Li Jia is a 16-year-old student from Nanjing No. 3 Middle School. She has a strong passion for environmental protection. Since she was in primary school, she has been participating in various environmental protection activities.
Last year, Li Jia organized a group of students to clean up the garbage in the local park. They spent three weekends collecting garbage and sorting it. After that, they gave a speech in the school to encourage more students to protect the environment. Many students were moved by their actions and joined the environmental protection group.
This year, Li Jia and her group started a project called “Save Water, Save Our Earth”. They visited different communities to promote water-saving knowledge. They taught people how to save water in daily life, such as turning off the tap when brushing teeth and reusing water to water plants. They also put up posters and distributed leaflets to raise people’s awareness of water conservation.
Li Jia said that she was inspired by her grandmother, who has been advocating environmental protection all her life. “My grandmother told me that the environment is our home. We must protect it for ourselves and for future generations,” she said.
In addition to organizing activities, Li Jia also writes articles about environmental protection for the school newspaper. She hopes that through her words, more people will realize the importance of environmental protection and take action.
Li Jia’s efforts have been recognized by the school and the community. She was awarded the title of “Environmental Protection Star” last month. “I will continue to do my best to protect the environment. I believe that as long as everyone contributes a little, we can make the world a better place,” she said.

In cold weather, we often miss the warmth of summer. It would be great if we could store (储存) the summer heat for the cold winter months. Believe it or not, a new technology has made this idea possible-by using a lot of sand. Have you ever been to a beach on a hot day If so, then you can feel that the sand is burning your feet. In fact, sand can be heated to very high temperatures. It is also very good at storing that heat. For this reason, some Finnish engineers have created a seven-meter-tall sand battery. This large battery tower is filled with about 100 tons of sand. The engineers used some solar panels (太阳能电池板) to produce electricity. The sand can be heated by the electricity to about 500 degrees Celsius (摄氏度) and stay hot for several months. Therefore, the energy stored in summer can be used in winter. The heat can be used to warm homes, offices and even local swimming pools.
This green energy technology is still being tested in Finland. The engineers want to spread it to the world as soon as possible. They hope this technology can help reduce the use of fossil fuels (化石燃料).
Storing summer heat with 6 Inspiration The sand stores much heat which may hurt your feet.
7 Some Finnish engineers
Appearance It is seven meters tall.
Purpose To help cut down the environmental 8
The way it works 1. Use solar panels to produce electricity which can heat the sand in the large battery tower
2. Not only can sand be heated to very high temperature, 9 it is good at storing heat.
3. The heat can be used to 10 for homes, offices and even local swimming pools.

It’s very important for us to learn about protecting the environment around us. Here is a 4R rule for us:
▲Recycle. Bottles, waste paper, glass, plastic and so on can easily be recycled. By doing so, we can save lots of time and money. For example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat (压平) and melted (熔化), and the melted things are made for new coke cans.
▲Reduce. Millions of trees are being cut down to make paper. If everyone uses a little paper carelessly and throws it out, soon we would not have any trees left. We should use both sides of paper. Reduce the use of boxes and cups which can be used only once. Other things are also being wasted and people don’t know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary for us to reduce the waste.
▲Reuse. We should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them out. Give our clothes we do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor. Within a family, we may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.
▲Repair. If one of the legs of our table is broken, we can repair it instead of throwing it away. If we want to change for better ones, it is better for us to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after doing some repairing.
In a word, the more we do, the better our environment will be.

Our School English Newsletter: “My Little World”. Share your stories about the things that matter to you.
From: Leo Last weekend, I joined a community clean-up activity at the city park with my classmates. We spent the whole morning picking up plastic bottles, food packaging, and other litter that visitors had left behind. At first, I thought it would be boring and tiring, but as we worked, I saw the park becoming cleaner and more beautiful. An old man who was walking in the park stopped to thank us. He said, “This park is like our shared living room -we should all help keep it clean.” His words made me realize that everyone should be responsible for protecting the environment. I felt really proud of what we did together.
From: Ms. Chen (History Teacher) I’m so proud of our students! Yesterday, I took the history club to visit an ancient temple in our city that was built 800 years ago. Unlike the tourists who only take photos, our students brought soft cloths and small brushes to carefully clean the dust from the beautiful stone carvings. They also spent time talking with the temple keepers, learning about the history and discussing ways to better protect this place. “These carvings tell the stories of our ancestors,” one student said. “We should make sure they remain for our children and grandchildren to see and learn from. Now, we know this is very important.”
From: Zhang Wei This weekend, my grandfather taught me how to make traditional Chinese knots (结). He showed me different patterns that are symbols of good luck, happiness, and long life. “This skill has been passed down in our family for five generations (代),” he told me while his skilled fingers worked with the red thread (线). Though I can buy machine-made knots in stores that look more perfect, grandfather says handmade ones carry our family’s warmth and blessings. I’ve decided to learn this skill well and plan to teach it to other children in our community center next month. It’s my duty to keep this beautiful tradition alive.
16.Did Leo feel proud after the clean-up activity
17.What did the students use to clean the stone carvings
18.What do the three experiences have in common about protecting things around us

There are many different kinds of pollution in our world. It is common to hear about pollution in the air and water, but have you ever heard of light pollution
Light pollution is a man-made problem, and it has increased by 50% in the last 20 years. The bright lights in big cities make people’s life safer and easier. However, they have affected the health of people and animals around the world at the same time.
Everyone has their own natural sleep-wake cycles. For many people, darkness is important to tell the body that it is time to relax and go to sleep. When there is too much light in the environment, the body produces less melatonin (褪黑激素), which makes sleeping difficult. Being in a bright environment at night can also increase worry and pressure.
Our bright lights are harmful to many animals, too. Take birds for example. Birds use the light of the moon to migrate (迁徙), but with so much man-made light in the environment, they often get lost.
Many countries and groups have taken action against light pollution. In Canada, bird-friendly laws on lighting have been passed, and many big cities turn off their lights during migration seasons. The International Dark-Sky Association was set up in the USA in 1988. The group works with communities around the world to save and enjoy the darkness of night.
There are some things that you can do for light pollution. For example, stop using your electronic devices (设备) one or two hours before you go to sleep. Also, turn off lights that you are not using, especially those outside.

There are also desertified (荒漠化的) land and soil pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai province.
The Yangtze River Protection Law includes bans (禁止) on activity that could damage the river. It also includes heavier punishments for those who don’t follow the law.
(C) According to the law, fishing will be banned in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways. Those who are caught fishing will be fined 50, 000 to 500, 000 yuan. Sand mining (采沙) will be strictly limited in the river valley. Many companies are mining sand along the river, as sand is a rare resource. Wood vaulting (储存) is a new and simple idea to help slow down climate (气候) change. It means collecting dead trees and wood pieces, and burying them in the ground. This stops the wood from releasing (释放) carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air. Scientists say this method could take away up to 12 billion tons of CO2 every year, which would help the Earth stay cooler.
The idea comes from how wood can last a long time in nature. For example, researchers found a 3,775-year-old cedar log (雪松) in Canada. Even after thousands of years underground, the log still kept almost all its carbon. This shows that if wood is buried in soil with little air, it won’t release carbon out even after thousands of years.
Some companies, like Carbon Lockdown, are already trying wood vaulting. They bury trees killed by fire in deep holes and make sure little air can reach them. They also check the buried wood to make sure it does not produce harmful gases like CH4. This keeps the carbon safely stored.
Wood vaulting is the solution to climate change as well as a useful one. It can work together with other ways, like using less non-renewable energy and protecting forests. By doing this, wood vaulting can help lower the amount of CO2 in the air and slow down global warming.

Some trains produce thick clouds of black smoke as they travel. They smell bad and are harmful to the environment. But luckily, they will soon be a thing of the past.
In recent years, scientists have been experimenting with biodiesel (生物柴油). Biodiesel can be made from vegetable oils and animal fats. It can also be made from cooking oil waste and leftover food. Biodiesel can power diesel engines. It is better for the environment than regular diesel.
Amaterasu Railway is an open-air sightseeing train (敞篷观光列车) in Miyazaki Prefecture (宫崎县) in Japan. It has been powered by biodiesel since 2021. The train itself is very lovely. It is pink and white. While the train is moving, its conductors use bubble machines to create bubbles along the way.
The train can carry up to 60 people. Its ride time is about 30 minutes. It travels through mountains, tunnels and rice fields. Its fuel is powerful enough to pull the train up high mountains.
The train’s biodiesel costs about the same as regular diesel. Cooking oil provides about ninety percent of the train’s fuel. The other ten percent comes from pork bone noodle soup, and this makes the smoke from the train smell yummy.
The railway company works with another company to run the train. They buy the used cooking oil and leftover noodle soup from some restaurants. The fat from the soup and the oil are refined into biodiesel. Unlike regular diesel, biodiesel goes bad in a few months. So, it has to be used right away.
The biodiesel train reuses food waste and cuts down on harmful smoke. How useful it is!

In hot summers, we often buy bottled water, drink it all up, and then throw away the bottles. It’s said that more than 1 million water bottles are sold every minute around the world. Sales of bottled water are expected to double (翻倍) by 2030. However, using and throwing away so many bottles can cause big problems for society and the environment.
The social problems
In some rich countries, clean running water is everywhere. But people think bottled water is healthier and more delicious. That’s the opinion driven by bottled water companies. In poor countries, people choose bottled water more often because they don’t have ways to drink safe tap water (自来水). So this can draw people’s attention away from the real problems of public water systems (系统).
The environmental problems
Most plastics are not recycled and end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场). It can take up to 1,000 years for these bottles to break down in nature. And they can get into the ocean and bring harm to sea animals. The main source of bottled water is groundwater. However, groundwater is rapidly getting less in some areas because of excessive extraction (过度开采) and climate change. And the bottled water industry may make the lower water supply even worse.
Here are some tips for you. You should try to save water and use reusable bottles instead of throwing away plastic bottles after drinking them.

Kristen Tapping, a student from London South Bank University, has invented a bike wheel that can help clean pollution in the air. It’s called Rolloe.
The wheel uses fins (尾翼) to pull in air as it turns. It then uses filters (过滤器) to take in polluted air and give off clean air back into the environment. The wheel can filter more air if it goes faster, although it still works at low speeds (速度).
Tapping said users would need to change the filter every week or after about 250 kilometers, to make sure the wheel continues to work well. The wheel fits in the front of a standard (标准的) bike and weighs about one kilogram.
Tapping said she was encouraged to create the wheel when she was biking around London. “In traffic, you always notice the pollution, the heat, the gases and the smell,” she said. She predicts that if 10 percent of the riders in London had a Rolloe on their bike, they could filter about 266,865 m of air a day, although this has yet to be tested.
A recent report shows that London’s health costs because of air pollution are the highest among all the European cities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also said that outdoor air pollution causes about 4.2 million deaths around the world each year.
Tapping wants to use the wheel on shared bike projects at first, with the aim of making the wheels available for all bikes to use. She says she would also like to create a wheel that would fit in the back of a bike, as well as making them available in different sizes.

On November 13, 2023, people across Kenya took part in their first national tree-planting holiday. The holiday was created to encourage people to plant trees.
Kenya is famous for its beautiful forests and wildlife. But large areas of Kenya’s forests have been cut down, either for the wood or for farming. Kenya has less and less land covered by forests. The government has a goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 to cover 30% of its land with trees.
In early November, the government announced National Tree Growing Day would fall on November 13. To prepare for the day, the government got 150 million young trees ready for planting. The government also created a special app to help organize the tree planting. The app helps people collect young trees, find places to plant, and record their efforts. It also helps the government find out how many trees have been planted in different areas around the country.
On that day, people all over Kenya turned out in large numbers to take part in the holiday. In the capital, Nairobi, hundreds of people joined in, even though it was raining. Government leaders led planting efforts in different parts of the country. Workers, students, families and other groups showed up to take part.
Elizabeth Wathuti, who works to protect the environment, was very happy about the support Kenyans showed for tree planting. But she suggested that people should take care of the trees as they grow. “Tree planting is just the beginning,” she said.

Our school forum (网络论坛) is starting a discussion on “Humans and Nature”. How should we get along with nature Should we protect nature completely or believe technology can help us better Here are some students’ opinions on it.
Lin Tao (13, Grade 7)—Be Nature’s Guardians (守护者) 8:35 p.m. 19 Sep. Nature isn’t just there for us to use—it has its own value (价值). We should protect forests, oceans, and animals for our future. We can build more nature reserves (保护区) and cut down pollution. It’s also important to learn to enjoy nature and live peacefully with it, not just take from it. Small actions like saving water can help a lot if everyone does them.
Wang Mei (14, Grade 8)—Technology Helps the Environment 8:45 p.m. 19 Sep. We can’t give up modern life and go back to a simple one. Instead, we should use technology to fix environmental problems. For example, we can develop clean energy like solar (太阳能的) power to take the place of coal and oil. Technology caused some of these problems, but it can also solve them. Humans can’t live without good natural environment, so we need smart ideas and new inventions.
Zhang Jian (15, Grade 9)—Balance Protection and Progress 10 minutes ago We need natural resources (资源) to develop, and we have to use them in a proper way. For example, we can cut down trees, but we should also plant new ones. We can build cities, but we need to leave green space for animals. It’s not about choosing between protection and development—it’s about finding a wise middle way.
73.Does Lin Tao think small actions can help to protect nature
74.According to Zhang Jian, what should we do after cutting down trees

Shi Guangyin is one of the winners of the July 1 Medal (“七一”勋章). He’s from a county (县) which lies on the side of the Maowusu Desert. In the past, many local people had to leave the county to keep away from the terrible sandstorms.
In the 1970s, when the government called on people to green the desert, Shi decided to plant trees to fight sandstorms. To buy young trees, he sold almost all his things. He also encouraged villagers to go into Maowusu for a greener future.
However, it was not an easy thing. Nearly 90% of the trees they planted died at first. The villagers were sad and lost heart. But Shi said he would never give up.
In the following years, Shi asked for suggestions from many experts and tried new ways to take care of the young trees. Finally, his hard work paid off. More than 80% of trees grew well in the harsh (恶劣的) environment. The yellow desert gradually turned into green forests. They’ve finally built a “Green Great Wall” of more than 50 km in the desert. People always kindly call Shi “Uncle in the Desert”. Now, the forest coverage in the county has risen from 3.8% in 1980 to 33.5% today.
“We plan to improve forest quality in the next five years,” Shi said. “By following scientific plans, we will see a more beautiful and greener countryside.”

In many countries, people are encouraged to buy electric cars. It is said that driving an electric car is good for the environment. But is that true The University of Minnesota recently studied emissions (排放物) from different cars. Scientists found that sometimes, electric cars are more harmful than petrol (汽油) cars.
Surprising Well, please pay attention to the word “sometimes”. Electric cars should be clean. But the problem lies in the power that is used to charge (充电) them. If the power comes from wind or solar energy (太阳能), electric cars will cause little pollution. However, if the power is produced from coal (煤), they will be very harmful. According to the study, emissions from these cars kill about 3,000 people a year. However, pollution caused by petrol cars only leads to 880 deaths a year.
In fact, salespeople are not lying when they say electric cars are clean. However, they are right only when the power used to charge their cars is also clean.
So how clean electric cars are depends on what their electricity comes from. In France, more than half of the power comes from nuclear (核) power stations. Electric cars there should be as clean as they are marketed to be. In many developing countries, however, electricity mainly comes from coal. India, for example, depends on coal for 61% of its power. Only 2% of electricity comes from nuclear energy. In countries like India, electric cars are not clean at all.

Throwing away unwanted food has become a big problem in the developed world. While some of us throw away unwanted food, people in other parts of the world are short of food and are starving. It’s a shocking fact that a third of the world’s food is wasted each year. That is about 1.3 billion (十亿) tons of food. It is enough to feed a billion (A) hungry people.
You may think supermarkets are the main ones to waste food. After all, they do throw things that have passed their sell-by-date. They also encourage people to buy more than they need through promotions (促销) such as (B) “buy one get one free”. But we are the biggest ones for creating food waste. In Europe, 53% of food waste comes from households, which results in 88 million tons of food waste a year. Unluckily this leads to global warming and Climate (气候) change.
In Denmark, a woman called Selina Jul has been working hard to solve this problem. She encouraged people to buy only what they needed. She wrote a cookbook to teach people to cook the left food. And she’s now set up an education programme in schools. This has helped to make food waste less. It shows that something can be done. Clearly, we need to think twice when we put something in our shopping bag, and when we’re at home, we should make the most of the food we have—using cookbooks to use up our left food materials or even sharing our food with our friends and neighbors.

“One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” That’s a common expression, but the next time you throw something away, think about a twist on the old saying. What if your trash could become your own treasure Many creative and environmentally-minded people have come up with a way to make that happen. It’s called upcycling. Our world would be a better place if everyone would begin upcycling.
Upcycling is the practice of taking an unwanted item and turning it into something useful. For example, how about that pair of jeans with a hole in one knee It could become a new pillow (枕头) for your bedroom. How about the old T-shirts you never wear anymore It could be sewed together to make a picnic blanket (毯子) . All of these are examples of upcycling.
Upcycling is not the same as recycling. Upcycling is actually much better for the environment. Recycling takes an item made of glass, paper, metal, or plastic, breaks it down to its base material, and then uses that material to make another product. This requires a great deal of energy. On the other hand, when you choose to upcycle, the only energy you use is your own. And upcycling not only reduces the amount of trash that goes into our landfills, but it also protects natural resources, such as oil and gas. Recycling is good for the environment, but upcycling is even better.
Upcycling also makes a family’s budget stretch further. Before you run to the store to buy something, look around your house. Old teacups can be transformed into candles. And an old ladder (梯子) can even become a bookshelf. Of course, the idea of reusing items to save money is not new. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, many families lived on a tight budget. People had to use what they already had in order to meet their needs. Flour sacks (面粉袋) were used to make clothes, and a broken door became a new table. Today we should follow the examples of our great-grandparents and save money by upcycling.
As responsible citizens, we should all be concerned with protecting our environment and budgeting our resources. Upcycling is a fun and creative way to help. The next time you go to throw something into the trash can, stop and think about what it could become. Chances are, there’s a brand-new item in your hand just waiting to be upcycled.
91.What is upcycling according to the passage
92.According to Paragraph 3, why is upcycling much better for the environment than recycling
93.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean
94.The Spring Festival is coming. Figure out one thing to upcycle. Explain what you will do with it and how it will help with the celebration of the festival.

Recently, a father called Daming and his son Dongshun’s photos became hot all over China. In the photos, while they are working on the boat on Dongting Lake, lots of fish are jumping into the fish bin (鱼舱).
Dongting Lake is the second largest freshwater lake in China. It’s home to nearly 400 kinds of fishes. But in the past, people threw litter and factories put wastewater into the lake. Even worse, a large number of fish were caught by fishermen. Because of pollution and overfishing, the Yangtze River was in great danger. For example, the Chinese paddlefish (中华白鲟) disappeared 2 years ago. Daming used to make a living by fishing near Dongting Lake. However, life was gradually becoming difficult for Daming and other fishermen. The more times they went to fish, the fewer fish they could get.
In January, 2020, the government called for a 10-year fishing ban (禁渔令), covering 332 conservation areas (保护区) in the Yangtze River. Dongshun has worked with his father as a lake ranger (巡湖员) for almost 3 years. This job helps him understand how important it is to protect Dongting Lake. “I think this job is meaningful,” he said, “as the wind is blowing gently, fish are swimming happily.
