A father told his son that he should not accept the Theory of Evolution just because he learned about it in Biology class at school. He went on to say that he is teaching his son to think critically. But he isn't.
Many people assume that critical thinking refers to questioning and criticizing in the more negative sense of the word.If they are rejecting what they are told by experts, they falsely believe that they are thinking critically. This is not uncommon. Many people claim that everything is just someone's opinion and no one is actually right or wrong. They believe they are thinking critically when they're actually doing the very opposite.
There are many definitions of critical thinking. To put simply,it refers to identifying and evaluating arguments, finding inconsistencies in arguments, problem solving, and thinking about our own beliefs and why we hold them.
Diane Halpern, author of Thought &Knowledge, uses this definition:“Critical thinkers are able to change their mind or the conclusion that they reached, when new information warrants such a change.”
A closed-minded person responds negatively when presented with new ideas that challenge their existing beliefs. These are the people who insist that even an expert's opinion is no better than anyone else's.In contrast,an open-minded person suspends judgment. They seek out more information, including information that goes against beliefs they currently hold. They review the evidence that's available and are always open to new ways of thinking. They consider all options and insist on finding a solution.
So you need to ask questions and be open-minded about the answers. You need to know how to do research and look for reliable sources. You have to think about your own thinking and question why you hold the beliefs you do.Be aware of the pre-set ideas you bring to the argument, and learn to evaluate evidence.
1.Why does the author mention the father-son example in paragraph 1?
( )
A.To promote the practice of critical thinking.
B.To criticize the current education system.
C.To present a widespread misconception.
D.To introduce an innovative idea.
C
2.What does the underlined word “warrants” in paragraph 4 mean?
( )
A.Justifies. B.Matches.
C.Transforms. D.Identifies.
A
3.How are open-minded people different from the closed-minded?
( )
A.They respect expert authority.
B.They internalize their own beliefs.
C.They keep an option-solution balance.
D.They resist the urge to judge prematurely.
D
4.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?( )
A.How to evaluate evidence.
B.The process of critical thinking.
C.How to become a critical thinker.
D.The benefits of being open-minded.

If you're digitally skilled, it has likely been a while since you spent much time writing by hand. The laborious process of tracing out our thoughts, letter by letter, on the page is becoming a thing of the past in our screen-dominated world, where text messages and thumb-typed grocery lists have replaced handwritten letters and sticky notes. To keep up, many schools are introducing computers as early as preschool, meaning some kids may learn the basics of typing before writing by hand. Although electronic keyboards offer obvious efficiency benefits, giving up handwriting may come at a significant cost.
Typing pays no attention to the form of the letters—only involving relatively simple and uniform movements. By contrast, handwriting is a complex task. Motor system has to delicately adjust the pressure that each finger applies on the pen to recreate each letter. Adding to the complexity, your visual system must continuously process that letter as it's formed, with your brain making adjustments to fingers in real time to create the letters' shapes. “This process lets you make your body and what you are seeing mesh,” says Robert Wiley, a cognitive psychologist at the University of North Carolina, adding “such complexity is crucial to mental development.”
Screens and keyboards replacing pen and paper might affect kids' ability to learn letters, which is actually an important predictor of later reading and math attainment. If young children are not receiving any handwriting training, their brains simply won't reach their full potential. For adults, typing often results in failing to actually process information. During a lecture, it's possible to type what they're hearing word for word. But often, they're just typing blindly, failing to make information their own. On the other hand, taking notes by hand forces them to write only key words and use drawings or arrows to work through ideas.
Actually, we don't have to drop digital tools, like graphics tablets and smart pens, to capitalize on the power of handwriting. Recent research suggests that writing on a screen activates the same brain pathways as writing on paper. It's the movement that counts, not its final form.

Whoever says fast food is unhealthy for the body and the environment hasn't been introduced to Sweetgreen, a chain restaurant committed to changing how we view food production, consumption and waste.
In short, Sweetgreen represents a new era of fast food—one that focuses on healthy ingredients (原料) and local community. It began on August 1,2007 when three recent college graduates launched the flagship location in Washington D.C.Tired of having to choose between slow but healthy food options and food that was fast but unhealthy, they made a commitment to offering quality and convenient food as a better option.
Every step along the 16-year journey has been focused on one central principle. The company explains in its mission statement, “Our core values guide our actions and we aim to empower our customers, team members and partners to be a positive force on the food system. That's why we're building a transparent (透明的) supply network.” Therefore, transparency is at the very foundation of the company.
At the top of the list of items customers can expect is fresh ingredients that are locally sourced and organic whenever possible. Even with that goal in mind, the words “organic” and “local” were recently removed from the menu in an effort to honor full transparency in instances where ingredients may have traveled further or come from a farm not officially recognized as organic. To provide localized information, Sweetgreen restaurants post a source board. Online, customers can see specials that highlight local fare, such as Lobster Roll Salad in Boston, Garlic Chili Shrimp Bowl in Houston and Citrus Shrimp and Avocado in Miami.
In order to protect the environment, Sweetgreen focuses on selecting foods that are regionally sourced and sustainably grown. The company also looks for agricultural operations that rely on regenerative farming practices that benefit the environment and Sweetgreen customers. By cooperating with local farmers who prioritize water conservation, the use of renewable energy and organic methods, etc., Sweetgreen calculates a 50% reduction in the footprint that comes from previous suppliers.
“At Sweetgreen, we have a saying: the choices we make about what we eat, where it comes from, and how it's prepared have a direct and powerful impact on the health of individuals, communities and the environment. Today, with the future of the planet at risk, these words have never rang more true,” said the company.

Much of the methane (甲烷) in air comes from human activities. But methane has natural sources too. Microbes (微生物) in wetland soils and trees also release methane.
Vincent Gauci, an environmental scientist, knew the trees in wet places, like the tropics, give off methane from their trunks. Then, he wanted to study its release from trees in drier soils. “We were surprised to see the exact opposite,” says Gauci. The trees were actually taking in methane.
Trees taking in and releasing gases is gas exchange. Researchers typically measure methane exchange low on the trunk, near the ground. But Gauci's team measured higher up on the tree, thinking this would better estimate how much methane the whole tree might send out.
Gauci's two students measured methane release from trees in the UK and Panama, setting up a gas-exchange chamber on a tree to monitor how much methane it's absorbing or sending out. They expected methane emissions would drop as they measured higher up the trunk. Their guess at first seemed to hold. Higher up the trunk, methane release dipped. But at chest height, the numbers dropped below zero—here, trees were absorbing methane.
To further check their findings, the team analyzed trees from four regions—Brazil, Sweden, Panama and the UK. The result was the same at all sites. Overall, the trees took up more methane than they released. Using data from the four sites, the team estimated all the world's forests may be absorbing 50 million tons of methane every year.
The scientists believe methane is taken in by microbes that live in tree bark. On average, trees absorbed more methane than they released, with faster uptake in warmer climates.
Gauci says,“People release far more methane than what nature can remove. So we have to cut back on fossil fuels. Trees are even more important for climate than we thought. We must be aware of the need for immediate action to safeguard this vital natural resource.”

What do you do as spring sets in Taking off your warm winter coat, and putting it away For humans, taking off winter coats is a one-minute task. As it turns out, not all animals are so capable.
Snowshoe rabbits live in the mountain ranges of North America, and have a pure white coat during the winter time to match the snowy surroundings and to help avoid being caught. And they take off winter coats for a darker brown fur color to match the dirt and leaves after the snow melts in the spring. Sounds like a great way to escape from their natural enemies, right However, concern begins when scientists begin looking at how the warming climate will impact the rabbits.
There are more and more white rabbits in the middle of a brown habitat, where the snow has already melted away. This is a problem for them, as they are more easily seen by their natural enemies, giving them a “mismatch” problem. Snowshoe rabbits time the coat change in spring from white to brown based on the change in day length, not the temperature or the presence of snow in their habitat. Nowadays, the snow is melting a week on average before the change in day length signals the change in coat color, leaving the rabbits exposed to their natural enemies.
Some predictions put the rabbits in up to 8 weeks of a white coat in a brown, snowless habitat by the end of this century. This timeline could spell doom for their populations, as their natural enemies will have nearly 2 months of easily spotting them.
Fortunately, scientists have found areas with snowshoe rabbits in color from white to brown in the same place, meaning the timing of the coat change can be influenced by the environment. Snowshoe rabbits reproduce quickly, and if the color change timing is passed down then it is possible for rabbits to change coats accordingly. By protecting areas with variable ones, we can give snowshoe rabbits the opportunity to adapt to the changing climate.

This might sound impossibly old-fashioned,but I still like the idea that education is about learning:facts, skills, culture, analysis, inspiration. It's supposed to make us better citizens. But over the last decade, the goal of learning has given way to grades and degrees. The unfortunate result has been inflation (膨胀) of both. They rise ever higher; learning doesn't.
To avoid discouraging students, some school districts did away with D and F grades.Grade-point averages have consistently risen even though scores on nationwide standardized exams such as SAT have not. It's not that I think standardized tests are the final word in measuring excellence. But when the gaps between grades and test scores are this wide and consistent, parents and the public should not be fooled.
That's true not just of low-achieving students. In a 2023 survey, educators said that close to half of students argue for higher grades than they earn, and 8 of 10 teachers give in.It's hard to blame them:A third or more of students and parents disturb them when they don't.
Unearned grades are damaging in many ways. Some students, armed with good grades, march off to college to find themselves in remedial (补习的) classes because they haven't learned enough to take college-level courses.Employers complain that high school and even college graduates lack basic skills needed in the workforce. There are also complaints from college professors that the students aren't even good at reading books.
Grade inflation has followed students into college. Some professors hesitate to grade accurately because of student evaluations, which are often more negative for tough graders.Remember that about 70% of college instructors are adjunct (兼职) professors who have few job protections. Many Ivy League students have learned to cherry-pick easy-grading professors.Yet a Brown University study found that students taking courses from professors with stricter grading standards learned more.We have to ask ourselves as a society: Do we want college to be a place of intellectual growth or a performative exercise in grade fishing
5.What are parents fooled into thinking?( )
A.SAT is the best measure of their children's abilities.
B.The purpose of education is to make better citizens.
C.Grade-point averages are vital for college application.
D.Children's high grades reflect their exceptional abilities.
文章第二段结尾指出“But when the gaps between grades and test scores are this wide and consistent, parents and the public should not be fooled.”,这说明家长们现在是被误导认为高分反映了学生的实际能力,故选D。
D
6.What is a consequence of grade inflation?( )
A.Employers favor students with higher degrees.
B.Graduates fall short of employers' expectations.
C.Remedial classes become required courses in college.
D.Low-achieving students find it harder to enter college.
B
7.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?( )
A.Tough graders desire job security.
B.Strict grading promotes real learning.
C.Student evaluations fuel intellectual growth.
D.Easy-grading professors start grade inflation.
B
8.What is the best title of the text?( )
A.The Game of Scores
B.Today,Grade A Is for Average
C.The Force Behind Grade Inflation
D.Now,Learning Takes the Front Seat

The brown paper bag hit the ground. A Michelin engineer picked it up and opened it, revealing a cracked, leaking egg. The third graders at A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School were disappointed when they saw the runny mess.
It was engineering week at A.J. Whittenberg, a public primary school in Greenville, South Carolina. One week per month, engineers from local industries visit the classrooms and talk to students about their careers.
Greenville is now introducing the idea of a career path to students in primary schools and giving students the option to follow those programs to middle and high schools. Each primary school focuses on a specific technical skill. The district allows students to attend schools outside of their attendance boundaries as long as space is available, which means students can choose to continue to follow their chosen career pathway at a middle school with corresponding programs.
The effort in Greenville is part of a growing national trend in which school districts partner with local industries to develop curriculum (课程) and expose students to specialized careers at a young age.
Some education experts worry the focus on industry qualifications has resulted in schools taking on responsibilities that should fall to businesses, like training workers for specific job duties, damaging a more comprehensive education in schools. “Schools are to not just prepare people for work and strengthen the economy, but also a place where students should experience art, music and think creatively,” said Jack Schneider, a professor of education at the University of Massachusetts.
A teacher from Greenville, however, said, “Career exposure has a big impact on kids. We're not really wanting them to make a decision—‘I'm in the second grade and now I'm locked in to being whatever when I graduate from high school in 10 years.’ We just hope students walk across the graduation stage with plans for a career in mind.”
Modern times need modern solutions. When students leave school, they need to be already down their road to college, if that's what they're going to do, or schools need to give them something that allows them to get to work and earn a living. Just getting out with a high school degree doesn't do that.

Cutting carbon emissions(排放)is not enough to keep global warming to less than 1.5 ℃—the goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Not anymore, at least. As a result, hundreds of start-ups trying to remove greenhouse gases from the air and water have sprung up within the past few years. While land-based carbon dioxide removal projects have been undergoing testing and development for decades, ocean-based carbon removal is more recent in the push to fight against climate change. And one of the leaders in that field—Equatic—is about to increase its efforts in a big way.
What began three years ago as a US Department of Energy-funded research project out of the University of California Los Angeles has already grown into a pair of pilot projects in Los Angeles and Singapore. And now, the company has its sights set on building a massive marine carbon capture (海洋碳捕获) facility in Quebec.
The process for capturing carbon begins by pumping seawater into a tank and then using an electrical current to break down the water into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2) gases and a solution, which is then reacted with the air, pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and chemically transforming it into two byproducts. One, calcium carbonate, is a white powder. The other is a solution that gets released back into the ocean.
The proposed Quebec plant differs significantly from Equatic's existing facilities. Its Singaporean pilot facility can process 4,000 tonnes of carbon each year. The planned Quebec facility, meanwhile, will be capable of processing 110,000 tonnes annually—about as much carbon as is emitted by 24,000 cars.
Ultimately, though, the young industry is full of uncertainties. So far, research on marine carbon removal has been based on lab experiments and trials. So as Equatic's planned Quebec plant moves ahead, scientists will be watching to learn more about its environmental impact and about just how effective marine carbon dioxide removal can really be.
