Yi Houzhang is 77 years old this year. Since 1985, he has kept doing just one thing—planting trees day after day.
In 1985, to make his dream of greening the mountain near his home come true, Yi sold one cow and three pigs to buy young trees. His seven family members all worked with him, including his mother. It was difficult to plant these trees, and it was even more challenging to water them. They had to use a shoulder pole (扁担) to carry water up to the mountain.
After ten years of hard work, he planted over 130 hectares (公顷) of trees, but a wildfire in 1996 burned most of his trees, and only about 20 hectares of the trees remained alive. Yi quickly restarted his work with his family. For months, they lived on the mountains so that they would have more time to plant trees.
The fire taught Yi a lesson. He visited many places to learn about fire control. Later he changed the kinds of trees and built fire paths. Now, the mountain is covered with trees, and Yi has a tea garden which spreads over almost 5 hectares. He can make about 50,000 yuan a year from the garden.
Though Yi’s body is growing weaker and weaker as he gets older, he goes on working with the help of his children. “When I’m unable to work, I’ll be succeeded by my children,” Yi Houzhang said.
1.How long has Yi Houzhang kept planting trees
2.What was Yi Houzhang’s dream
3.How did Yi and his family members water the trees
4.What did Yi do to control the fire
5.What do you think of Yi Houzhang
How much pocket money do you get from your parents every month What do you often do with your money
We asked three British middle school students for their opinions on pocket money.
Ruth Sawyers:
I get 5 pounds every week from my parents. I usually save 1.5 pounds and spend the rest. The two things I usually like to buy with my pocket money are story books and blocks (积木). I don’t really think about getting more pocket money. And I even don’t talk about pocket money with my friends at school. If some people’s parents give them too much pocket money, other children might get jealous (嫉妒的). It’s important not to show off what you’ve got.
Maya Varsani:
I get 6 pounds from my mum and 8 pounds from my dad every month. I try to save and buy presents for my family. Last year, I bought my mum a lipstick (口红) for Mother’s Day, which cost 9.5 pounds.
Jimmy Segalow:
My mum gives me 10 pounds a week. She says I can either spend it in the school canteen (餐厅) or she will make me a packed lunch, then I can spend the 10 pounds on whatever I want.
I like trainers (运动鞋). If they cost 50 pounds and I only have 40 pounds, my mum might give me an extra (额外的) 10 pounds. But I have to do some housework instead.
I know that some parents can’t afford to give their children much pocket money. So I try not to talk about my pocket money at school.

Every afternoon after school, Grandma Li sits by the window in her small house in a village in Shandong. She takes out a piece of red paper and her special scissors. In just a few minutes, she can turn the paper into a beautiful flower, a lively fish, or the Chinese character “福” (meaning good fortune). This is the art of Chinese paper cutting, a tradition that has been passed down in her family for generations.
Paper cutting requires great patience and skill. The paper, usually bright red which symbolizes luck and happiness in Chinese culture, is folded several times. Then, with quick and precise cuts, Grandma Li creates amazing patterns. Some are simple, and some are very complex, telling stories from ancient times.
However, this traditional art is facing challenges. Fewer young people are willing to learn it because it takes a long time to master and doesn’t earn much money. Machines can now produce paper-cuts quickly and cheaply. But Grandma Li doesn’t mind. She still holds free classes every weekend for the children in the village. “I want them to know and feel the beauty made by hands,” she says with a warm smile. For her, keeping this art alive is more important than money.
11.What is the red paper usually used for paper cutting according to the passage
12.Does Grandma Li teach children for free
13.Where does Grandma Li hold her free classes
14.Why are fewer young people willing to learn paper cutting now

About 2,300 years ago, the Minjiang River flooded (淹没) the towns around Chengdu every spring. The emperor of Qin Dynasty asked the governor (太守), Li Bing, who was a skilled water engineer, to solve this problem.
The common way to stop floods was to build a wall across the river, called a dam (堤). However, the emperor also needed ships to use the river to send food to his army. This meant a dam could not be built. Li Bing had to find another way. After careful study, he created a wonderful plan-a plan that still works today!
With the help of his son and tens of thousands of workers, Li Bing built a man-made island in the middle of the river. This island, shaped like a fish, divided the river into two parts: an inner river and an outer river. The inner river was deeper but narrower (更窄). It took four years to complete!
Li Bing also decided to cut a channel (渠道) through Mount Yulei. This channel would stop the farmland from being flooded and take water to irrigate (灌溉) the crops. The mountain rock was very hard. His workers worked on it by first heating the rock with fire and then cooling it with water quickly. This made the rock crack and break, so it could be moved away more easily. This difficult task took eight years.
After Li Bing’s project was finished, the floods were stopped. The river flowed (流动) naturally, and because there was no dam, ships and fish could pass freely. Dujiangyan irrigation system helped farmers grow much more food, making Sichuan the most productive area in China.
Even today, Li Bing’s great work lives on and is seen as a wonderful example of ancient engineering.

The Story of Wang Xiang Lying on Ice to Catch Carp
In ancient China, there was a famous story about filial piety (孝顺) called “Wang Xiang Lying on Ice to Catch Carp”. It is one of the most well-known stories from The Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars (《二十四孝》), a book that records true stories of children showing respect and love to their parents.
Wang Xiang lived during the Three Kingdoms period. His mother died when he was very young. Later, his father married a new wife, who was not kind to him. She often treated him badly and spoke ill of him to his father. Even so, Wang Xiang never complained. He always obeyed his stepmother and tried his best to make her happy.
One cold winter, his stepmother suddenly fell ill. She felt very weak and wanted to eat fresh carp soup badly. But the weather was extremely cold. The river was completely covered with thick ice. There was no way to catch any carp. Wang Xiang was very worried about his stepmother’s health. He thought hard and finally had an idea.
He ran to the river, took off his coat and lay down on the cold ice. The ice was freezing, and his body felt like it was in a snowstorm. But he didn’t care about the cold. He kept lying there, hoping his body heat could melt (融化) the ice. After a while, the ice under him slowly melted. To his surprise, two lively carps jumped out of the water. He quickly caught them and ran home to make soup for his stepmother.
When his stepmother drank the soup, she was deeply moved. From then on, she changed her attitude (态度) towards Wang Xiang and treated him like her own son.

Because of his excellent performance, Hao Yongquan was chosen as Gansu’s most beautiful forest ranger (护林员) in December.
Hao has been a forest ranger for 38 years since he stopped serving in the army. He and his workmates at Guanyin Forest Farm are called the “forest’s eyes”.
“Everyday work usually starts with patrolling (巡逻). Every morning, we carry the necessary tools after having breakfast and then set off to forests with dry food and water, patrolling until it gets dark,” Hao said.
Rangers have been living in the mountains and forests for years, getting used to difficulties and loneliness. They always go out early and return in the evening during the whole year, and their duty (职责) is to protect green mountains and clear waters.
A forest ranger often has to walk more than 12 kilometers a day, and a pair of shoes wears out in two to three months, according to Hao.
Hao Yongquan works at Liuping Forest Management Office. It manages 10,511.6 hectares (公顷).
“Because of poor road conditions, if rangers go to the farthest villages for patrols, they have to walk 30 to 40 kilometers on mountain roads, climb four mountains, and cross more than 10 rivers,” Hao said. “And each patrol takes three to four days.”
When Hao returns from his patrol every day, he writes down the results in the patrol diary, recording his love for mountains and forests. Hao is proud of his work because it helps protect nature. “The environment is improving day by day, and that makes me feel my work is meaningful,” he said.

In a classroom in any countries, the teacher teaches more than art or history or language. He or she teaches something behind the culture of the country. There are different educational ideas in different cultures.
In a country such as the United States, people with different history, culture and language join together and they pay much attention to personal ideas. Teachers try to make each student special. Students needn’t remember a lot of things, instead, they do their best to find answers on their own. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to have their own ideas. Their education encourages personal thoughts.
In most Asian countries, most people have the same language, history and culture. For this reason, the education there pays more attention to group goals (目标) than personal ideas. 中国和日本的孩子们经常一起合作,互相帮助。In the classroom, the ways of teaching are often very traditional. The teacher says, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules or information that they have been taught in order to keep them in mind.
In many ways, these differences come from educational ideas. In Western countries, teachers are taught to help students to learn. They make it easier for the students to learn by themselves. In some Asian countries, however, teachers often feel that their job is to pass knowledge to students.

In ancient China, people often gave willow branches (柳枝) to friends or family who were going to leave. Do you know why willow branches mean saying goodbye
One reason is that willows are full of energy. They can grow in any soil, wet or dry, in the north or the south. Willow branch meant the leaving ones could easily get used to their new living environment. Another reason is that in Chinese, the pronunciation of “柳” (willow) is similar to “留” (stay). This was a way to say, “I hope you can stay a little longer.”
In the Han Dynasty, people had a special way to say goodbye. When friends or family left the city, they met at Baqiao in Chang’an (now Xi’an). The person staying gave the traveler a willow branch as a gift.
And in the Tang Dynasty, people still said goodbye at Baqiao, but also at places like Qujiang Pool and the Wei River. They often tied silk ribbons to it or wrote poems on small cards and attached them. This made the farewell (离别) more beautiful and creative. This custom became very popular and was widely mentioned in ancient Chinese poetry. It’s Friday evening. My daughters, 3 and 9, become unhappy when I gently take the iPads away from their hands. One by one, the two pads are turned off. We light the candles and sit down to have a big meal.
We call it our “Technology Shabbat(科技安息日)” which lasts from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. Now most friends know they will not be able to get in touch with us by using computers or mobile phones from 6pm on Friday to 6pm on Saturday.
I first understood the importance of “Technology Shabbat” in 2008, when my father had got brain cancer(癌症). Some days he wouldn’t feel good, and the only thing I wanted to do was to be with him. When I was with him, I turned off my mobile phone.
Soon after, encouraged by National Day of Unplugging(全国断网断电日) on March 1st, my husband and I decided to be away from the mobile phones for one full day every week.
During our “Technology Shabbat”, time slows down. Our Saturdays now feel like mini-vacations. We drive cars or ride bikes. We, with our kids, walk in the garden, play board games and cook meals. I feel like a better mother, wife and person.
The technology we have created makes it possible for us to share knowledge and search for information we need. But the technology also takes something away from us. When we put down our phones, we stop staying up late surfing, messaging, or clicking. Instead, we not only rest well but also communicate with my family well.
When we rush into the time full of high technology, it’s necessary for us to pay attention to what we are doing online and when we should go offline.
I will always remember the most important thing in my family: “Technology Shabbat”.

Everyone sometimes has disagreements with friends or family members. For example, you might not agree about what game to play, which restaurant makes the best pizza. Sometimes you may disagree with your friends about more serious subjects.
Disagreements are uncomfortable. There are some steps you can take to make the conversation meaningful. Here is how to talk to people you disagree with.
See their attitude
Even if you disagree with someone, you can still listen to what they say. Let them know that you’re paying attention to them by listening carefully with interest. Another way to show that you’re listening is by asking questions or repeating what they said. You can start by saying, “OK. I understand you. You are saying...”
Use polite language
When someone has an opinion you don’t agree with, don’t pay too much attention to it. Avoid using impolite adjectives, like “stupid” “foolish” or “silly”.
Instead, focus on speaking calmly (沉着地). For example, you may begin with “I feel” or “I see this in another way”.
Stick to the facts
If you have a strong opinion, it’s better to stick to the facts instead of feelings. Start by asking if you can share your opinion. Then relax your shoulders and speak in a calm voice. (3)If you are stopped by some person, you can remind the person that it’s your turn to speak. Then give him another chance to speak later.
Find common ground
If you find that you can’t change the other person’s mind, and they may not change yours. Still, look for the points you agree on. (4)You may also get a better understanding of each other’s opinion. In the end, it’s worth the effort because healthy communication builds strong relationships and communities.
