The big day is finally here. You and your team have made it to the final game of the soccer tournament (联赛). You’re ready to win... but so is the other team. Then, suddenly, someone scores! The game is over. The other team has won and gets a shiny gold cup. But then the coaches start giving out something else to you and the other players: participation awards (参与奖). Everyone reacts differently. Some cheer with pride. Others look disappointed. And you You don’t know how to feel...
Participation awards have been around since the 1920s, when they were invented to make sports safer for kids. That’s because when the first youth sports tournament was created in the early 1900s, games were even more competitive than they are today. Many kids were badly hurt in their effort (努力) to win. Adults were worried. Some schools even stopped holding sports programs completely.
But then came a solution: participation awards. The point was to take the focus away from winning and put it on other values, like teamwork and hard work, or sticking to something. Many people today say that’s why participation awards are still needed. “Winning isn’t everything,” says Kenneth Barish, a scientist who studies kids’ feelings and behavior. “The more important thing is to let kids know that we’re proud of them—not for winning, but for their effort. Praising (赞扬) effort has amazing influence. It makes it easier for young people to try new things without fear, learn from mistakes, and take on new challenges with a positive attitude.”
But some people worry that giving awards to everyone sends the wrong message. Some even believe it is time to toss them aside for good. In real life, people are not always rewarded for just showing up. After all, you don’t get an A just for going to class. Participation awards, some say, could teach kids to expect awards when they aren’t deserved (值得).

A marathon is a long running race of 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometres). The first Olympic Marathon was held in Athens. Now, many cities host their own marathons every year. Some of the best-known marathons around the world are the New York City Marathon, the Boston Marathon and the Tokyo Marathon. Among them, the Boston Marathon which started in 1897, is the oldest yearly marathon in the world. As time goes by, the sport has become more than just a race.
Themes of marathons add fun and meaning to the hard miles. Runners run for helping sick kids, celebrating important events, or just enjoying nature. There is a famous marathon in Gisborne, New Zealand, which is known for being the first city in the world to welcome the sunlight every day. Runners can greet the sunrise as they race along the golden sandy beaches.

Runners of all skill levels can sweat freely and push their limits in the race. Some routes are well planned for runners to explore the many sides of a city. For example, the route of the Great Wall Marathon takes the runners along the great wonder of the world. The race can be an amazing chance to get to know Beijing, its people and local food.

When you think about competitions, you might picture sports like basketball or football. But not all competitions are about sports. Some are unusual and fun!
One great example is Rock Paper Scissors. It is a game between two people. First, both players count to three. 18 The rule is easy: rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, and paper beats rock. Even though it seems simple, many players try to think of clever ways to win!
Some might think a Rock Paper Scissors competition sounds silly. Don’t worry. 19 For example, there is an event called Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake in England. It has been going on for over 200 years. In this event, hundreds of people run down a hill after a big wheel of cheese! Imagine the fun and excitement as everyone races to catch it.
20 In this event, players act like playing guitars in front of a cheering crowd and show off their best air guitar moves like real rock stars! The people in Finland love it!
Wales also has a fun competition called Bog Snorkelling. In this event, people wear funny clothes and move through muddy (泥泞的) water. 21
These are just a few examples of the crazy competitions around the world. 22 With proper training, you could be a winner in one of those competitions!
A.How do you like competitions
B.Do you want to try them someday
C.On three, they throw one of three hand signs.
D.The crowd goes wild as they cheer on the brave competitors!
E.There are many other strange competitions all around the world.
F.One of the most unusual competitions in China is Dragon Boat Racing.
G.There’s a competition called the Air Guitar World Championships in Finland.

Boxing is popular in many countries. Two fighters wear boxing gloves on their hands. The boxers hit each other until one is knocked out or until the final bell rings. Each part of the fight is three minutes long. It is called a round.
Thai boxing is different.
The boxing match begins with music. Then the two fighters kneel and pray to God. Next, they do a slow dance that copies the movements of Thai boxing. During this dance, each fighter tries to show the other that he is best. Then the fight begins. In Thai boxing, the fighters can kick with their feet and hit each other with their elbows and knees. Of course, they hit with their hands, too. Each round is three minutes long. Then the boxers have a two-minute rest. Most boxers can fight only five rounds because this kind of fighting is very difficult.
Thai boxing began over 500 years ago. If a soldier lost his weapons in a battle, he needed to fight with just his body. The soldiers learned how to use all the parts of their bodies. In 1560, the Burmese army captured Naresuan, the King of Thailand, in a war. King Naresuan was a very good boxer. He won his freedom from Burma by defeating all the best Burmese fighters. Do you often spend a lot of time with your parents My parents were always busy with their work. They had little time to stay with me. Then I joined a two-day club. What made the club special was that all the members were girls. The club was very useful and it changed my attitude (态度) towards life.
On the first morning, we needed to introduce ourselves first. But I used to be shy and quiet, so I almost said nothing. Then in the afternoon, I met a girl called Mary from Africa. She was humorous and from time to time told us funny stories that made us laugh a lot.
On the second day, the leader (领导者) made a great speech. Then he suggested playing a game called “Chocolate or Toys”. To our surprise, Mary asked for chocolate in the game. When she was asked to share her reason, she said sadly, “I’ve never had chocolate and my family has difficulty in buying one, so I want one for my sister.”
You couldn’t imagine how her words touched me. I realized how lucky I was. After all, I lived a happier life than Mary.
After hearing Mary’s story, I decided to lend her a hand. Next day, I took out my lucky money and bought some pencils for her. The 2025 Jiangsu Urban Football Super League (commonly known as “Su Chao”) kicked off at Zhenjiang Sports Exhibition Center Stadium on May 10th. As the top football event in Jiangsu Province, this year’s league attracted 13 representative teams from 13 prefecture-level cities in the province, including Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou. The matches were held in different host cities under the “one city, one home stadium” mechanism, with a total of 85 games throughout the 7-month season. The regular season concluded on September 27th, and the final—scheduled on November 2nd—determined the champion of this year’s league.
Unlike previous arrangements, this year’s league adjusted rules to ensure player health and competition fairness amid summer heat. Starting from the 6th round, each team was allowed to substitute up to 7 players per match (with a maximum of 3 substitution sessions during the game and an extra session at halftime), and substituted players could not re-enter the field. In addition, the league partnered with Jiangsu TV and over 10 online platforms (including the official app of the title sponsor Jiangsu Bank) to broadcast most matches live. It also adopted a low-ticket-price strategy (10 yuan per ticket) and free online viewing, allowing more football fans to enjoy the games.
The opening match was between Zhenjiang Team (home) and Yangzhou Team. It was a tense and exciting game with back-and-forth attacks. Zhenjiang Team took the lead in the 35th minute with a wonderful long-range shot from their midfielder Chen Yu. However, Yangzhou Team did not give up; their forward Wang Hao equalized in the 72nd minute with a header assisted by a teammate. In the end, the two teams drew 1-1, ending the first game of the season with a fair result.
Many football fans showed up at the stadium to cheer for their city teams. “I’m a die-hard fan of Zhenjiang Team. I arrived at the stadium 2 hours early just to get a good seat. The atmosphere here is amazing—this is the charm of city football!” said Li Tao, a 32-year-old local fan from Zhenjiang. Another fan, Zhou Jia from Suzhou, who drove to Zhenjiang to watch the opening match, said, “The league gives each city a chance to show its football spirit. I hope more young people will be inspired to play football and love this sport.”
The organizers of the league stated that the purpose of holding this event is to implement the important instructions on sports and football work, promote the integration of “sports+city”, and arouse the sense of regional identity among citizens. “We hope that through the Jiangsu Urban Football Super League, we can not only spread football culture and improve the level of local football, but also make football a new carrier for spreading city culture and uniting public consensus,” they said.

Surfing is a kind of water sport. Surfers use a surfboard to catch and ride the breaking waves.
Surfing started in the Polynesian (波利尼西亚) islands of the Pacific Ocean as well as West Africa and Peru. When Polynesians first went and lived in Hawaii (夏威夷) more than 800 years ago, they brought their love of surfing with them. Surfing was more than a sport to the early Hawaiians. It was an important part of their culture.
Hawaiians carved (雕刻) surfboards from the wood of special trees. The first boards were about 3 to 7 meters long and weighed more than 50 kilos. After World War II, plastic foam (塑料泡沫) boards appeared and the shape improved. Today’s surfboard is about 1.5 to 2.7 meters long and 11 to 26 kilos. Surfboards come in many different kinds, including shortboards, longboards, and fun boards.
Surfing was brought to the Western world in the early 20th century. In recent years, surfing has become popular among Chinese young sport lovers. China set up its national surfing team in 2018. In March 2024, a 15-year-old girl called Yang Siqi, from Sichuan Province, became China’s first Olympic surfer.
Surfing is not only about riding waves but about connecting with the ocean and having fun. It’s a sport that needs physical strength, balance (平衡感) and a love for the water. So, if you ever get the chance, give it a try!
