Does it seem like everyone you know is, too busy, or tired Do you feel like you never have time to just relax Do you daydream about being on vacation Well, you are not alone. Most people have too much to do, and too little time. It is not surprising that stress is a common part of everyone's life.
We often think that a vacation will help us relax. But most of us find that after a few days back at work or school, we feel the usual stress. The question is: how can we make relaxation and leisure (休闲) time part of our daily lives Here are some ways to reduce stress in your everyday life.
Exercise! Exercise is one of the simplest and best ways to reduce stress. When we exercise, our body produces natural relaxants into our bloodstream. Our stress level is then reduced. If your day is stressful, take 20 minutes or more for a walk, a bike ride, or a sport.
Get enough sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, you may feel more nervous or get angry more easily. In addition, you will have a harder time concentrating (集中注意力) and doing your work. When you can’t work well, you create stress for yourself.
Enjoy a sense of humor. It is good to have a good laugh about something that relaxes us. Laughter breaks worry and helps us take a break. Take time to read the cartoon stories in the newspaper, watch a funny TV play or movie, or trade jokes with a friend.
Eat properly. If you don’t eat healthy food, your body will feel tired and run down. Eat normal meals, and don’t eat too much sugary food. Sugar gives quick energy, but soon you will feel tired again.
Practice relaxation methods. There are many different relaxation methods that can help you reduce stress. Some methods just take a few minutes, and can be done at any time during the day. Other methods require more time, and space for quiet time. Some common relaxation methods are: deep breathing and thinking, imagining peaceful scenes, massage (按摩), or yoga.
Make time for some free-time activity every day. What do you like to do to relax yourself Is there something you enjoy doing that always makes you feel less stressful Think about hobbies or activities that give you pleasure.

Fish Ears Tell Fish Tales
Fish have ears. Really. They’re quite small and have no opening to the outside world, carrying sound through the body. For the past seven years, Simon Thorrold, a university professor, has been examining fish ears, small round ear bones called otoliths (耳石).
As fish grow, so do their otoliths. Each day, their otoliths gain a ring of calcium carbonate (碳酸钙). By looking through a microscope and counting these rings, Thorrold can determine the exact age of a young fish. As a fish gets older, its otoliths no longer get daily rings. Instead, they get yearly rings, which can also be counted, giving information about the fish’s age, just like the growth rings of a tree.
Ring counting is nothing new to fish scientists. But Thorrold has turned to a new direction. He is examining the chemical elements of each otolith ring.
The daily ring gives us the time, but chemistry tells us about the environment in which the fish swam on any given day. These elements tell us about the chemistry of the water that the fish was in. It also says something about water temperature, which determines how much of these elements will gather within each otolith ring.
Thorrold can tell, for example, if a fish spent time in the open ocean before entering the less salty water of coastal areas. He can basically tell where fish are spending their time at any given stage of history.
In the case of the Atlantic croaker, a popular saltwater food fish, Thorrold and his assistant have successfully followed the travelling of young fish from mid-ocean to the coast, a journey of many hundreds of miles.
This is important to managers in the fish industry, who know nearly nothing about the whereabouts of the young fish for most food fish in the ocean. Eager to learn about his technology, fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears.
4.What can we learn about fish ears from the text
A.They are small soft rings. B.They are not seen from the outside.
C.They are openings only on food fish. D.They are not used to receive sound.
5.Why does the writer compare fish to trees
A.Trees gain a growth ring each day. B.Trees also have otoliths.
C.Their growth rings are very small. D.They both have growth rings.
6.Why is it important to study the chemistry of otolith rings
A.The elements of the otoliths can tell the history of the sea.
B.Chemical contents of otoliths can tell how fast fish can swim.
C.We can know more about fish and their living environment.
D.Scientists can know exactly how old a fish is.
7.How would you understand the underlined part in the last paragraph “fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears”
A.They are very interested in Thorrold’s research findings.
B.They want to know where they can find fish.
C.They lend their fish for chemical studies.
D.They wonder if Thorrold can find growth rings from their ears.
Finally, the big day arrived. I was going to spend four months in France, learning French. Alice, my sister, was going as well. We arrived at the airport, feeling nervous and excited.
The flight went by quickly because I was so busy talking with Alice about our trip and how different French life might be from life back home. We decided that we shouldn’t spend too much time together in France. We knew we wouldn’t learn much French if we did that. Even though we agreed, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to say much the whole time I was in France. However, when my host family met me, I knew from the mother’s warm smile that everything would be OK.
It was still a bit stressful at first to try to understand and communicate, but after a couple of weeks it became easier. I spent a lot of time with a lovely girl who was a friend of the family, and we got on very well. In fact, I learned lots of interesting words from her, you know, the kind of things you don’t find in books! I had one shameful moment. I used the wrong word when I was talking to a waiter, but he was relaxed about it and told me not to be afraid of making mistakes.
When the time came to say goodbye to my host family, I was very sad to leave. However, I have brought back some wonderful memories from this experience. The most important thing I’ve learned is that if you’re open-minded and positive about learning a language, then it’s much easier. I’ve come back much more confident in my ability. I’ve even started watching a television show in French and I’m surprised to find that I can understand a lot more than before my stay in France.
8.Why didn’t the writer and Alice want to spend too much time together in France
A.Because they talked too much during the flight.
B.Because they didn’t get on well with each other.
C.Because they knew life in France would be different.
D.Because they wanted to get more chances to practice French.
9.How did the writer feel when she started her life in France
A.Relaxed. B.Stressed. C.Confident. D.Surprised.
10.From the experience, the writer learned ________.
A.how to make friends with strangers
B.how to live comfortably in a new country
C.to keep an active attitude toward language learning
D.to correct mistakes immediately after making them

Fraser Island is in Queensland, Australia, about 200 kilometres north of Brisbane.
It is a very important island because it is completely made of sand, but there is a long beach along the east coast. Planes arrive and leave from here.
The sand makes unusual shapes. There are hills made of sand called sandblows. Nothing grows on them. They move one or two metres a year from the northwest towards the southeast of the island, getting bigger and bigger. At other places on the island, such as Rainbow Gorge, The Cathedral and Red Canyon, the sandy rocks have different colours. Sometimes the rocks are so brown that they turn the sea brown, like coffee.
Surprisingly, the sandy island has a lot of different plants and animals. There are dark forests-eucalyptus woods, beautiful flowers and over a hundred lakes. There are many kinds of birds, like owls and curlews. There are many animals there, too, such as crocodiles, flying foxes and wild dogs called dingoes.
About 50,000 people visit the island every year to see the island’s beauty and nature. People enjoy camping and hiking there. Unluckily, the visitors create problems. They damage plants and frighten(惊吓)animals. Their sun cream(防晒霜)makes the water dirty. So it is necessary to manage the visitors. For example, people may not use motor boats or go fishing in the lakes, and they need official papers to drive there.

It is said that in the third century a Chinese man wrote about how to make gunpowder(火药). At first, it was used for making fireworks(烟花). At the end of the Tang Dynasty, people began to use it in wars. The way of making it was brought to the Arab world and Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Printing was developed in 1041~1048 in the Song Dynasty. A man named Bi Sheng carved characters(字符) on pieces of clay and wood. Then he put ink on them. After the characters were printed on paper, the pieces of clay or wood could be used again. This technology then spread to Korea, Japan and Europe.

In Lule , a city in northern Sweden, people are asked to say “hello” to each other more often. The new campaign (活动) is called S g hej!, meaning “say hello”. It is a simple way to connect people, but a very big step for the city.
Swedish culture values privacy (隐私) and interpersonal distance so much that it has caused loneliness especially in Lule where the sun only shines around three hours a day in the winter months. People usually like to stay warm at home alone. A study about Lule found that 45% of 16-to 29-year-olds were experiencing problems because of loneliness.
Koski, who works for the city, came up with the idea of the S g hej! campaign. “The city is developing fast and more people are coming. We don’t just want Lule to grow to be a big city. We also want it to be a safe, friendly and happy place where there’s culture, relaxing activities, and sports,” Koski said. “Greeting people makes them feel like they belong. Research shows that it has a good influence on health and makes people want to help each other. If you say hi to your neighbors, you are more likely to help them,” Koski said.
The activity is now being encouraged on buses and in schools. There are even workshops on how to greet one another. Many people agree that saying hello should be encouraged and believe that the more international the city becomes, the friendlier people will become. “It’s really good that people say hello to each other,” 61-year-old Pontus Wikstr m, said. “It means that people who meet without knowing each other becomes a little bit happier.”

Imagine you live in a smart city. Everything you need—schools, cinemas and parks—is all within a 10-minute walk. Many countries around the world are carrying out ideas similar to “10-minute city”. They have either come up with plans or have made it true.
China The idea of a “15-minute city” has come true in China. In July, Zhangyan Village built a “happy community (社区)”. The community is a 1,500-square meter area with a cafeteria, an entertainment (娱乐) center, a health center, a post office, and a restroom. All are within a 15-minute walk. According to online magazine Sixth Tone, the city plans to make such communities for nearly 99 percent of locals (当地人) by 2035. Other places are following this step. Thirty cities across the country will try out the idea of 15-minute communities in the future.
France Anne Hidalgo is the mayor (市长) of Paris. She wants to turn Paris into a 15-minute city. City travel is a key of the plan. In 2020, Paris built 60 km of temporary (临时的) cycle paths because of the COVID-19. Now people can use those paths forever. Under her plan, Paris will get rid of (消除) 72 percent of its on-street parking spaces for cars. Green spaces, gardens and playgrounds will replace them. The city will turn busy crossings into squares as well.
The USA Portland, a city in the state of Oregon, hopes to make 20-minute neighborhoods. People can reach places and services such as schools and parks by walking or biking for 20 minutes or less. According to the plan, about 11 percent of the city will be 20-minute neighborhoods. There will be more sidewalks (人行道) and greenways for bikes to ride.

Often called “a love poem in stone”, the Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful buildings ever made. It is also perhaps the most beautiful expression of love in the world.
The emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. They lived happily together for 18 years. Then, in 1631, Mumtaz died during the birth of their fourteenth child. Before she died, the emperor made her a promise. To remember her, he would build the most beautiful monument (纪念碑) in the world.
Building the Taj Mahal was a huge task. It is said that it took more than 20, 000 people and 1,000 elephants. They worked for over 20 years to build the monument and its central dome (穹顶) with the white marble (大理石).
In 1658, five years after the building was finished, Shah Jahan’s son became emperor. He put Shah Jahan in prison. Shah Jahan stayed there until his death in 1666. His body was then put in the Taj Mahal with the woman he loved.
There are many legends (传说) about the Taj Mahal. In one story, Shah Jahan had the builders’ hands cut off after the building was completed, so they could never build anything as beautiful as the Taj Mahal. Another says he also wanted to build a black Taj Mahal. These are interesting stories, but they are probably not true.
The love story between Shah Jahan and his wife ended sadly. But the monument to their love still stands today. Millions of tourists visit every year. They come to see the marble change color in the light of the rising sun or a full moon.

“Hey,” said the boy, whose name I couldn’t remember, sitting next to me. “Don’t worry. Take your time.” And so I did. But I still couldn’t correctly pronounce my Chinese name that was given by the teacher. I was so embarrassed on my first day of learning Chinese. I was so worried that I didn’t sleep well that night. My several years of writing has led me to become a school reporter. I knew that my Chinese classes would allow me to speak Chinese well. With the improvement of people’s living standards, traveling has become an important part of people’s life. More and more Chinese people choose to travel abroad to experience different cultures and scenery. According to a recent survey, the number of Chinese outbound tourists reached 150 million in 2023, and this number is still growing.

In addition, the problem of environmental pollution caused by tourism has also attracted people’s attention. To solve these problems, the Chinese government has launched some campaigns to promote civilized tourism. Travel agencies also provide tourists with pre-trip training to help them understand local customs and environmental protection knowledge.
