Yi Houzhang is 77 years old this year. Since 1985, he has kept doing just one thing—planting trees day after day.
In 1985, to make his dream of greening the mountain near his home come true, Yi sold one cow and three pigs to buy young trees. His seven family members all worked with him, including his mother. It was difficult to plant these trees, and it was even more challenging to water them. They had to use a shoulder pole (扁担) to carry water up to the mountain.
After ten years of hard work, he planted over 130 hectares (公顷) of trees, but a wildfire in 1996 burned most of his trees, and only about 20 hectares of the trees remained alive. Yi quickly restarted his work with his family. For months, they lived on the mountains so that they would have more time to plant trees.
The fire taught Yi a lesson. He visited many places to learn about fire control. Later he changed the kinds of trees and built fire paths. Now, the mountain is covered with trees, and Yi has a tea garden which spreads over almost 5 hectares. He can make about 50,000 yuan a year from the garden.
Though Yi’s body is growing weaker and weaker as he gets older, he goes on working with the help of his children. “When I’m unable to work, I’ll be succeeded by my children,” Yi Houzhang said.
1.How long has Yi Houzhang kept planting trees
2.What was Yi Houzhang’s dream
3.How did Yi and his family members water the trees
4.What did Yi do to control the fire
5.What do you think of Yi Houzhang

If you want to write a good article, you might want to listen to what Nobel Prize-winning (诺贝尔奖获得者) writers say about writing. Here is some advice from them.
Show more, talk less
In 1993, Toni Morrison became the first black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (文学). “My favourite part of my work is that I can show more with fewer words. There is no need to describe every detail. I’d like to depend more on readers’ own emotions (情感) and intelligence,” she said.
Write regularly
Vargas Llosa won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Vargas Llosa said that instead of waiting for good ideas before you start writing, you should just make yourself write regularly. Doing so will help you come up with these ideas.
“If I just wait for good ideas, I will never finish a book. My good ideas come from years of hard work,” he said.
Use a pen and paper
Kazuo Ishiguro won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Ishiguro said, “I write my first drafts (初稿) with a pen and paper instead of using a computer.”
“When I write my first draft, I don’t worry about the style. Instead, I just try to get all my ideas down on paper,” Ishiguro also said.
“Then I plan the whole thing out from that. I number the parts and move them around. By the time I write my next draft, I have a clearer idea of where I’m going,” he explained.
Reading makes a full man and writing makes an exact man. So try the ways above to improve your writing.
6.How many suggestions are mentioned in the passage (no more than 1 word)
7.Where do Vargas Llosa’s good ideas come from (no more than 7 words)

About 2,300 years ago, the Minjiang River flooded (淹没) the towns around Chengdu every spring. The emperor of Qin Dynasty asked the governor (太守), Li Bing, who was a skilled water engineer, to solve this problem.
The common way to stop floods was to build a wall across the river, called a dam (堤). However, the emperor also needed ships to use the river to send food to his army. This meant a dam could not be built. Li Bing had to find another way. After careful study, he created a wonderful plan-a plan that still works today!
With the help of his son and tens of thousands of workers, Li Bing built a man-made island in the middle of the river. This island, shaped like a fish, divided the river into two parts: an inner river and an outer river. The inner river was deeper but narrower (更窄). It took four years to complete!
Li Bing also decided to cut a channel (渠道) through Mount Yulei. This channel would stop the farmland from being flooded and take water to irrigate (灌溉) the crops. The mountain rock was very hard. His workers worked on it by first heating the rock with fire and then cooling it with water quickly. This made the rock crack and break, so it could be moved away more easily. This difficult task took eight years.
After Li Bing’s project was finished, the floods were stopped. The river flowed (流动) naturally, and because there was no dam, ships and fish could pass freely. Dujiangyan irrigation system helped farmers grow much more food, making Sichuan the most productive area in China.
Even today, Li Bing’s great work lives on and is seen as a wonderful example of ancient engineering.

Have you ever heard of e-waste (electronic waste) , which can be produced every day Old computers, MP4 players and mobile phones can become e-waste. How do you deal with them when they’re broken or you want a new one
Most people just throw them away. With the development of electronic industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to a survey by the United Nations in 2024, people around the world produced 62 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 13.8 million tons. China was the biggest waster, producing 14 million tons. The U.S. came second, with 7.5 million tons.
It’s important to pay attention to e- waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban (城市的) mine. Why The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic chemicals (有毒化学物质) can get into the earth or air, influencing the environment and people’s health.
Apple, for example, now recycles people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce e-waste, we can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs.

Imagine a group of people are talking about something happily. But there is one man who cannot follow them, because he has a hearing problem. How can we help such a person
Now a new and exciting invention called AR glasses has come out. It allows deaf people to hear conversations in real time. Deaf people are also able to join in everyday conversations by wearing AR glasses.
The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he spent Christmas dinner with his family. His 97-year-old grandfather had a hearing problem. Scarfe saw him sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. And the old man always watched TV shows with subtitles (字幕). That situation was kept in Scarfe’s mind. Suddenly he realized that maybe the AR glasses could help.
So Scarfe started to work with Nreal, a company good at making AR glasses. Six months later, a new pair of AR glasses came out. The glasses have a microphone that receives the audio (音频) from the environment and sends it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that audio and these subtitles then appear on the screen of the user’s glasses.
The company first tested the glasses in the UK. There are over 13 million adults with hearing loss. When the product works, it will change the lives of 430 million people.
This is a great change for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, a user of the AR glasses, says, “As a deaf person myself, I am amazed by this new technology. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation. That has never happened before.”

37.What tools must a deaf person have if he wants to join in a conversation
38.Why did the company first test the AR glasses in the UK

At Shanghai Hongkou Library, there is a guestbook where readers can write their thoughts. Some people say the air conditioning is too cold. Others mention noisy children in the reading room. Some talk about the water quality or lack of toilet paper.
What’s special is that every message gets a reply from the library staff. A blogger shared this online and called it “Doraemon’s message book”. The video quickly got thousands of likes and comments.
People love it because the library listens. It shows that good public service isn’t just about money or big plans—it’s about caring about people.
The library moved the guestbook from the front desk to a quiet corner. This way, readers can write freely without feeling watched.
The staff check the book regularly. When someone writes a message, they send it to the right department and write back.
Some ideas are used right away. For example, a reader suggested adding chairs in the eating area, and the library did it. When they can’t do anything, they explain why. For example, they won’t add a microwave because it’s not safe.
This simple guestbook shows the warmth of the city. It proves that what really matters is whether people feel seen and heard.

It’s very important for us to learn about protecting the environment around us. Here is a 4R rule for us:
▲Recycle. Bottles, waste paper, glass, plastic and so on can easily be recycled. By doing so, we can save lots of time and money. For example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat (压平) and melted (熔化), and the melted things are made for new coke cans.
▲Reduce. Millions of trees are being cut down to make paper. If everyone uses a little paper carelessly and throws it out, soon we would not have any trees left. We should use both sides of paper. Reduce the use of boxes and cups which can be used only once. Other things are also being wasted and people don’t know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary for us to reduce the waste.
▲Reuse. We should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them out. Give our clothes we do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor. Within a family, we may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.
▲Repair. If one of the legs of our table is broken, we can repair it instead of throwing it away. If we want to change for better ones, it is better for us to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after doing some repairing.
In a word, the more we do, the better our environment will be.

As we all know, many inventions have changed the world. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made a great invention—the telephone. For the first time in history, people could talk to someone far away just like they were in the same room. But today, phones can do much more than just making calls!
The story of mobile phones began with two-way radios. These early devices (设备) had a big problem—they only worked when people were close to each other. In the 1940s, smart scientists found a way. They built tall radio towers across the country to pass signals (信号) easily.
Everything changed in 1973 when Dr. Martin Cooper made the first real mobile phone call. During the 1980s, mobile phones became smaller but were still very expensive. Only rich business people could afford them, and the phones looked like big plastic bricks.
The 1990s brought another big change. Phones became cheaper and smaller, fitting easily in pockets. Soon, almost everyone had one. Text messaging became popular.
Now we have smartphones—like powerful mini-computers in our pockets. We use them to take photos, watch videos, play games, and even help with housework! Messaging apps let us send videos and long messages easily. While phones help us stay connected, some people worry we spend too much time on them.
Looking back, it’s amazing how phones have changed. From Bell’s simple telephone to today’s smartphones, this has truly changed our lives. Who knows what the next great invention will be Only time will tell!
56.When did Alexander Graham Bell invent the telephone
57.Why did scientists build tall radio towers in the 1940s

Hello, I’m Adam Smith. Do you know that many people are trying to learn a new language these days Some of them consider it as a hobby, while others have to learn a new language because it is needed by their jobs or study. As a foreigner who is really interested in Chinese culture, I like learning Chinese. It is thought that a person needs to know at least 3,000 Chinese characters (汉字) to understand most Chinese newspapers. The problem for most foreigners, however, is that knowing 3,000 characters sounds like an impossible task. For foreigners, many Chinese characters look the same. That’s why some people give up halfway. It’s the most difficult part for me, too. But I am able to learn how to write each character by watching videos online. Whenever I saw a character I didn’t know in the street or on a menu, I would write it down and then look it up. Slowly I’ve learnt the characters that are common in daily life. As for speaking, I talk about different topics in Chinese in my daily life. It is the secret to practising speaking and helps me to think in a Chinese way. For example, whenever I am going to a shop, I would think about how to say things in Chinese. Learning a second language is never easy. But I believe that if I try my best, I can achieve my goal.
60.Why does Adam learn Chinese
61.How many Chinese characters does a person need to know to understand most Chinese newspapers
62.How does Adam learn to write Chinese characters
63.What is Adam’s secret to practising speaking

China’s “four great new inventions” in modern times have made the daily life of the public more and more convenient. They are the high-speed railway (HSR), shopping online, shared bikes and mobile phone payment.
Living in Hong Kong, I knew them from the papers, the TV and the Internet. But last month I had the chance to experience all of them.
As usual, the golden week stopped the traffic. It was hard to get a railway ticket anywhere in the train stations. But I bought a train ticket to Beijing on the Internet and paid for it through Zhifubao. It was even cheaper than it was bought in the station. Then we got on the high-speed train. I was shocked at its speed and quietness. There was no noise which the train made while running. It was reported that China has the longest high-speed railway in the world, which is regarded as a “name card” for China.
Did I feel bored during the trip on the train Not at all. I bought many cheap and good things in Taobao and Tmall on the Internet through my mobile phone. It’s amazing that there are oceans of products in Taobao and Tmall.
Soon we arrived in Beijing. We got on a bus near the train station. After getting off the bus, my friend told me that the bus stop is far from his home. I thought we would have to spend much money going to his home on a taxi, but it seemed that he wasn’t worried about that. He showed me some bikes on the side of the street. They are called shared bikes. We only need to use our mobile phones to scan the Quick-Response code (二维码) on shared bikes, and then we could ride the bikes anywhere we wanted to go. It was so cool

A Frenchman, Niepce, needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera in 1826. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.
The next important date in the history of photography (摄影技术) was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera, in a different way, in his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing.
In 1840, photography was developed once more. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. But the photographers had to carry many machines.
With the development of science and technology, a Chinese young man, Wang Mengqiu, invented Hover Camera (无人机). It can record people and things more wonderfully. He once studied at Stanford University in the United States. He became famous overnight because of the invention.
Hover Camera records movements with a 13MP camera and takes 4K videos. You can use a smart phone to control it. It can follow you, flying or staying in mid-air. A long time ago, people travelled by carriages (四轮马车). In 1886, a German engineer named Karl Benz made the first real car. That was the start of a big change in how we get around.
In 1908, Henry Ford created the Model T. He used an assembly line (装配线) — workers each did one small job to build the car quickly. This made cars cheaper, so more families could buy them.
Over time, car technology improved greatly. Early cars focused on speed, but later engineers created hybrid (混合动力车) and electric cars. These cars are greener because they use less energy and create less pollution, which is good for the environment.
Modern cars are smart. They have GPS, blue-tooth and internet connections. After self-driving cars appear, you can just sit back and let the car take you everywhere.
While our cars have come a long way, there are still challenges to solve. Electric cars need to be greener, and self-driving cars require improved roads and better laws. Future cars will be greener, safer and smarter, continuing to change how we travel.
91.Who invented the first real car
92.How did Henry Ford make cars cheaper for more families
93.What will future cars be like
94.What’s your favorite invention except cars Why (more than 30 words)

Today, food delivery is an important part of our daily lives. But did you know it started a long time ago Expert Hou Yinguo says dining services like today’ food delivery began during the Han Dynasty (206 BC—AD 220). But the term “food delivery” was first used in the Song Dynasty (960—1279). At first, food delivery was a special service for important people. But later, it became popular among everyone.
In the Song Dynasty, China’s food takeout business reached a golden age. The book A Dream of Splendor says that there was a lot of food in Bianjing (today’s Kaifeng in Henan). People often bought ready-made meals from local shops instead of cooking. Without phones, ordering was harder than today. They had to visit a restaurant in person or send someone to make the order, then tell the restaurant when and where they needed the food and the restaurant would bring it to them. The delivery person was called xianhan (闲汉).
People wanted their delivered food to be warm and tasty. They didn’t have our modern technology, but they were very clever! In the Song Dynasty they had a special dish called wenpan (温盘). It was like two plates put together with space in the middle. They would pour hot water into that space to keep the food on top warm.

96.Why did China’s food takeout business reach a golden age in the Song Dynasty
