Imagine this: You had a late soccer game, and you' re hungry. Your mom agrees to stop by a pizza shop on the way home. It's closing soon, but all of your favorite slices are still available. Phew! This is great news for you. But according to Chris MacAulay, it's bad news for the environment.
When we go to a pizza shop at closing time expecting a full selection, or when we pick only the best apples at a grocery store,“we' re creating our own problem,” MacAulay, the vice president of operations in North America for Too Good To Go whose aim is to limit food waste, told TIME for Kids.
Too Good To Go wants extra food to land somewhere other than in the trash. The idea started inDenmark about a decade ago. Now Too Good To Go is the world's largest market- place for extra food.
The company connects people and businesses through an app. Users can search a map to find participating restaurants and grocery stores in their area. For a low price, businesses offer surprise bags
or boxes of extra food. These can contain anything from pizza slices to baked goods. Users claim and pay for a bag or box, and then pick it up before the business closes for the day.
The app has more than 100 million users worldwide.“The more success we have at helping customers pick up a surprise bag, the more we' ve achieved our vision of ending food waste,”MacAulay says.
How can kids help reduce food waste “Get interested in food and where food comes from,”MacAulay suggests.“Participate in understanding how food ends up on the plate.” This can mean going on family grocery outings or being more thoughtful about portions(份量).“Once you start to see the amount of waste, it's really hard to unsee,”MacAulay says.
24. Why is the great news for you considered“bad news” for the environment
A. It reveals poor food service. B. It shows potential food waste.
C. It suggests uncertain food safety. D. It reflects weak food demand.
25. How does Too Good To Go work to reduce food waste
A. By selling food in surprise boxes.
B. By recycling restaurant's wasted food.
C. By producing less food in the first place.
D. By offering customers extra food information.
26. What is MacAulay's advice for kids
A. To go on family outings.
B. To support Too Good To Go.
C. To learn about food's journey.
D. To embrace a zero- waste lifestyle.
27. What can we learn from Too Good To Go
A. Better later than never. B. Prevention is better than cure.
C.Trash can become treasure. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Forests, grasslands and other ecosystems take up CO from the atmosphere as they grow. When they decompose(分解) or burn, this carbon is returned to the atmosphere. The uptake and release should generally be in balance. But over the past half century, these ecosystems have tended to take up more CO than they have released, creating a carbon sink that varies in strength from year to year.
This imbalance is thought to be due mainly to increased concentrations of CO in the atmosphere fertilizing plants, plus other factors like reforestation. But it isn't expected to last forever because the climate consequences of rising CO are catching up with the fertilization effect.
In 2023, researchers were concerned when the land carbon sink nearly disappeared due to extreme wildfires, heat and drought. In 2024, the sink was expected to strengthen as there were fewer wildfires. But an international research team found that the sink was extremely weak again.
The researchers used satellite data on the greenness of the land's surface to calculate the productivity of the planet's ecosystems, and therefore the amount of CO they took up. They took away from this the amount of CO released in wildfires and by decomposition. They found the land carbon sink in 2024 nearly disappeared.
Unlike in 2023, however, the researchers found this weakening wasn't mainly driven by fires and dry weather. Instead, their analysis found hot and wet conditions sped up the rate at which organic matter was decomposing. Ecosystems also saw an increase in productivity—— greenness reached record highs—— but this was outpaced by the total amount of CO released.
The disappearance of the sink for the second-year running could be a sign that it is declining earlier than expected. However, Scott Denning at Colorado State University says it could be that the past two years were a blip.“You need to be cautious interpreting even two years of growth as a persistent collapse,” he says.
28. How is a carbon sink formed
A. Increased CO intensifies greenhouse effect.
B. Ecosystems absorb more CO than they release.
C. The uptake and release of carbon reach a balance.
D. Burning of plants returns carbon to the atmosphere.
29. What is paragraph 4 of the text mainly about
A. The measurement of the CO2 released.
B. The impact of the carbon sink weakening.
C. The method of the land carbon sink study.
D. The application of satellite data on greenness.
30. What caused the carbon sink to weaken in 2024
A. Increase in plant productivity.
B. Frequent wildfires and dry spells.
C. Weakened CO fertilization effect.
D. Faster decomposition of organic matter.
31. What does the underlined word“blip” in the last paragraph mean
A. Temporarily. B. New beginning. C. Potential challenge. D. Confirmed trend.
D
Digital design sounds harmless enough. Dark patterns, less so. These are user interfaces (界面)that trick consumers into making choices they otherwise wouldn't.
A button declining an offer might read“Yes, I would like to miss out on the bargain of the century”—— three times bigger and brighter than the one for“I'd just like the thing I came here for.” The cancellation journey is so complicated that users forget their original goal.
Such practices are effective in the short term. A 2021 study by Jamie Luguri and Lior Strahilevitz from the University of Chicago exposed samples of dark patterns when promoting a free trial of a service. Mild dark patterns, such as a choice between one button marked“Accept and continue(Recommended)”, and another marked“Other Options” made participants more than twice as likely to proceed as members of a control group exposed to a simple“Accept” or“Decline” choice. Aggressive designs, such as forcing people to click through several screens in order to decline the service, more than quadrupled (四倍) the acceptance rate. Numbers such as these are hard for bosses to dismiss.
Dark patterns aren't entirely evil. Some designs are contextually reasonable. For example, showing few available hotel rooms helps users avoid missing bookings. And mild persuasion is part of commerce.Advertising, as H. G. Wells, a social critic put it, isn't“pure truth”, but not completely lying either.Consumers also distinguish misleading levels. A recent paper found that people objected more to artificially hiring a child actor to represent poverty in a village than to selecting real poor children.
Dark patterns spread easily, but lawmakers have cracked down on these practices. Last month, the Federal Trade Commission reached a record $2.5bn settlement with Amazon, accuseing the company of tricking consumers into signing up for Prime subscriptions and making cancellation unreasonably hard.In fact, the company's practice backfired. A Stanford study by Nadeep Saini found customers feared overspending and fewer signed up for auto-renewal than auto-expiration (到期). Dark patterns harm consumers in a self-defeating way and firms as well, Saini noted.
32. Why does the author mention the“two buttons” in Paragraph 2
A. To highlight the offer's appeal.
B. To explain dark patterns' popularity.
C. To present customers' behavioral patterns.
D. To show the design's misleading effects.
33. What can be inferred about the 2021 study
A. Bosses dismiss complex interfaces.
B. Paid service sign-ups were its goal.
C. Mild designs outperformed aggressive ones.
D. Simpler options had a lower acceptance rate.
34. Which best reflects a“contextually reasonable” design
A. Using child actors to fake poverty. B. Hiding cancel buttons in sub-menus.
C. Displaying limited flight seats left. D. Forcing registration to access content.
35. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. A Study on Dark Patterns' Effectiveness
B. The Double-Edged Nature of Dark Patterns
C. The Fight against Misleading Digital Design
D. A How-to Guide for Digital Trick Identification

There are so many situations when it is so easy to say“I told you so.” An opportunity is lost because someone didn't check their email. Despite multiple warnings, a loved one was taken in by a deceptive(欺骗性的) phone call. 36 But is that the approach a friend or a family member benefits from the most
When someone makes a careless mistake, this may be the time when they most need support and least need judgment. They already know the lesson. 37 What is beneficial in these situations is somebody who loves them, even if what they did seemed avoidable or careless.
Imagine you have made an error. Let's say you were cheated, and ended up losing a few hundred dollars. 38 Actually, someone who had lots of expertise at it found a way to fool you. If the friend you tell tries to make the point that you should have seen through it, which you already know, that just makes you feel worse.
So, what can you do when confronted with situations that tempt you to say“I told you so”
39 This means paying attention to the person speaking, with eye contact and affirming gestures, asking relevant questions, and summarizing the person's main points. Most importantly, this active listening happens without critical comments or questions.
Return the person's sense of agency, which is often weakened in challenging situations such as these.“What can you do to make it better ” 40 They have to reestablish themselves as a capable person who will prevent such events from recurring(复现) in the future. Part of agency can be the lessons learned.
A. Don't completely take over for them.
B. It's crucial to learn from this experience.
C. Offer to be part of figuring out a solution.
D. You didn't do anything wrong intentionally.
E. Spend some time non-judgmentally listening.
F. Saying"I told you so" won't make the lesson sink in more deeply.
G. Many would say these are opportunities for"natural" consequences.

On a mid-autumn night, Australian scholar Jordan Martin walked through the moonlit courtyards of Yuelu Academy in Hunan province. In the quietness of the ancient halls, he felt the 56 (weigh)of a thousand years of learning. That sense of continuity explains why Martin 57 (stay) in China for over a decade. After earning his master's and doctorate at the academy, he 58 (join) its faculty(学院) in 2022. Today, he teaches and researches pre-Qin philosophy.
Initially, his motivation was practical.“I wanted to master Chinese and needed immersion,” he recalls. A chance introduction brought him to Yuelu Academy. 59 he found there was more than an academic institution.“I was impressed by its history and sacredness (神圣). This is 60 placeI' ve dreamed of,” he says.
For Martin, becoming a teacher here is both pride and responsibility. Not 61 (grow) up in China, he's aware of his knowledge gaps.“To deserve the title‘teacher at Yuelu Academy’, I need to work twice 62 hard,” he admits. In class, he teaches in Chinese. The challenge lies not in vocabulary 63 precision.“Everything must be carefully prepared and clearly reasoned. That pushes me to be more rigorous (严谨),” he explains.
The academy's spirit, 64 (pass) down through its long history, is captured in a classic line:“Just as heaven keeps moving forward vigorously, a man of virtue should work 65 (continuous)to strengthen himself.” It is also Jordan's motto and method—— for study, teaching, and life.

It wasn't the weather that bothered Gina so much in winter. It was the lack of light. She longed sunshine, blue skies and the kind of white light that brightened whole days, lifting the spirit and promising adventures to come. She sighed, fearing her adventuring days were over. Yet, at the age of sixty-four, she still felt as young as she had decades ago.
Before she could sink into depressing thoughts, Gina heard the front door slam. Her granddaughter Beth stormed into the kitchen, dumping her backpack and collapsing into a chair at the kitchen table.
“Hello, love!” Gina said, delighted as always to see possibly her favourite person in the world.Beth had taken a year out after leaving school and was currently working in a supermarket to save up to go travelling in Asia with her best pal Jess, in January.
Beth looked up and Gina was surprised to see the young girl's eyes fill with tears. She rushed over and hugged her.“Sweetheart, what's happened ”
“Granny, you' ll never guess,” she sobbed.“Jess has pulled out of our trip—— she doesn't want to go travelling anymore! And Mum and Dad say I can't go on my own!” And with that, the poor girl put her head on the table and burst into tears.
Over several slices of toast and lots of tea, Beth told the full story—— how Jess had been having doubts due to the cost of the trip, how she was worried about being away from home for weeks…“What am I going to do, Gran ” Beth sobbed.“I' ve saved up all this money, we' ve paid a deposit(保证金) and the flights are all booked, but Mum says I'm too young to go by myself.”
Gina frowned. She could understand her daughter's concerns, but she also completely
sympathized with her granddaughter. She understood exactly how Beth was feeling. They were similar in lots of ways and she loved the fact that her granddaughter was so like the young woman she had been. Beth was bold and adventurous—— completely unlike her mum, Gina's daughter.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
The next day, Gina headed round to visit her daughter, Lucy.
She announced her decision to Lucy,“Then I will go with Beth.”

Dear David,
I am absolutely delighted to hear that you have won the first prize in the International Student Category of our school’s Chinese Poetry Competition! Warmest congratulations on this well-deserved achievement.
Your poem left a profound impression on me, not only because of its emotional depth, but also due to your outstanding writing skills. Firstly, the vivid imagery and thoughtful metaphors you employed beautifully conveyed the complex feelings of living between two cultures. Moreover, the structure of the poem demonstrates a clear grasp of classical Chinese poetic form, blending traditional rhythm with contemporary expression. Most importantly, you have managed to merge personal reflection with cultural insight, creating a piece that is both authentic and artistically sophisticated.
I sincerely hope this achievement inspires you to continue exploring the richness of Chinese literature and culture. Wishing you even greater success and joy in all your future creative and academic pursuits.
Yours,
Li Hua

【参考范文】
The next day, Gina headed round to visit her daughter, Lucy. Finding her daughter immersed in household chores, Gina gently broached the subject of Beth’s trip. Lucy expressed her deep concerns about Beth traveling alone at such a young age, her words laced with a mother’s understandable anxiety. Gina listened empathetically, then thoughtfully shared reflections from her own youth—how stepping beyond familiar boundaries had taught her invaluable lessons about resilience and self-reliance. She sensed Lucy’s apprehension beginning to ease, though not fully dissipating. Gina assured her that protecting Beth didn’t necessarily mean holding her back.
She announced her decision to Lucy, “Then I will go with Beth.” A wave of visible relief washed over Lucy’s face, her tense shoulders relaxing at once. That evening, when Beth arrived after work, Gina revealed the plan. Beth’s initial gloom transformed into tearful joy, and she embraced her grandmother tightly. Soon they were seated side by side, eagerly poring over maps and itineraries, their shared excitement tangible. Outside, the winter evening remained dark and cold, but within Gina’s home—and her heart—a new warmth and lightness had taken hold, promising sunshine, adventure, and precious time together.

M: Good afternoon. Now, I’ll tell you our swim classes at the Community Pool. Classes begin on Monday, May 1st, and will continue throughout the summer. Fifteen swim classes are being offered. Each class lasts ten hours. A new class starts each week of the summer. Each class costs $20. The pool is big enough for six students per class. Classes will increase in difficulty each week. Students can sign up for as many classes as they like, but they must pass the skill level test. For example, students who sign up for Level 4 must show their certificate for completing Level 3. Children cannot sign up for a level they are not ready for. Children who have never attended Community Pool classes must show up on April 29th or 30th for a swim skill show. Instructors will rate the students and assign them to a particular skill level.
