I remember one day when we were travelling on a bus and I sat down while other people were standing. My mother shouted at me, “ 36 at once, you have young legs and you don’t need to sit down.” At the time, I felt embarrassed about being told of 37 , but now I understand. I think children nowadays have 38 that respect and it really makes me angry if I see children sitting down while 39 people are standing.
One area in which we had a lot of rules was table 40 . For example, we weren’t allowed to start our meal 41 the oldest person had started. We had to say “thank you” when our food was served, and eat everything on our plates before we could 42 the table. We couldn’t make any noise when eating. Worse than that, we were only allowed to have sweets at the weekend, as a special treat if we had been good.
Although my upbringing (养育) was perhaps a bit 43 compared with modern children, I’m very thankful to my parents for giving me a clear 44 in life. Even though I was sometimes punished, I think it has made me a better person. In my opinion, children need clear rules, but more than that, they need to learn 45 to get on with other people and realize they are not the centre of the world.

Mr Wang always tells us to keep our eyes on our own paper. It is a simple rule, but it’s not a rule everybody chooses to follow.
This morning, I had an experience with a “rule breaker” during an English exam. I felt somebody was watching me a little too closely. I turned my head quickly and saw James, who sat right behind me. My eyes caught his and he said in a low voice, “I hope you studied for this test!” I gave him a smile, not sure whether he was joking or not, and returned to my test. This time I leaned (倾身) a little more closely towards my paper. “I can’t see!” James said.
“What am I going to do ” I thought to myself. Cheating (作弊) was against my beliefs. I put my arm on my answers.
“He’s your friend, and what are friends for ”
“You know it’s wrong.”
I tapped (轻敲,轻拍) the top of my desk, hoping for an easy way out of this matter. No easy answer came. I just knew I had to do what I felt was right, even if it made James mad. So I guarded my paper so that he couldn’t see my answers.
When the exam ended, I stood there for a moment, searching for the right words to say to James. “Sorry, James, but you know me well enough to understand how I feel about cheating,” I said slowly and softly. “But maybe I could help you study before the next test.” “OK, Brian,” he smiled. “It might not be easy, but I’ll give it a try.” I felt happy that my friendship with James hadn’t been destroyed (破坏). As more and more people would like to travel on holiday, we hope everyone can show good manners during the trip.
Firstly, always wait in line patiently at stations or airports instead of pushing others. Secondly, avoid speaking loudly in public places to respect those around you. Thirdly, never draw on walls and remember to take your rubbish away and to put rubbish into dustbins. Besides, follow the rules strictly—if taking photos is not allowed, don’t do it. If everyone does these, I believe our trips will be more enjoyable and we’ll leave beautiful places to future generations.
