trees;that give advice as well as warnings to people为定语从句。
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other.
This happens when a plant, say a bean plant, gets attacked by insects.
The plant releases tiny amounts of chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten.
This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I'm being attacked!”
When another bean plant detects the chemicals from its injured neighbour, it starts to release its own, different chemicals.
Some of these chemicals drive insects away.
Others attract insects—the wasps!
The wasps kill the insects that are eating the bean plants.
Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow crops without pesticides.
杀虫剂,农药 ⑦“主(It)谓(has been known)”。for some time作时间状语。It是形式主语;that plants ... each other是主语从句作真正的主语。从句结构是“主(plants)谓(use)宾(chemicals)”, to communicate with each other是不定式短语作目的状语。
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate.
People can't hear these sounds, but plants are making them.
Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chilli plants do this.
They also “listen” to the noises from other plants.
A chilli plant can tell if a neighbouring plant is helpful, or unfriendly.
Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water, indicating drought is arriving.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest.
Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”.
It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use.
While the Internet is a worldwide network of computers linked by cables and satellites, the wood wide web is linked underground by fungi.
This fungal network links the roots of different plants to each other.
Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other.
For example, some pine trees can send food to smaller pine trees to help them grow.
真菌的 “主(plants)谓(can share)宾(information and even food)”。Using the wood wide web是现在分词短语作方式状语。
But just like our own Internet, the wood wide web has its own version of “cybercrime”.
Plants can steal food from each other, or spread poisons to attack other plants.
Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other.
Who knows Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
网络犯罪 “主(scientists)谓(will learn)宾(how to ... ‘firewall’)”。to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web
link v.

Square foot gardening is a type of gardening made popular by Mel Bartholemew. It is based on the idea that the wide rows in traditional gardening are a waste of time, work, water and area.It shows that quality vegetables can be grown in less space with less work. In this method, the garden space is divided into “beds”. Each bed is 4’×4’ (16 sq ft) (120cm×120cm, 1.4 m2). The beds are separated by paths (小路). These beds are further divided into squares of about one square mon spacing is one plant per square for larger plants such as broccoli, four per square for medium large plants like lettuce, nine per square for medium small plants like spinach, and sixteen per square for small plants such as onions and carrots. The weeds (杂草) are removed from the beds and the plants are watered from the paths. This stops the soil from being compacted (压紧).
Benefits of square foot gardening:
Much less work. Normal gardening needs heavy tools to loosen the soil. In this method, the soil is never compacted and it remains loose.
Water savings. The loose ground holds the water better. This type of garden needs water less often than other methods. Also, water is placed very near the plant roots. Less water is wasted.
Very few weeds. The vegetables form a living mulch (覆盖物) and shade out many weeds before they can start to grow.
Pesticides (杀虫剂) are not needed. Natural ways to keep pests away work very well in a close space. Many different types of plants in a small area also stop plant diseases from spreading easily.

Sam was a junior high school student. He lived in a community in Charlotte and usually had little exposure to country life. So much of what he knew about plants came from textbooks. Sam was a kind hearted person. He longed for a chance to explore nature and he wanted to do his part to beautify the world.
Finally, the opportunity came. On Arbor Day (植树节), his class organized a trip to a local village to plant trees. Sam was excited about it and couldn't wait to tell his mom the good news. So the next day, Sam and his mom went to buy some tools for planting trees, including a shovel (铲), a bucket, gloves and so on.
On the day of the event, Sam and his classmates arrived early at the starting point. It was a beautiful day and everyone looked particularly happy. With the tools in hand, Sam got into the bus with everyone else and headed off to their destination.
As soon as they reached the village, all the students were divided into three teams by their teacher. One team was responsible for planting the trees, one team for shovelling the soil and one team for watering the trees. At the teacher's command, everyone started to do their job.
However, it was the first time that many of the students had taken part in planting trees, so they had no idea about how to start. Of course, Sam was one of them. Fortunately, their teacher was a middle aged man from the countryside who had some knowledge of planting trees. In order to set an example to the students, the teacher started to plant trees himself. After watching the teacher plant the trees, everyone also became busy. Before long, they planted hundreds of trees. Sam watched very carefully, not wanting to miss any of the details. Finally, Sam learned how to plant trees by himself and felt happy.

He went home and told his mom he wanted to save those trees. So he took the tools that he had used to plant the trees. With the skills taught by his teacher, he worked with his mom to replant those trees. They helped the trees survive.
The neighbours praised Sam for what he had done. Sam told them about his experience of planting trees. But he owed all the kindnesses to his teacher and mother. He explained that because of his teacher and mother, he learned the skills and saved the trees. The neighbours were very happy to hear that. They said Sam was a role model and that they would ask their children to learn the skills from Sam. Sam felt proud and decided to develop a better community and protect the environment with them.

This happens when a plant, say a bean plant, gets attacked by insects.
The plant releases tiny amounts of chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten.

Some of these chemicals drive insects away.
Others attract insects—the wasps!

1.Why is the gardening called square foot gardening
A.Because vegetables are grown in the squares.
B.Because you can grow vegetables anywhere by using it.
C.Because the smallest bed in it is only one square foot.
D.Because the places where vegetables are grown are too small.
根据第一段中的“It shows that quality vegetables can be grown in less space with less work. In this method, the garden space is divided into ‘beds’.”以及“These beds are further divided into squares of about one square foot.”
2.What can we infer from the text
A.Loose soil is good for plant growth.
B.Onions and carrots need more space.
C.Compacted soil is important to some plants.
D.Square foot gardening needs some heavy tools.
根据第一段最后一句和下文“Normal gardening needs heavy tools to loosen the soil.” 故选A。
3.Why are there fewer weeds in square foot gardening
A.Because weed killers are used.
B.Because weeds can't get sunlight.
C.Because weeds are short of water.
D.Because weeds have been removed.

A few days later, a storm damaged some young trees in the community. After seeing what had happened, Sam felt that it was time for him to put the skills of planting trees he had learned to use.
