"It can be quite challenging to prove that dietitians are here to help them and that we are not the food police," said Mense. "There are times when players don't listen to the education and injure themselves. But it's always so awesome to see when it works for them." Nevertheless, Mense feels fulfilled in her role and continues to push the athletes.

Eight - year - old S. Hariraj is a Foldscope(折叠显微镜) enthusiast. He's used it to examine the milk from his family's cows. Though the milk looks creamy, the Foldscope reveals a world of microorganisms. "It's has to be boiled and cooled before we can drink it," he realized.
This incredible device is no ordinary microscope. Made from waterproof, tear - resistant paper, it comes in a small bag with parts that can be attached in minutes. Magnets(磁铁) hold it together, and a tiny lens(透镜) allows it to enlarge objects up to 140 times. Once built, it's no larger than a bookmark, small enough to slip into a pocket. And the best part It costs just $2 to produce, and millions of children in low - income countries get them for free.
The idea for the Foldscope began with Manu Prakash, a professor at Stanford University, who grew up in India. When he was in sixth grade, he and his classmates failed to draw a microscope in a test-- none of them had ever seen one. Microscopes were expensive, and not all schools could afford a well - equipped lab. "The spirit of exploration was critical to the study of science," says Prakash. "But in order to develop that spirit, you need the right tools." Determined to change the situation, Prakash spent years experimenting, even borrowing lenses from his brother's glasses. In 2014, he and his Ph. D. student finally developed the Foldscope, using paper - folding techniques to create an alternative to traditional microscopes.
Young Hariraj encountered the Foldscope at Eden School in southern India, where it has transformed science lessons. Children eagerly rush outdoors, searching for ants, flowers, and leaves to examine. I just love the look of amazement when kids look into the Foldscope, says Indira Pandiara jan, the school principal. "When their eyes light up, I know that's the moment they will accept science enthusiastically and learn it for the rest of their lives."
28. Why does the author mention Hariraj in paragraph 1
A. To show a world of microorganisms. B. To describe his family life.
C. To introduce the topic of Foldscope. D. To explain milk's components.
29. What is a feature of the Foldscope according to the text
A. It is user - friendly. B. It is expensive.
C. It is personalized. D. It is magnetic - resistant.
30. Why did Manu Prakash decide to develop the Foldscope
A. To popularize mini - type teaching tools in India.
B. To pursue his career in studying microorganism.
C. To complete a project assigned by his professor.
D. To make microscopes more affordable and available.
31. What can be inferred from Indira Pandiarajan's words
A. Foldscope can ease teaching workload.
B. India has transformed science lessons.
C. Scientific spirit inspires the sense of responsibility.
D. Foldscope stimulates students' passion for science.

It's nice to have your research covered by the national media, but recent biology graduate Jewel Garcia at Seattle Pacific University(SPU) adds it's better to conduct the research with "an awesome team of professors and peers(同辈)."
Garcia's yearlong research study, "Dishonest salmon(三文鱼) business in Seattle's sushi restaurants and grocery stores", was led by SPU Biology Professor Tracie Delgado and conducted with three fellow students. The group acquired salmon samples from 67 grocery stores and 52 sushi restaurants. DNA from each sample was tested in the lab to identify the fish. The study revealed that 11% grocery stores and 33% Seattle - area sushi restaurants with wild salmon on the menu were actually farmed salmon.
Conducting this type of student research is usually done in graduate school, but professor Delgado says undergraduate research is a unique feature of the SPU Biology Department. "By providing students with research opportunities in the classroom, they not only grow as a scientist, but they also develop the self - confidence to become leaders in their future careers," says Delgado.
Garcia, who did a similar study of salmon in her genetics class, was grateful to get this opportunity. "You can get awesome support at SPU because the process was collaborative. Every aspect had so many hands on it and you were in close contact with so many professors," says Garcia.
SPU's location also proved importance for the study. Washington state is a global supplier of several Pacific Ocean salmon species, and a 2013 law requires salmon to be identified as wild - caught Pacific or farm - raised Atlantic. "Failure to properly label wild salmon is a serious problem because it prevents accurate tracking of supply chains and makes it more difficult to sustain wild salmon," says Delgado. "It's important to continue to develop and enforce law that requires accurate seafood labeling, from fisher to plate, and educate the public on how commercial salmon cheating impacts wild salmon conservation. This is the realistic meaning of the research."
32. What did the study reveal about the salmon business in Seattle
A. One - third of wild salmon in Seattle were not fresh.
B. Some wild salmon were replaced with farmed ones.
C. Salmon in the restaurants actually was another species.
D. Both wild and farmed salmon were available in the market.
33. What does the underlined word "collaborative" mean in paragraph 4
A. Cooperative. B. Independent. C. Complicated. D. Flexible.
34. What is the significance of accurately labeling wild salmon according to the text
A. It makes salmon easier to identify.
B. It limits the supply of farmed salmon.
C. It facilitates salmon conservation efforts.
D. It reduces the impact of commercial cheating.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Are you really eating wild salmon B. SPU research on fishing industry
C. How can seafood business restore credit D. A novel way of labeling wild salmon

A new study suggests that sleep plays a significant role in our capacity to learn and take on new information. If you' re planning on learning a new language in the coming year, research says prioritizing proper sleep will help your brain to store information more efficiently.
The findings are based on a clinical trial conducted by an Australian research team. 36 They were divided into two groups: half of them learned the language in the morning and returned in the evening to have their memory tested. Meanwhile, the other half learned Chinese Pinyin in the evening, slept through the night and had their memory tested the next morning. 37
Results revealed that those who slept after learning the language performed better in the memory test. 38 Researchers discovered the truth is that certain brain activities during sleep significantly improve our capacity to store and recall new vocabulary. So, if you' re starting to learn a new language, sleep is the key.
39 First, set a consistent sleep schedule. Going to bed and waking up at roughly the same time every day helps your brain and body prepare for sleep, making it easier to fall asleep faster. Second, clean up your sleep hygiene(卫生). It means your bedroom temperature is right for you, light is blocked out, and your sleep environment is clean. Lastly, cut out caffeine(咖啡因) at least 5 hours before bed. Sleep does not just mean a time to rest, it's also an active transformative state of the brain. Consuming large amounts of caffeine has been shown to disturb this process by causing disruptions to your deep sleep phase. 40
A. Caffeine affects us all differently.
B. Why sleep is crucial for keeping information
C. This in turn will impact your learning outcomes.
D. How does sleep help us with energy and focus
E. How can you sleep better for improved learning
F. In the study, researchers asked 35 participants to learn Chinese Pinyin.

"Hey, Mia Ready for summer " her best friend, Chloe, approached with a wide smile. Um, not yet, Mia replied, looking down at her feet. "I just don't know what I should do after graduation." Chloe said, "You're the smartest one I know What's holding you back " Mia took a deep breath. "It's just… everything feels so uncertain. I want to be a professional singer, but I also feel like writing is my thing."
As summer unfolded, Mia was often found at the village library. One evening, she was drawn to a self - help book titled Fearless: How to Embrace(拥抱) Uncertainty. The sentences struck her. "Sometimes, you have to face uncertainty directly instead of running away from it. Your future isn't a single path; it's an ever - changing journey."
The next day, Chloe told Mia a summer music festival would be held in town. "You should enter! You can sing!" she suggested enthusiastically. "No way" Mia protested, her cheeks turning red. "Give it a shot Remember how everyone loves your voice " Chloe urged. Then the book's words crossed her mind - it's not just about the thing itself; 它's about showing up and being seen. Hesitantly, she agreed, thinking maybe this could be a chance to overcome her fears.
The day of the festival arrived. After Mia's performance, Mr. Henderson, a local music producer, approached her and said, "You have a beautiful voice, Mia. Have you ever thought about pursuing music professionally " Shocked, she smiled slightly and explained, "I don't know whether that's what I really want. I'm scared, honesty." Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to share my thoughts regarding the upcoming Problem - Solving Workshop. This initiative is truly commendable as it will provide students with valuable support in addressing both academic and personal challenges.
To make the workshop more effective, I would like to suggest implementing a peer mentoring system where experienced senior students can guide the juniors. Additionally, organizing regular theme - based sessions focusing on common student concerns such as exam stress or time management would be highly beneficial. To encourage wider participation, we could also introduce an anonymous problem submission box to help shy students voice their concerns comfortably.
I sincerely hope these suggestions will be helpful. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
读后续写
Spending all night thinking about it, Mia decided to go. The moment she stepped into the studio, surrounded by instruments and creativity, enthusiasm arose within her. With Mr. Henderson's encouragement, she experimented with melodies alongside established artists, losing herself in the joy of creation. However, doubts soon returned. What if music didn't bring lasting happiness She wanted to be a writer too. Hesitating between the studio, where she felt lively yet insecure, and her writing desk, where she felt safe yet some spiritless. Mia turned to Chloe for help.
"What if you pursued both " Chloe suggested. Chloe's advice inspired her to consider the possibility of combining the two seemingly unrelated passions. That night, after a long talk with Chloe, Mia penned her thoughts, integrating her love for writing and singing into a song. As the last verse finished, the two friends high - lived each other and Mia knew she didn't have to limit herself to a single definition. The following months saw Mia's growth - she wrote lines for her songs, expressing herself fearlessly. The future was unpredictable, but Mia was determined to shape one for herself.

W: Get up, Mark. It snowed during the night. The school bus won't be able to come.
M: Oh, I'll go by bike.
W: Don't be silly. The snow's far too deep for that.
M: Then I'll ski. That'll be quicker than walking.
Text 2
M: Excuse me, Ms. Henderson I can't come to work on Wednesday. I have a doctor's appointment.
W: OK. Remember there is an important conference on Thursday afternoon. You have to prepare well for it.

W: Look, these carrots are looking a little dry. When was the last time you added water to them
M: Oh, do they need water I thought it was only the cabbage on Shelf 2.
W: Yes, they do. And don't forget to arrange the dairy section.
Text 4
M: I forgot to bring my charger for my phone. Do you have a spare one I could borrow
W: I have an extra one you can use. It's in my laptop bag. You can keep it for the whole day.
M: Thanks a lot. I'll make sure to return it by the end of the day.
Text 5
W: If you're considering buying a car, I'm trying to get rid of mine. All it needs is some new paint.
M: Thanks. But I'm buying a new car.
Text 6
W: Good afternoon and welcome to Habitat Hunters. You must be Joseph.
M: Yes. You said on the phone that I could come at 3:30 p. m. Sorry that I'm half an hour earlier.
W: No problem at all. Sit down here now, sir. Let's talk a little about the places before we go and have a look. Now, we have two apartments available. The first one is on Beatle Road. It's a two - bedroom apartment with a bathroom and a big living room, and it is fully furnished.
M: Okay. Tell me about the next option.
W: The other apartment is on Oakington Avenue. It is right near your school.
M: Wow, that sounds better. How much is this one

M: What's up, Emily Is there anything worrying you
W: I didn't get a good mark in swimming. Now I have to take the class again.
M: You already know how to swim. Why is it so important to you It's not like you're trying out for the swimming team.
W: No, but I need to perform very well so I can become a lifeguard.
M: I see. So what do you have to work on
W: I can hold my breath for a long time and my body is flexible. But my coach said I need to improve my strength, or I won't be able to save someone's life when the time comes.
M: You just need to practice more. Now take it easy. Why don't we go to get some ice cream
W: Fine, but your treat.

W: Have you noticed the recent changes at the restaurant
M: Yeah, like the new takeout service and the push for more organic ingredients, right
W: Exactly, we're becoming more environmentally - friendly! But it concerns me that the increasing workload will burn some people out. We've got some great staff I'd hate to lose.
M: Yeah, I agree.
W: As a kitchen manager, these developments are making me rethink how we support the staff. Well, I'm considering talking with Bill, the boss, to take measures to reduce the burden on the staff.
M: That makes sense. With the increase in takeout orders, I've been thinking about making a shift, too.
W: What are you considering
M: Well, I'm thinking of starting my own business in the future.
W: Really That's quite different from frying vegetables in the kitchen.
M: Yeah, but the more delivery - based the restaurant industry becomes, the more opportunities we get.
W: Hmm... It seems like a smart move then. These changes are turning our lives upside down! Ha - ha!
M: Absolutely! The only consistent thing is the changing world.
Text 9
W: You were really lost in thought, Jerry. What are you thinking
M: Hi, Tina. I'll go back home to visit my family for a couple of weeks. And I was just thinking about what kinds of gift I should bring back from China for them.
W: How about some Chinese kites
M: Hey, that's a good idea! I've heard Chinese kites have a long history.
W: Absolutely! Kites were first created over 2,000 years ago in China. A philosopher named Mozi made the earliest wooden kite, later improved with bamboo by his student Lu Ban. People even tied whistles to kites to make music in ancient times!
M: Wow! But why are they shaped like animals
W: Great question! Traditional designs like dragons, phoenixes, or eagles symbolize cultural meanings - dragons represent power, while birds mean freedom.
M: Fascinating! What materials are used in making kites now
W: Modern kites combine silk, paper, and bamboo frames. The craftsmanship is delicate - balancing weight and flexibility.
M: I'd love to try making one. Is it hard
W: Well, it takes skill! Ancient Chinese believed kites could send messages to the heavens - today, we just enjoy watching them dance in the wind!
M: Great! My family will like them.
Text 10
Hello everyone, I'm Alex Johnson. And I suppose you all know that we're gathered here to celebrate ten years of the Horizon youth program. I understand many of you volunteer at the shelter or teach at the Horizon day school. And there are numerous others who contribute financially to the program, which is equally crucial. Everyone who has benefited from the program is deeply grateful to all of you.
The program virtually saved my life. I became homeless when I was fifteen and lived on the streets. Even worse, I once broke the law. Eventually, the police station contacted a volunteer from Horizon, and the volunteer enrolled me in the program. They provided me with shelter, a part - time job, and assisted me in obtaining my high school diploma. Now, I'm attending college and working part - time at the Horizon shelter, where I encounter troubled youth who are much younger than I once was. So, I witness daily the impact of your generosity on homeless individuals.
Next, I'd like to introduce the remarkable woman who is responsible for all of this. The President, Laura Harris, will share with us the story of the founding of the Horizon youth program.
