On September 3, a great ceremony was held in Beijing to celebrate the 80th anniversary (周年纪念) of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. At the end of the event, 80,000 colorful balloons flew into the sky, creating a beautiful rainbow.
Ou Xianghong, a 36-year-old from Changde, Hunan Province, served as a technical instructor (指导) for the balloon show. Ou runs a balloon decoration (装饰) shop and often works on decoration projects for different kinds of events. In May, after a strict selection process, she was chosen as one of 55 technical instructors for the event.
All the balloons were environmentally friendly and filled with helium (氦气). “Each balloon had to be exactly the same size, or the show would be perfect,” Ou said. The helium-filled balloons can stay in good condition for up to eight hours. So, hundreds of student volunteers needed to start inflating (充气) the balloons at 4:00 a.m. on September 3, and they had only an hour and a half to finish the task.
Ou traveled to Beijing several times to give training to the student volunteers. With her help, the volunteers improved quickly — from taking over 10 seconds to fill one balloon to finishing two or more in 10 seconds. Because of this, the task was completed in 70 minutes, 20 minutes faster than the planned 90 minutes.
With balloons flying in the sky and the song Ode to the Motherland playing across the square, Ou was deeply moved, and tears came to her eyes. She felt proud to have played a part in the big celebration. It will be one of the most special memories of her life.
( )23. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A. To explain the use of balloons.
B. To introduce the event and its background.
C. To describe the weather conditions in Beijing.
( )24. What was Ou Xianghong’s main task in the event
A. Decorating all the balloons.
B. Training the student volunteers.
C. Offering the environmentally-friendly balloons.
( )25. How long did it take the student volunteers to finish inflating the balloons at last
A. 70 minutes.
B. 80 minutes.
C. 90 minutes.
( )26. What is the best title for the passage
A. The Science Behind Helium Balloons
B. The History of a National Celebration
C. A Woman’s Role in a Great Ceremony

When someone we love is upset, just saying “I understand why you feel that way” can be more helpful than we think.
A group of scientists at Ohio State University wanted to learn how words can affect (影响) our feelings. They asked over 300 college students to think about a time they were very angry — like fighting with a friend or getting mad at their parents. The students wrote about the moment on a piece of paper, then shared the story with a researcher.
Some researchers listened kindly and said things like, “That must have made you angry,” or “I hear you.” Others were less kind and said things like, “That doesn’t sound so bad,” or “Why would that make you so furious ”
All the students felt less happy when they remembered their angry moments. But something amazing happened. The students who felt understood quickly felt better. Their happy feelings came back. The students who were not understood, however, stayed upset or even felt worse.
The study showed that understanding others’ feelings isn’t just polite. It also protects their good feelings inside. When people feel seen and heard, they can stay hopeful and open to others, even when talking about something hard.
Jennifer Cheavens, one of the scientists, said that we often try to fix people’s sad or angry feelings. We forget to help them keep the good ones. “People can feel sad and hopeful at the same time,” she said. “Accepting their feelings helps both.”
This study reminds us how to be better friends, parents and family members. Just remember: when someone feels bad, just letting them know you understand how they feel can help their heart feel lighter.
( )27. What did the students do after writing about the moment of their bad experiences on a piece of paper
A. They sent it to their parents.
B. They discussed it in groups.
C. They shared it with a researcher.
( )28. The underlined word “furious” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “______”.
A. mad
B. relaxed
C. happy
( )29. Which of the following opinions might Jennifer Cheavens agree with
A. It’s impossible to feel sad and hopeful at the same time.
B. Keeping good feelings is as important as fixing the bad ones.
C. Writing about feelings is more useful than talking about them.
( )30. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Anger is difficult to control for most people.
B. People should avoid hiding their bad feelings.
C. Understanding others’ feelings can make them feel better.

49-year-old Xing Shaoyun is a nurse, caring for people with leprosy (麻风病). She has worked at a hospital in Hainan for nearly 30 years.
The first time Xing reached out to hold a leprosy patient’s hand, the woman pulled back and said, “Don’t touch me. I don’t want to make you sick.” That experience changed Xing’s life. She realized the patients’ greatest pain wasn’t the illness itself, but the fear and shame it brought.
In the past, these patients were cut off from society by their families. Many of them had lost their jobs, lost friends, and even the simple chance to be hugged because of their illness.
However, Xing believed the patients should be treated with kindness and respect. She did more than just treat their illness. She listened to their stories, held their hands, and comforted (安慰) them. “They don’t just need medicine,” Xing said. “They need to be seen and loved.”
Xing also led her team to find better treatments for leprosy. She even helped train hundreds of local caregivers and traveled to faraway villages to offer care to those in need.
Xing has received top national and international awards for her work. But she says the greatest honor is the trust of her patients. “Some elderly patients call me ‘daughter’,” she said. “That’s why I keep going — to bring light and warmth to every life I touch.”

Last winter, I saw an old man fall on my way to school. I ran over to help him stand up and asked if he was hurt. He said his leg was painful, so I called his family and waited with him. When his son arrived, he thanked me warmly.
