Once upon a time, a fisherman caught a golden fish in his net. The fish said, “Set me free, and I will grant you any wish.” The fisherman felt sorry for the fish, so he let it go without making a wish.
When the fisherman went home and told his wife about the fish, his wife was very angry. “You fool!” she shouted. “Go back and ask for a new pot—ours is broken!” The fisherman went to the sea, called the golden fish, and asked for a new pot. The fish granted his wish. But the wife wasn’t happy. “Go back! Ask for a big house!” she said. The fisherman did as she told, and they got a big house.
But the wife still wanted more. She asked to be a queen. The golden fish granted her wish, but she became very proud. One day, she said, “I want to be the ruler of the sea! Let the golden fish serve me!” The fisherman went to the sea. This time, the sea was dark and stormy. The golden fish didn’t appear. When the fisherman went home, he found his wife sitting in the old house with the broken pot.
The fisherman and his wife learned that greed brings nothing. They lived simply and happily ever after.
My favourite fairy tale is The Ugly Duckling. It was written by Hans Christian Andersen.
Once upon a time, there was a mother duck with six ducklings. Five were small and yellow, but the sixth was big and grey. Other ducklings laughed at him and called him “ugly”. The ugly duckling was sad and left home. He met many animals, but no one wanted to be his friend.
One day, he saw three beautiful swans. He wished he could look like them. When he looked into the water, he was surprised—he was a swan too!
I love this story because it tells us not to give up when others laugh at us. Everyone has their own beauty, and we should never judge others by their looks.
