Every morning at 6 a.m., Markus Hofimueller’s hands are already covered in flour as he mixes dough (生面团) for the bakery’s daily specials. The 22-year-old baker never imagined he would take over the management of a bakery from his fellow German friends. Bach’s Bakery, located in Changsha, is popular among the locals for hiring bakers with hearing disabilities.
What truly makes Markus special is his unusual approach to training. Last summer, he reached out to the local vocational school to invite deaf students to join his team. Every Tuesday afternoon, four students sit behind the counter while Markus teaches them how to shape croissants(羊角面包) and decorate cakes with sign language. “Working side by side with these young learners reminds me why I became a baker,” he smiles. “I’m happiest when I see them grow in the job, ” he says. “They accumulate more skills and knowledge and keep improving, which I value the most. ”
When asked about his future plans, Markus pauses thoughtfully. “I can’t predict if baking will be my lifelong career, but right now I know this is where I’m meant to be.” His eyes light up as he describes watching customers smile over their first bite of perfectly timed creme brulée (焦糖布丁). “There’s something magical about turning simple ingredients into moments of joy,” he explains.
This idea shapes everything he does. “My heart tells me baking isn’t just a job — it’s a responsibility to create happiness.” He hopes one day to open his own training center where experienced bakers can teach newcomers, not just the hearing-impaired, adding he wants to continue training more carefully and professionally.
From uncertain beginnings to purposeful creation, he trusts that following his passion has led him to the right place. He also wants to work with vocational schools so his employees can learn bakery skills with other students. “No matter what I do, I feel a strong sense of destiny (使命感). I trust my heart,” he says.
24. Why is Markus’s bakery so popular among locals in Changsha
A. He is a German. B. He sells daily specials.
C. He hires hearing-disabled bakers. D. He sticks to making cake by hand.
25. What makes Markus’ training approaches stand out
A. Concentrating on teamwork. B. Stressing skills and knowledge.
C. Focusing on profit-driven skills. D. Combining sign language teaching.
26. How does the idea influence Markus’s life
A. It makes him destiny-focused.
B. It forces him to be passion-driven.
C. It drives him to shoulder social responsibility.
D. It turns his baking style to artistic expression.
27. Which one can best describe Markus
A. Hardworking and selfish. B. Careful but stubborn.
C. Grateful and patient. D. Warm-hearted and determined.

Social running is now a popular activity in cities around the world. Running clubs show how this sport can be both fun and social. The first running club, the Thames Hare and Hounds, was started in London in 1868. At first, these clubs mainly attracted competitive runners. Over time, running clubs spread across the world. While they first attracted competitive runners, these clubs gradually appealed to a broader audience seeking support, motivation and friendship.
In recent years, social media and fitness apps have changed running clubs even more. These tools help runners connect online, organize events, and track their progress. This makes running easier to join and more inclusive for everyone.
Running with others has many benefits. When you chat while running, you naturally keep a comfortable pace. At first, people didn’t talk much. But after running together, they started planning to meet again!
Rachel Goldberg, a licensed marriage and family therapist (治疗专家), noticed that people open up more during exercise. “If you’re next to someone but not looking directly at them, it feels less nervous,” she said. This helps people have deeper conversations and build stronger friendships. Running also releases endorphins (内啡肽), the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. These chemicals reduce stress and make social connections feel more positive.
Keeping a conversational pace while running also has health benefits. This is called Zone 2 training, which means exercising at 60 — 70% of your maximum heart rate. Many people think this training is “too easy”. However, it actually helps — doing low-intensity (低强度) exercise on a regular basis builds strength so you’ll be able to go longer and further. Besides, you’re also going to recover faster and reduce your risk of injuries. And, compared to high-intensity exercises, which use sugar as fuel, low-intensity exercise burns fat more effectively.
28. Who would most likely be interested in joining a running club
A. Competitive athletes aiming to win races.
B. People who dislike any form of exercise.
C. Individuals wanting to improve mental health.
D. People seeking social connections and physical fitness.
29. According to the passage, which is a key benefit of joining a running club
A. It mainly improves competitive racing skills.
B. It combines social meeting with effective fat burning.
C. It helps reduce stress by losing weight.
D. It requires high-intensity workouts to build strength.
30. What can be inferred about Zone 2 training
A. It causes frequent injuries. B. It focuses on sugar burning.
C. It improves strength and burns fat. D. It requires intense physical effort.
31. What is the passage mainly about
A. The technological changes of running habits.
B. The science behind endorphins and exercise.
C. The historical development of running clubs.
D. The social and health benefits of running clubs.
D
Scientists in China have developed a technology that can replace high-strength plastics used in home facilities with bamboo fiber. Bamboo shoots up when it rains. Its growth is so fast that raw material costs are low. According to researchers at Northeast Forestry University, bioplastic made from bamboo is similar to oil-based plastic in strength, shapeability, and thermal stability (热稳定性), but can decompose (分解) in soil within fifty days. It can also be fully recycled while maintaining 90% of its strength.
As plastic pollution worsens, bioplastics — plastics made from natural materials — are gaining popularity, but they still account for only 0.5% of the more than 400 million tons of plastic produced every year. That is because bioplastics have lower mechanical strength than oil-based plastics and are difficult to apply easily in common production processes.
The Chinese team developed a method to produce plastic from cellulose, the fibrous component of bamboo. They first treated bamboo by adding zinc chloride (ZnCl ) and a simple acid. In experiments, the team said bamboo-based bioplastic showed mechanical strength outperforming that of conventional plant-based bioplastic. In tests of mechanical and thermal stability and shapeability, bamboo-based bioplastic demonstrated its potential as an industrial alternative.
The development of bamboo-based bioplastic by researchers at Northeast Forestry University represents a significant advancement in the pursuit of sustainable development. With its impressive mechanical properties and biodegradability, bamboo-based bioplastic stands out as a promising candidate for reducing plastic waste and reliance on oil.
However, the path to future widespread adoption requires overcoming challenges related to production scalability (可扩展性) and market acceptance. As industries explore the potential of bamboo-based bioplastic, the question remains: Can this innovation truly replace traditional plastics and transform our approach to sustainable production
32. What can we learn about the bamboo-based bioplastic
A. It is a sustainable plastic alternative.
B. It is difficult to break down in soil naturally.
C. It loses original strength when decomposing.
D. It is second to oil-based plastics in shapability.
33. What is the key advantage of bamboo-based bioplastic over past bioplastic
A. Simpler recycling process. B. Higher mechanical strength.
C. Cheaper raw materials. D. Lower carbon footprint.
34. What is a challenge for the widespread use of bamboo-based bioplastic
A. Market recognition. B. Production process.
C. Thermal stability. D. Technology innovation.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Bamboo: The Green Steel
B. Bamboo: Can it save our planet
C. Bamboo-based bioplastic: Is it really eco-friendly
D. Bamboo-based bioplastic: Strong Material, Greener Future

One day, when I was 7 years old, my father was standing in line to buy tickets for the circus for me.
And there was only one family in front of us. I was deeply impressed by them. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
I could sense that they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be the highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my hero.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say ” The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus Actually, we were not wealthy in any sense. So, I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
Seeing what had happened, father pulled his hand in his pocket.

The man thanked us with tears in his eyes.

【原文】Dear Mr. Reyes,
I’m writing in reply to your advertisement for volunteers to teach sports at a middle school in Tanzania. I’m interested in working at the school. I’m from Sweden and I’m training to be a primary school teacher in Switzerland. Before that, I was employed as a sports shop manager for ten years, but that was not my first job. After I graduated, I taught the staff in a health club about sports equipment. I later worked as a tennis coach at a local tennis club. I believe I have the right abilities for the job because I’m friendly, I like children, and I can work well in a team. In addition to tennis, I’m also good at basketball and swimming. I can speak fluent German, some French and a little Italian. I’d really like to do something useful with my life, and I also believe this will be a good opportunity to learn about other cultures and to gain more experience in teaching.
I’m available to attend an interview at any time.
Yours faithfully,
Stefanie Jucker

Seeing what had happened, father pulled his hand in his pocket. He searched for a short moment, then took out a neatly folded $50 bill. He stepped gently forward, pretending to just notice the bill fall, and said calmly, “Excuse me, sir, I think this slipped from your pocket.“ The man stared at the money first, then at my father, his eyes gradually widening as he realized what was happening, and his hands started to tremble a little.
The man thanked us with tears in his eyes. “This means the whole world to my kids because they’ve been looking forward to this circus for weeks,” he said, quickly wiping a tear from his cheek. My father patted his shoulder gently and smiled, ”Just make sure they have the best time tonight.“ As we left, I clearly heard the children’s excited screams when the tickets were handed to them, which warmed my heart a lot.
