Bananas, which contain a lot of vitamins and minerals needed by the body, represent one of nature's healthiest food choices. In fact, bananas have three times the amount of vitamins A and C found in apples. The tasty fruit also contains five times more protein than apples. These essential minerals and vitamins help control blood pressure and help muscle movement and digestion. Bananas provide not only physical benefits but also mental and emotional benefits. Bananas contain something that helps lift our mood. The next time you want to polish your shoes, reach for a banana skin. Some people insist that the inside of a banana peel can produce a great shine for your shoes. Many people believe that bananas should never be placed in the refrigerator, but it's just not true. The banana industry has been working hard to correct this myth for years. While banana skins will turn dark in the refrigerator, the fruit will spoil less quickly in the refrigerator's cool environment.
18.Which is NOT a benefit of the minerals and vitamins found in bananas
A.Controlling blood pressure.
B.Aiding muscle movement.
C.Keeping off cold.
答案:C
19.What effect can bananas have on people's emotions
A.They make people high spirited.
B.They make people low spirited.
C.They make people less emotional.
答案:A
20.What will happen if a banana is placed in a refrigerator
A.Its appearance will remain the same.
B.It won't go bad quickly.
C.Its flesh will turn dark soon.

Discover Nature Schools Programs
Becoming Bears (Kindergarten-2 grade)
By becoming baby bears, children learn from their “parent” to survive the seasons. Kids will find safety in the spring and learn kinds of food bears eat during the summer, and then create a cave for winter hibernation (冬眠). After learning the skills needed to survive, students will go out of the cave as an independent black bear able to care for themselves. (1.5-2 hours)
Whose Clues (3-5 grade)
Kids will discover how plants and animals use their special structures to survive. Through outdoor study of plants and animals, kids will recognize their special structures and learn how they enable species to eat, avoid their enemies and survive. Using what they have learned, kids will choose one species and tell how they survive in their living places. (3-4 hours)
Winged Wonders (3-5 grade)
Birds add color and sound to our world and play an important ecological (生态的) role. Students will learn the basics of birds, understand the role birds play in food chains and go bird watching using field guides and telescopes. Students will do hands on activities. Students will use tools to build bird feeders, allowing them to attract birds at home.(3-4 hours)
Exploring Your Watershed (6-8 grade)
We all depend on clean water. Examine how our actions shape the waterways around us. Go on a hike to see first hand some of the challenging water quality problems in a city. Students will test the water quality to determine the health of an ecosystem.
Each program is taught for a class with at least 10 students.
All programs include plenty of time outdoors. So please prepare proper clothing, sunscreen and insect killers for children.

Tsunamis (海啸) are one of the most terrifying natural phenomena that the world suffers. The series of waves produced by the displacement of a large volume of water can be caused by several events, including earthquakes, underwater explosions and landslides. Once triggered (引发), a tsunami can hit the coast within minutes and its destructive power can be enormous.
At present, early warning systems rely on measuring the movement of dart buoys (浮标), which record changes in the sea level, or assessing the bottom water pressure of the developing tsunami. But they require the tsunami to physically reach the measurement location. The buoys could be fixed in the deep ocean, but this requires an unrealistically big number of buoys. Or people can fix the buoys along the shoreline, but due to the high speed of the tsunami, this method may leave no warning time for people on the land.
Instead, there is a new system—using sound waves to predict tsunamis. Sound waves caused by an earthquake can travel much faster than the tsunami that has been triggered. Using standard underwater microphones, we can record these sound waves long before the tsunami arrives regardless of the direction in which the tsunami will travel. The sound signals come from changes in pressure, so what we actually analyze is a series of data on how the pressure is changing overtime. Though buoys also show changes in pressure, the tsunami front must actually reach the buoys to inform us that there is an increase in the water surface. By using underwater microphones, however, we only need to catch the sound signals.
Though the idea of using sound waves to predict tsunamis has been put forward previously, the key to our idea is a new mathematical method that can be used to analyze these recorded sound signals in near real time. Once this is worked out, we can not only warn people of a tsunami but also more accurately estimate its size long before it reaches the shoreline.

Lions are the top tourist attraction to Kenya, especially in the Nairobi National Park. But they are also considered critically endangered as residents responded their attacking local live stock by killing. Paula Kahumbu, executive director of Wildlife Direct, a wildlife protection organization in Africa, has been studying the conflict between humans and lions. And her work led her to Richard Turere, a 13 year old inventor.
“From ages 6 to 9, I started looking after my father's cows,” Richard says. “I'd take them out in the morning and bring them back in the evening. We put them in a small cow shed (牛棚) at night,” and that's when the trouble would start. Lions would jump in the shed and kill the cows, which are enclosed and an easy target.
One night he was walking around with a flashlight and discovered the lions were scared of a moving light. An idea was born. Three weeks later, Richard invented a system of lights that flash around the cow shed, imitating a human walking around with a flashlight. Made from broken flashlight parts and an indicator box from a motorcycle, the system employed a solar panel to charge a battery that supplies power to the lights at night. Richard calls the system Lion Lights.
His simple solution was so successful that his neighbors heard about it and wanted Lion Lights, too. He installed the lights for them and for six other homes in his community. From there, the lights spread and are now being used in many countries including Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania.
“There have been a lot of efforts to protect the lions,” Kahumbu says. “Everyone is looking for a solution. One idea was land leases, another was lion proof fences. It's amazing that Richard had already come up with something that worked.”

A recent study by a team of researchers from Canada has uncovered that birds living in cities are not just better at problem solving and more skilled in tasks than those in the countryside: they also have stronger immune (有免疫力的) systems!
The research, headed by Audet, a PhD student at a university, examined the cognitive (认知的) abilities of city birds with those of their country cousins. The team did their study in Barbados because it needs a broad range of situations: from crowded modern cities to the countryside. They began by catching some birds from various parts of the Caribbean Island. The birds were then given several tasks. Some tested their associative learning skills while others were to observe how creative they were at problem solving. While country birds are also much braver, the city birds appeared to be more careful when facing unfamiliar things.
The results did not surprise the researchers. After all, birds living in cities and towns face many more challenges and dangers than those that live in the country. But as it turns out, the city birds proved to have better immunity and are therefore more resistant to diseases than those living in the countryside. While additional studies need to be done to see if this is true for all city birds, there is no reason to believe that the results would be any different.
Though this is the first time researchers have compared the cognitive abilities of birds living in different conditions, it is not the first study to examine the differences between city and country birds. Previous research has shown that blackbirds in cites are similarly more careful than country blackbirds, and that sparrows and blackbirds living in cities sing at a higher frequency to be heard over city noise and to make up for sound distortions (失真) caused by tall buildings. If only birds knew the advantages of living among humans, maybe more would move to cities!

Penguins are flightless birds that spend half their time on land and half in the water.
__36__ They have dark and white feathers, and their wings have evolved into flippers (脚蹼). Most penguins feed on fish, squid and other forms of sea life caught while swimming.
__37__ They are mostly found in groups that include thousands of penguins.Penguins each have their own unique mating call, and they use that to locate their mate and chicks in such a large group.
Although almost all penguin species are native to the Southern Hemisphere, they are not found only in cold Antarctica. __38__ Several species are even found in the temperate zone, and one species, the Galátpagos penguin, lives near the equator (赤道).
Unfortunately, many penguin species worldwide are facing threats. The biggest is climate change and global warming. As the earth warms up, the sheets of ice have melted, and the algae (藻类) that grow under the ice decrease. The algae are eaten by tiny creatures called zooplankton. When there is a drop in zooplankton, it affects the fish that depend on it. __39__
Another major threat is from oil spills. If coated with oil, penguins cannot float or swim in water. Also, if oil is swallowed, penguins will die from poison. __40__
A.These birds are very social.
B.In fact, only a few of them live so far south.
C.Penguins are highly adapted for life in the water.
D.The biggest threat for penguins comes from humans.
E.They have a tendency to live in a community together.
F.As a result, penguins have less fish to eat and thus starve.
G.Others include overfishing, illegal egg harvesting, and natural enemies.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The shelves in most supermarkets are full of family size this and multi buy that. However, if you're shopping for one, buying extra __56__ (benefit) from price reductions doesn't make sense. Either your shopping is then too heavy to carry home __57__ you can't use what you've bought while it's still fresh.
Of course, shops are not charities—they price goods in the way __58__ will make them the most money. If most of their customers are happy to buy larger quantities, that's __59__ they'll promote. But that leaves the solo (单独) customers out of pocket and disappointed.
Many supermarkets are no longer doing “buy one get one free” promotions because of the __60__ (criticize) that they lead to waste. Consumers prefer money off individual items. However, though it's nice to get a few cents off a pack of sausages, it would help even more if they could sometimes __61__ (offer) in smaller packs. Even the biggest sausage fan doesn't want to eat them every day.
If your supermarket sells loose produce, then buying smaller quantities is easier. Over the last two years, some supermarkets __62__ (start) selling chicken or salad in packs __63__ (design) with two halves containing separate portions (份). Then, when you use one section, __64__ other stays fresh.
Who knows, perhaps some of the more forward looking __65__ (one) may yet come out with a whole range of “just for you” pack sizes with special offers as well.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight year old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent's money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then—bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot (鼻涕) frozen to his face, a worn out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five dollar bill.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. Then, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn't have done.
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt?” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man's situation he would be freezing. He didn't have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
Then, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn't have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoons of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I was doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else.

The next time you want to polish your shoes,
reach for a banana skin.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
