Very soon after Roberta wrote to the old gentleman, the three children were walking through the tunnel when they heard a cry.
The children ran deeper into the tunnel. Before long, they found a boy. He was lying on the ground.
“What happened ” Roberta asked him.
“I’m Jim. I was walking through the tunnel when I fell over. I think I’ve broken my leg.” “The 11:15 train is coming soon,” Peter said. “We must get you out of here.”
“I’ve been here for two hours,” the boy said. “I was on my way to the station to catch the train. It’s quicker through the tunnel than along the road.”
“It’s also more dangerous,” Roberta said.
Peter said. “We’ve got to get you out.” Then Peter and Phyllis helped Jim up. It was a difficult
journey, but the children got there before the 11:15 train did. Finally, a signalman helped them and took Jim to Peter’s home.
Mother called for a doctor and helped Jim rest. The doctor said Jim needed to stay in bed for at least a month. “Can he stay with us ” Peter said. “We’d love to have a friend our own age.” “Sure,” said mother.
A few days later, Jim’s grandfather came to take Jim home. The children were surprised to see him. “You’re our old gentleman!” they exclaimed.
“That’s right,” he said. “And I got your letter, Roberta.” “What letter ” mother asked.
“Roberta wrote to me about her father,” the old gentleman said. “I was not surprised by what she said. I have thought for a long time that he couldn’t have done such a terrible thing. It was not possible that a guilty (有罪的) man could have such wonderful children. I think I can help you. Your father will soon be free again.”
Two weeks later, father came back home.

“They have started to fight!” I cried. Ben Gunn and I ran towards the ship. As we ran, we heard some pistol (手枪) shots. Then in front of me I saw a Union Jack (米字旗) flying in the air above the trees.
The flag was flying from a wooden fort (堡垒) that stood on a hill looking over the beach. Ben Gunn stopped. “Your friends are there,” he said. “Join them. When you want me, come to where you found e alone, and carry something white so that I will know it’s you.”
Just then there was a loud bang (巨响) . A cannonball (炮弹) came flying through the air, and we both ran off in opposite directions. The shots continued for another hour. I moved quietly through the trees. The pirates’ flag, the Jolly Roger, was flying on the Hispaniola.
Down on the beach below the fort, the pirates were breaking up the rowing boat. Further down the beach there was a large fire. One of the pirates’ boats was coming and going between the beach and the ship. I also noticed some white rocks and I knew that was where Ben Gunn’s boat was. I then ran to the fort where I found my friends. We sat and told each other our stories.
The doctor told his story first, “Six of the original crew (原来的船员) were still on the ship. They were all together at the front of the ship. When we heard that you, Jim, were ashore with the mutineers (叛变者), Hunter and I decided to go ashore (在岸上), too. We took another small boat and landed at a different part of the beach from the mutineers. Hunter stayed to guard the boat and I went into the woods. After about one hundred metres, I found this fort. As you can see, it has a strong fence (栅栏) and it is in a good position. “I wish to talk to the boy, please,” he said afterwards.
“Hawkins,” said Silver, “Promise that you won’t try to escape.”
I agreed. Silver asked the doctor to climb outside the fort. He then took me down to talk with him from inside the fence and left us alone.
“Why did you leave, Jim ” the doctor asked me and I told him about the Hispaniola. “You always save us, Jim, you even found Ben Gunn. Jump over the fence and run away with me,” he begged.
“I can’t. I promised,” I said seriously. Then the doctor called Long John Silver over.
“I’ll give you some advice,” he said. “Don’t hurry to look for the treasure.”
“But the only way to save my life and the boy’s is by looking for the treasure.” said Silver.
“In that case, be ready for problems when you find it,” said Dr. Livesey. “Keep Jim close beside you, and when you need help, shout.”
He then shook hands with me through the fort fence. He nodded to Silver and went quickly into the woods.
“Jim,” said Silver, “I thank you for refusing to go with the doctor. You saved my life then, and I won’t forget it.”
After we ate breakfast, Silver told the pirates his plan. “They have the ship,” he said. “Once we have the treasure we’ll find the ship, and then we’ll have the upper hand. I will tie our hostage (人质) up to go treasure-hunting.”
I saw how cleverly Silver kept the pirates on his side. But I also realized that he had a foot in both camps. He could go with us or with the pirates.

I wanted to go and look at a place in the middle of the island that I had found when I was exploring. So we started and soon got to it, because the island was only three miles long and a quarter of a mile wide.
This place was a hill about forty feet high. We had a hard time getting to the top. The sides were so steep (陡峭的) and the trees were so thick. We walked and climbed around all over it, and found a good big hole in the rock. It was a good place to play our game. The hole was as big as two or three rooms, and Jim could stand up straight in it. It was cool there. Jim wanted to put our things there, but I said we didn’t want to be climbing up and down there all the time.
Jim said if we had the boat hidden in a good place and put all the things in the hole, we could rush there when anybody came to the island. They would never find us without dogs. Besides, he said that little birds had said it was going to rain. We didn’t want the things to get wet.
________ Then we found a place close by to hide the boat in, among the thick willows (柳树). We took some fish off the lines and set them again, and began to get ready for dinner.
There was a good place to build a fire in the hole. So we built a fire and cooked dinner. We spread the blankets inside, and ate our dinner. We put all the other things at the back of the hole.
Pretty soon it darkened and began to thunder. Directly it began to rain, and I never saw the wind blow so heavily. It was one of these regular summer storms. It would get so dark that it looked all blue-black outside. The rain poured so heavily that the trees looked unclear.

“What do you want ” asked Pinocchio.

“Oh, Fairy, my Fairy,” the Pinocchio cried out. “Give me that glass! Quick, please! I don’t want to die!” And holding the glass with his two hands he swallowed (吞下) the medicine quickly. Then the rabbits had to leave.
After that, the Fairy added, “Pinocchio, tell me how you were in the hands of the robbers last time.”
“I had five gold pieces to give to my Father, but on the way I met two robbers. They tied my neck with a rope and hung me to a tree.” said Pinocchio.

It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced (浮出水面). I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”
“I do,” replied the Captain. “But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits (潜水服) that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, but he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We must go through it.
We were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colours of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper. Two hours later, we were a hundred metres under the water. The suits worked very well.
At one hundred metres deep, we could still see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small shrubs (灌木) grew under the large seaweed trees. Some of them had flowers.
We walked through this forest for about an hour, and then we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but I was very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up, we walked further.

There is now a thick white fog over the moor. “The fog is getting thicker,” says Holmes. “This is very serious, Sir Henry must go home soon.”
Suddenly, we hear footsteps. They get closer and we see Sir Henry walking towards us through the fog. Then, we hear something. A terrible animal appears. It is a huge black hound. There is fire coming from its mouth and its huge eyes are glowing.
The hound runs after Sir Henry. Holmes and I both fire our guns. We hit it but the hound doesn’t stop. It jumps on Sir Henry and pushes him to the ground. Holmes points his gun and shoots the hound five times. The giant hound is dead. Sir Henry is lying on the path. We run to him and find he is alive.
I put my hand on the hound’s glowing face and find my own fingers glow in the dark, “Phosphorous (含磷的),” I say.
We walk towards Merripit House to search for Stapleton. In the house we don’t find him, but we find Mrs. Stapleton tied in a bedroom. We untie her. When she knows Sir Henry is alive and the hound is dead, she cries, “Thank God!”
“Now we have proof, we need Stapleton,” says Holmes.

Once again the Captain’s will won. Silent, the men returned to their posts. But Captain Columbus was worried because he knew in his heart that a day would come when his words would no longer help. Before that day, he would see land.
Not an eye closed that night. The Captain stood on the high poop (艉楼) and with sleepless eyes he tried hard to look into the darkness ahead.
Then, two hours before midnight, the miracle happened. A far-off light struck his eyes. It wavered (摇曳) once or twice, moving quickly on the horizon, like a fisherman’s boat on the waves.
His heart hammered (砰砰直跳). But he dared not cry out, “Land!”
“Your eyes are sharp, Alfredo,” he whispered to a young sailor. “Tell me what you see.” Even as he spoke, the light disappeared.

“Wanted: Violin. Can’t pay much. Call...”
Why did I notice that I wondered, since I seldom look at such ads.
I put the paper on my lap and closed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years before, when my family struggled to make a living on our farm. I, too, had wanted a violin, but we couldn’t afford.
When my arms grew long enough, how I wanted one! But I knew it was out of the question.
It was not a good year. The crops did not bring as much as we had hoped at harvest. Yet even though times were hard, I couldn’t wait any longer to ask, “Daddy, may I have a violin of my own ”
Daddy looked sad. That night, and many following nights, I heard him remind God in our family devotions, “… and Lord, Mary wants her own violin.”
One evening we all sat at the table. Daddy wrote a letter to his friend, Mr. Finkle, a fine violinist.
When Daddy received a letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he announced, “We’ll be driving to Columbus.”
The day finally arrived. After we got there, Mr. Finkle, a tall man, opened the door. “Come in!” He picked up a case, opened it, lifted out a violin and started to play.
“Carl, I found it in a pawn shop for seven dollars. It’s a good violin. Mary should be able to make beautiful music with it.” Then he handed the violin to me.
I noticed the tears in Daddy’s eyes as I finally understood. It was mine!
When I was ready to join the school orchestra (管弦乐队), I trembled with excitement. I sat in the third row of violins and wore my white orchestra jacket like a royal robe. My heart beat wildly at my first public performance, a school operetta. I felt sure everyone in the audience was watching me. Daddy and Mother smiled proudly at their little girl. And soon I found myself in the first-violin chair.
I thought of Daddy, who did all he could to fill my desires when I was young. I wonder if I had ever thanked him.
At last I picked up the newspaper, walked to the phone and dialed the number. Later that day, a man knocked on the door. “My daughter wants a violin so badly,” he said, “How much are you asking ” Any music store, I knew, would offer me a nice price. But now I heard my voice answer, “Seven dollars.”
“Are you sure ” he asked, reminding so much of Daddy.
Later, I saw his wife and children waiting in an old car. The door suddenly opened and a young girl ran to him. She hugged the violin case against her, then dropped to her knees and snapped open the case. She touched the violin lightly as it caught the glow of the late-afternoon Sun, then turned and threw her arm around her smiling father.

①The scientific method is used for simple experiments that students may do in the classroom or very difficult experiments that scientists are doing all over the world. It is a way of thinking that helps you to avoid drawing incorrect conclusions. There are usually four steps in the scientific method, including observation (观察), hypothesis (假设), experiment, and conclusion.
②The steps may not always be completed in the same order, but the first step is usually observation and asking a question about your observation. You may have the experience that you had a sick stomach, and ate a candy bar. An hour later, you observed that you felt much better. Here, you can ask a question, such as, “What makes a sick stomach feel better ”
③The second step is to state a possible answer to the question, or a hypothesis, such as “________”. A good hypothesis includes three things: The explanation for the observations, it is able to be tested, and it will usually predict new results or conclusions.
④The third step is the experiment, to test the hypothesis. An experiment is a test which will either challenge or support the hypothesis. The hypothesis will then be true or false.
⑤The final step is to think about what happened when you tested the hypothesis and draw a conclusion. The conclusion will either clearly support the hypothesis or it will not. If the results support the hypothesis, a conclusion can be written and you can share it with the rest of the world. If it does not support the hypothesis, you may choose to change the hypothesis or write a new one based on what was learned during the experiment.
⑥In most cases, the scientific method is an iterative (迭代的) process. In other words, it’s a cycle rather than a straight line. The result of one go-round becomes feedback that improves the next round of question asking.

An invasive species (入侵物种) of ant, called “big-headed ant”, is changing the way lions hunt and eat in Kenya, according to a new study. The ants spread because of human activities like trade and travel. They arrived in Kenya from southern Africa about 15 years ago. Since then they have been killing the local acacia ant.
Acacia ants live in and take care of the whistling thorn trees in Kenya. In a “symbiotic relationship”, acacia ants get food from the trees and use them for home. In return, they protect the trees from animals like elephants or giraffes, which might eat too much of the trees. Acacia ants do this through attacking these animals in group.
However, big-headed ants eat acacia ants and their eggs. As a result, the number of acacia ants is falling. What’s more, big-headed ants don’t protect whistling thorn trees either. So with fewer acacia ants to save them, the trees are in trouble.
Professor Palmer’s team found that in areas with big-headed ants, elephants destroyed more trees. This means the place is more open and zebras can easily find lions following them. So lions kill much fewer zebras in these areas than in tree-filled places.
The good news is that the lion population remains unchanged because the lions turn to hunt buffalo for food instead of zebras. This probably means that the tiny ants have caused lions to change their habits too. They have to hunt the bigger, heavier buffalo. Professor Palmer said, “We often find it’s the little things that rule the world.”

Hundreds of pedestrians (行人) in Tianjin have been punished so far this year for looking at their mobile phones while crossing the road. The regulation (规定) says that pedestrians who look at their mobile phones while crossing the road will receive a warning or a fine of 50 yuan if they refuse to correct their behaviour.
“The warning is not a simple reminder. It is a legal (合法的) way with a legal punishment notice given to the pedestrians,” Xing Yi, an official of the government, said. “Those who refuse to cooperate with the traffic police or whose behaviour harms other people will be fined 50 yuan.”
Zhou Xin works in a busy area in Tianjin. He says that he gives such punishment three to five times each day, and most of the time the legal warning is useful.
“More and more people look at their mobile phones while crossing roads, which raises the risk of traffic accidents,” said Yang Yingjun, another official of the government. The regulation is trying to make people pay more attention to safety when they walk.
Yang said that in 2019, a local university student who was looking at his mobile phone while crossing a road was hit and killed by a large truck. Similar accidents have been reported in many cities, such as Taizhou and Wenzhou, so those cities have similar regulations.

Facing a poster of a horror movie, some people can’t wait to enjoy it while some quickly close their eyes, hoping for removing the picture from minds. Most of us simply consider that different reactions (反应) are down to their different characters. Dr. Sherry, from Dalhousie University, says it is the brain which shape our reactions to fear.
According to Sherry, the brains of the people who love scary movies seem to need a lot more excitement. That’s because their excitability (兴奋性) is born staying low. Thus, their brains are naturally hunting for the chance to deal with that difference in them. That’s why some people are willing to pay a lot of money to jump out of an airplane. But not all of these people want to be in real danger. So, they choose to watch scary movies instead. My friend, Peter, an expert in skateboarding, loves watching scary movies as well. “Both horror movies and challenging skateboard movements offer my brain excitement,” he says.
“Other people avoid meeting horrors just because their brains usually have a really strong startle response (惊跳反应) , so when something scares them, they get hurt badly, no matter on their bodies or spirits.” Sherry says. “They are often thought to be more overreaction to unpleasant experience like being scared while watching a horror film.” “One of my friends, Miya had to be in hospital for special treatment last week, simply because of catching sight of a scary picture in a horror movie.”
But there’s also something interesting. Dr. Sherry says that if people keep watching scary movies a lot, they might not be as scared anymore. Our brain can get used to the scary things.
So, in the end, whether we like or dislike scary movies depends on our brains and how they deal with fear and excitement. It’s different from one to another, and that’s what makes us special when it comes to choosing movies.

Yingge dance has just become more popular. During the past Spring Festival, a team of Yingge dancers from South China’s Guangdong Province amazed people in London. The sound of drums, gongs and shouts echoed (回响) throughout London’s streets. It is the first time that the Yingge dance, a national cultural heritage (文化遗产) in China, has been performed overseas.
A viewer named Lucy said, “Watching the dance was like stepping into a different world with the vivid colors, the lively expressions of the dancers. We don’t get to see things like that here. I was left in amazement by the ancient dance.” “We’ve waited for 300 years for the dance group to come to Europe. I have to say, it was well worth the wait. It has stood out,” said another.

They also wear different opera-style makeups, according to their roles. Dancers wave a pair of short sticks and make powerful movements. They hit the sticks together now and then while walking and dancing.
The coach, Chen Laifa, is a national-level inheritor of Yingge dance. ① “When it first appeared 300 years ago, Yingge was a celebration of the success of goodness over evil, and nowadays it is seen as a peace messenger,” said Chen. “We would like to make this spirit known to the British people and, at the same time, as the spreading of our culture.”

①As a saying goes, “When one drinks water, one must not forget where it comes from.” However, many teenagers only care more about themselves instead of other things. Gratifyingly, little Ming is an exceptional. The boy who lived in Zhengzhou by the Yellow River, asked his mother a question which was puzzling him “Mum, why isn’t our water dirty Why does it taste so fresh ” His mother smiled, and told him “That’s because the water in our house comes from the Dan River in the south, by means of the South-to-North Water Diversion (转移) Project.”
What is the South-to-North Water Diversion Project
②As early as 1952, Chairman Mao Zedong pointed out “There is plenty of water in the south of our country, but a shortage of water in the north. If possible, we should borrow some water from the south.” This was the first time the great idea of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project had been mentioned. This project, as its name suggests, simply means ________.
How is the water diverted
③From the plan for the project, you can discover that most of the water will come from the Yangtze River. This is because the Yangtze River is China’s largest river basin, where water resources are constantly stable. You can also discover that the whole project is divided into western, central and eastern routes, to be completed one after the other, starting with the eastern one. And a close look at the plan will show that the Yangtze River’s water is extracted (抽取) by a pumping station, and is sent through a channel over one thousand kilometers to Tianjin and other places nearby.
④China’s great water diversion project has transferred nearly 30 billion cubic meters of water in the past five years. The first part of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project’s central route has directly helped over 120 million people since it went into operation on Dec. 12, 2014, according to the Ministry of Water Resources.
