“Once there was a ship travelling on the tough sea and on the ship there was a couple. All of a sudden, the ship met with an accident and the couple had no choice but to run to the lifeboat without delay. After reaching there, they realized that there was space only for one person. At that very moment, the husband pushed his wife behind him and jumped onto the lifeboat himself, leaving his wife standing on the sinking ship and shouting something desperately to her husband with her eyes filled with tears.”
The teacher stopped her storytelling and asked her students, “Guys, guess what it was that she shouted.”
Most students answered, “I hate you!”
After listening to this reply, the teacher glanced through the whole class again and noticed that there was a boy sitting silently throughout. Then she asked him the same question.
The boy answered, “I believe she would have shouted—take care of our child.”
Listening to his remark, the teacher was surprised and asked the boy doubtfully, “Have you heard of this story before?”
Shaking his head, the boy said softly and sadly, “No, I haven't. But that's what my mother said to my father before she died of a deadly disease.”
Moved and feeling sad, the teacher replied, “Your answer is absolutely right!”
Then she continued, “Let's take up the story. The ship sank eventually and the husband went home and brought up their daughter alone. Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter was tidying up all his belongings when she found his diary. In his diary she found that when her parents were on the ship, her mother had already been diagnosed (诊断) with advanced cancer and at the critical moment, the father rushed to the only chance of survival.”

In his diary, the man mentioned he wished to sink to the ocean with his wife but for their daughter he had to live. Without him, their little daughter would have become an orphan. He pulled through the painful days and learned how to raise their daughter. Whenever he encountered difficulties, he motivated himself with his wife's words—“take care of our child”. Years later, their daughter grew up and he knew that he had kept his promise successfully. If his wife had been alive, she would have been happy to see this.
The story ended and the class was silent. Nobody talked or laughed as usual. Instead, it seemed that every student was lost in deep thought. They were touched by this special story, reflecting on their responses. Those who had misunderstood the man in this story bowed their heads in shame. They finally knew that sometimes what they saw were not facts. They should not judge the man without understanding the whole story.

September is most beautiful in Strathroy, where people wholeheartedly enjoy the simple pleasures of life and nature.
Roland was no exception. He was a wonderful German Shepherd (德国牧羊犬), a little lazy and overweight, though. He loved to doze (打盹) in the backyard. He yawned and stretched his body as he heard the slowly approaching footsteps of Mrs Proudfoot. “Come and have your lunch, dear!” said Mrs Proudfoot with her usual fondness for him and he wagged his tail lovingly in return.
Roland was licking the last piece of meat in his plate when the doorbell burst into music. Mrs Proudfoot hurried to answer the door. Roland stood alertly by her side.
“Good noon Mrs Proudfoot.” It was Sam, her teenage neighbor. “My! My! You look pale! What happened?” asked Mrs Proudfoot with genuine worry. She immediately waved him in and closed the door behind. Mrs Proudfoot was a lonely widow, but was well loved in her neighborhood especially by kids, though she had no kids to call her own.
Once encouraged, Sam disclosed his dilemma. “My friend Barry lost a rare book of school library. It costs 150 dollars, but he has only 55 dollars and his poor parents can't afford to pay the rest. Barry is working part time but that's far from enough.” With a dramatic sigh he continued, “If he didn't refund the loss before the end of term, he will be dismissed from final exams. That will ruin his future! I have to help him, whatever it takes. He is my best friend.”
“Don't worry, Sam. You want me to pay ...” but Mrs Proudfoot was interrupted. “No, No, Mrs Proudfoot. This is not what I came here for. I'll work for you. Would you favor me to walk your dog please For 2 dollars a day.” He looked up with begging eyes.
Mrs Proudfoot clapped her hands in agreement, “That can't be better! I've been worried about Roland lately. He does need some exercise! It's nice of you to make such an offer.”
Sam thanked her over and over, “I will start tomorrow morning.”
