On Tuesday, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Denny’s CEO Kelli Valade got together at the restaurant in Silicon Valley, California to put up a plaque (纪念匾) on the wall beside the table where Huang and NVIDIA co-founders Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem cooked up their idea for a GPU that would play a key role in most large language models. The plaque carries the words “The Restaurant That Launched A $1 Trillion Company”.
Together with it, Valade also announced a Trillion-Dollar Incubator Contest to celebrate the occasion, offering $25,000 in seed money “for the next $1 trillion idea”. The contest is open to anyone with a creative and innovative idea that could impact the world. The only catch The idea must originate — like NVIDIA — at one of Valade’s diners.
“Your story is so inspiring that it will continue to inspire people at Denny’s,” Valade said, as she presented the plaque to Huang.
“Denny’s is a good place to start a career,” Huang said. “It has taught me so many lessons. It has taught me hard work. It has taught me not to give up.”
Both Huang and Valade got their start working at diners. Valade got her first job as a waitress at a diner when she was 16. Huang got his first job at Denny’s in Portland, Oregon when he was 15.

William Osler, a doctor, once said, “The person who takes medicine must recover twice, once from the disease and once from the medicine.” It tells us medicine may have some side effects. Therefore, many people in the west are turning to other treatments to replace some medicine and to avoid its side effects. Acupuncture which is popular among them is one of these treatments.
What is acupuncture It is based on the idea that energy flows through the human body along 12 lines or meridians (经络). These meridians end up at organs in the body, and illness is the result of blockage (堵塞) of the energy flow to these organs. To remove the block age, an acupuncturist inserts very fine needles into the body at points along the meridians. This stimulates the flow of energy, and restores the patient’s health, thus making the people re-cover from many kinds of diseases.
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese treatment, which has been practiced for around 3,000 years. It is used to treat a wide range of diseases, such as headaches, dental pain, back pain, high blood pressure, stress, depression, and anxiety. It also gains great popularity among Chinese people due to its effectiveness.
Since acupuncture is known to be effective against pain, it is not surprising that many people in foreign countries have experimented with it. Martina Hingis, who was a famous tennis player, had a wrist injury cured through acupuncture. NBA legend Kobe Bryant also used it on his leg. It has been used widely in the German football league to help the football players, including the national team. Believe it or not, the Queen of England was also interested in it.
If you do decide to visit an acupuncturist, it is important that you should check they are qualified and registered to practice, for some people are allergic to it while they are being treated, although this is very uncommon.
35. What can we learn according to the passage
A. Medicine has little side effects.
B. Acupuncture was originally used in the west.
C. Acupuncture can treat physical as well as mental diseases.
D. The person who takes medicine recovers twice from the disease.
36. How does paragraph 4 develop
A. By making a comparison. B. By giving a definition.
C. By taking examples. D. By listing numbers.
37. What is the author’s attitude towards acupuncture
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.
38. Which is the best title of this passage
A. The Function of Acupuncture B. The History of Acupuncture
C. Acupuncture — Be Careful D. Acupuncture — an Effective Treatment

A good story, that’s what influences our choice to buy a book the most. Right Some of the biggest-selling novels of all time just so happened to be attached to major publishers. Indeed, any reading lover will be familiar with the countless publishing houses that have brought brilliant works to the market. So in theory, perhaps a publisher does matter.
Every time you read a book that you enjoy, you likely look at the publisher attached to it. That name is a signal that they will produce other content that fits with that same style. It makes a lot of sense to continue to purchase texts from a company that is telling the kinds of stories that you enjoy the most. Consumer habits are thus based on trust that a publisher will be consistent in the books they deliver and that investing time in them is more reliable than an untested source.
The strength of the author themselves can also play into that. After all, well-liked authors are often signed to a book deal with a select few publishers, strengthening the brand further.
Of course, a publisher would be nothing without its logo, which is a major call-to-arms for all fans of the brand. The top publishers in the world instantly recognizable imagery, which catch the attention while summing up the name of a brand in an instant. That thus builds our association with a given name. The fun penguin shape of Penguin Random House is so iconic, for example, that it could not be confused with any other publishing business.
There might be a place for those indie (独立经营的) book companies, with occasional stories breaking through and forcing people to take notice. In truth that’s far less common than you expect. Expert Cassandra Davis, however, provides a hopeful insight. “Indie bookshops are more likely to stock an indie publisher’s books, especially if the author is local to the bookshop.” She says. Therefore, supporting local bookshops is a vital way to keep the indie industry alive and change these trends.
39. Which of the following is not a strategy for a publisher to promote its brand
A. Offering discounts to repeat customers. B. Contracting with renowned writers.
C. Maintaining consistent publishing style. D. Designing a distinctive trademark.
40 What is the author’s attitude towards indie publishers
A. Optimistic. B. Cautious. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.
41. What does the underlined words “these trends” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Depression of local bookshops. B. Lack of attention to excellent books.
C. Dominance of major publishers. D. Stability of consumers’ preferences.
42. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Should We Judge a Book by Its Publisher
B. Do Publishers Influence Our Reading Choices
C. Why Do We Choose the Same Publisher Continuously
D. What Advantages Do Major Publishers Have Over Indie Ones

阅读下面短文并根据题目要求用英语回答问题(第1—3题答案不超过5词,第4题答案不超过20词)。
In the past few years, online learning has become a significant part of the university and college experience. A survey found that 29 percent of college students registered for online courses. But are all online courses created equal How can you be sure that digital learning is right for you If you take an online course, what can you do to ensure the best possible grade We interviewed students and professors to get their advice about online courses.
The most obvious advantage of online learning is that you can study anywhere and anytime. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t deadlines. “I think a point that many people lose sight of is how easy it can be to fall behind schedule,” says graduate student Amanda Bindman. Before choosing to study online, consider whether you’re a self-motivated learner and if the material seems interesting enough to keep you going.
The tip that comes up most often is simple: build online courses into your weekly schedule, just like what you would do with in-person courses. Professor Alex Davidson teaches the same course in person and online. He noted that his online students usually end up with lower grades. It is so easy to let an online course slide, but your grades will suffer as a result. Be sure to schedule set times to watch your lectures, read materials and contribute to online discussion boards.
The chief complaint about online courses is that they lack human interaction. A social connection is often a big part of learning. There are things you can do to ease this problem. Jessica Pink, an undergraduate student, suggests taking online courses with a friend, so you can motivate each other to stay on track. You can also find students on the class discussion board to organize a study group, or schedule in-person meetings with your professor to discuss course concepts.
47. How do they solve the problem whether the online courses are suitable or not
________________________________________________________________
48. What are the disadvantages of online learning
________________________________________________________________
49. What important quality should you have if you want to be an online learner according to Bindman

50. It’s hard to persist in online learning. Are there any solutions to this issue in this passage

四.写作
第一节 概要写作(共1题,满分10分)
51. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60字左右的内容概要。
It is halfway through October. The sun arrives early and I stare out my window, feeling shame for invading the privacy of the homeless woman who has settled across the street. I am not sure when she first appeared, maybe a month ago. Each morning, I watch as she gets out from the narrow space between the two large buildings across from mine.
She wears the same dirty, badly torn dress every day. I can see she fights to pull herself up into a standing position. She fails on the first two or three tries, but determination always wins out. She remains leaning against the wall for several long minutes, appearing to gather the necessary strength needed to pick up her possessions — all packed into five plastic bags. With tears in my eyes, I watch as she places her feet pointing outward to avoid falling. Her steps are measured and cautious as she slowly makes her way to the corner and disappears.
When I first noticed this woman, I went across the street and offered her 20 dollars, but she turned her back to me and pretended not to see me. The expression on her face was one of shame, causing me to feel guilty for invading her privacy. The next night I bought a hot dog and a Coke, and left them in the spot when she was not there. Feeling like a spy, I watched as she ate the hot dog like a starving cat that had not eaten for days. I too often find myself complaining about life, but when I look out my window and see the old woman, I feel the need to apologize for my foolish pride in not realizing how fortunate I really am.
There are many poor people in my town. I have become familiar with many of their faces, and then suddenly they disappear. I know that one day the old woman will be gone, and I will have no idea where she is. I fear that day.

48. What are the disadvantages of online learning
