In the tough neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn completed some of their most innovative street paintings. Koolhaas and Urhahn met as university students and began working together professionally when Koolhaas was making a documentary film about hip-hop in Brazil's favelas—the informal, urban neighborhoods in which many of Brazil's very low-income families live. While visiting these favelas, the artists saw something different—potential. What if they could paint the old houses and dirty buildings and turn them into art
Most favelas in Brazil were built by the people who live in them as they moved to the cities in search of work. They were built without any of the planning that makes cities functional and attractive. Koolhaas and Urhahn wanted to do their paintings in the same way the favelas were built, using local people to paint and letting the paintings be created without too much planning. First, they started spending a lot of time in Vila Cruzeiro, a favela neighborhood. As local residents became excited about the project, Koolhaas and Urhahn began hiring local workers to paint the houses they selected. They worked for 18 months, and the result was colorful neighborhood paintings that cover dozens of buildings.
Critics of Koolhaas and Urhahn's art projects say that painting such troubled neighborhoods does not address the real problems they face. Koolhaas and Urhahn agree. They don't expect a painting to solve complex social and economic issues. However, they believe that bringing colorful art into disadvantaged neighborhoods does something else. It inspires the local residents and gives them pride in their community. It changes attitude.
So Koolhaas and Urhahn will continue to bring art to troubled communities. They have worked in Haiti and Curacao and receive emails from interested cities every week. They hope their work will encourage kids to pursue creative careers.

Dancing lowers the depression associated with Parkinson's disease, and the benefits can be seen in multiple ways, a new study shows.
“It was very cool to see dance had a positive effect on the mood circuits in the brain, which we could see in the imaging from MRI brain scans (扫描),” says Joseph DeSouza, author of the study. “These improvements were also reported by the participants via survey. Our study is the first to demonstrate these benefits across these two detection methods.”
The study followed 23 participants with Parkinson's disease from the Sharing Dance Parkinson's program at Canada's National Ballet School, along with family members or caregivers. Participants took weekly dance classes for 8 months, progressing from simple leg and foot work to more complex movements like waltzes and more. The research team focused on the subcallosal cingulate gyrus (SCG), a brain region linked to depression. They measured mood and depression before and after each class using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) (老年抑郁量表) and conducted regular MRI scans.
The researchers found that after each dance class, reported depression rates dropped, and the effect was increasing from class to class, with significant improvements after 8 months. “We showed that SCG's BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) signal decreases while dancing, which means the SCG was not functioning as fast as it would if you had depression,” says DeSouza. “Parkinson's disease is often accompanied by depression long before motor symptoms (症状) appear.”
Dance is thought to have a double benefit, with music activating the brain's reward centers, and the movement acting on sensory and motor circuits. DeSouza, dancing with participants for 14 years, says that while dancing is not a treatment for Parkinson's disease by itself, the benefits are clear. “We're not trying to cure it with dance,” he says. “What we're trying to do is to have people live a better quality of life. This goes for both the patients, and their families that take care of them.”

A battle broke out at the weekend over a hedge (树篱) in Lincolnshire. The hedge, near the town of Winterton, was covered in netting by Partner Construction, which has applied for planning permission to build 40 homes on the site. This is standard practice, the developer said, in order to prevent birds from nesting in a habitat that might be damaged if building work begins later in the year.
However, a group of local people opposed to the development produced a video showing birds trapped beneath the nets. Chris Packham shared the video on the Internet. Packham said the nets showed disregard of how to look after the countryside, and said, if he were there, he would “tear those nets”.
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it illegal to intentionally “take, damage or destroy” the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built. In theory, this even bans people from cutting away some of the branches of their fruit trees if doing so harms a nest that they know is there. Any tree or hedge becomes a protected site the moment a bird settles in it, which is often the case between February and August—potentially shutting down an entire construction site for the busy half of the year.
To address the problem, conservationists and builders agree to find a middle ting an empty tree or a bush in winter is certainly better than making the birds look for a new site in the middle of the reproduction season. “Netting is probably the lowest-impact option if a habitat has to be removed during the reproduction season,” a spokesman for Partner Construction said. “We appointed qualified and experienced ecologists to carry out the work on our behalf. They have convinced us and provided photographic evidence that there were no birds in the hedge after it was netted.”

From popular pies to Happy Meals, a food writer recreates American classics with an Asian flavor. Frankie Gaw's social media page is filled with videos of creations like these—items people won't usually find at your local American store. Gaw is an Asian American food creator and author of the cookbook First Generation.
“I asked myself, since the world has embraced all of these diverse flavors, what are the things that Asian Americans would want to see?” Gaw talked about how his popular social media cooking series “Turning American classics Asian” came to be. Growing up, Gaw felt like he was living a specific life. In public, Gaw enjoyed chicken and fries. At home, he ate his grandmother's beef noodle soup. It took time for him to embrace his two tastes.
Years later in his Seattle apartment, Gaw began experimenting with his childhood favorites. He made cream of mushroom soup and turned it into porridge. Gaw shared his food on social media. It took off. His food and his experiences at the grocery store received strong feedback, especially from other Asian Americans. “It was a surprise. I didn't realize so many people had similar experiences as me,” he said.
The project also came from Gaw's Midwestern roots. In his neighborhood, restaurants were synonymous (同义的) with fast food. Late nights with his parents at fast food restaurants' drive-through were common as a kid, because his parents were often tired after long hours at work. “It was a reminder of how they were occupied,” he said.
In Gaw's version of a Happy Meal, he made Baozi and combined pork with vegetables, topping it off with chili sauce. As he cooked, he thought about his father, his mother, his grandparents—and the comfort that these dishes would have brought them as they were adjusting to life in America. He said, “To see their food at a fast food restaurant, I think it would have made them feel like they have a seat at the table.”

In a world where tech companies often compete to create the next productivity tool, a new device is breaking away from the pack.Meet Friend: a new wearable AI companion that you wear around your neck. The small device records your every word and interaction and responds accordingly by text.
The device comes at a time when loneliness and social isolation (孤独) are at record highs.Studies indicate that 61% of young people in the U.S.suffer from serious loneliness, a statistic that reveals a growing mental health crisis. While AI reshapes all the ways we interact in jobs, healthcare and entertainment — more and more people report feeling socially isolated.Schiffmann, Meet Friend's founder, sees it differently: the device isn't a replacement for human relationships but rather a way to fill the gaps when human companionship is hard to come by.
AI companionship is controversial (有争议的).While some people, like Schiffmann, argue that it can help people feel less isolated, others worry that AI relationships might displace real human connections, and thus make people feel more lonely. If you are someone who already struggles with human interactions, the_thinking goes, why would you continue to subject yourself to them when you have an AI friend who's fun and uncomplicated, and doesn't come with all the baggage of another person
But so far, the research doesn't seem to support this fear.Drake-Maples at Stanford University surveyed more than 1,000 students who used the AI chatbot Replika, and investigated their feelings of loneliness and perceived social support.Roughly half of these users reported decreased anxiety, and a feeling of social support.Nearly a quarter of those surveyed said they are more able to handle stress in their current relationship because of Replika's advice.
It is still a new field though, and Drake-Maples says there needs to be guidelines.“I strongly believe that you do need to have ethical guidelines around AI companions pushing people back when appropriate, towards human relationships,” she says. These could be gentle reminders like “Hey, you should go chat with somebody about that” or “Go practice this now with a real human.”

In the age of artificial intelligence (AI), foreign language learning seems to be unnecessary. There are now translation tools to understand song lyrics, translate websites, and make automatic captions when people watch foreign videos and movies. Our phones can quickly translate spoken words. They can also help teachers communicate with parents who speak different languages. Why invest time and effort in learning another language when technology can do it for you Because the new technology also has certain limits, and learning languages offers certain unexpected advantages.
In 2019, staff at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detention Centre in the United States used AI translation to process a refugee application. The voice-translation tool failed to understand the applicant's regional accent or dialect, leading to the applicant spending six months in detention unable to communicate effectively with anyone.
When it comes to learning additional languages, it ranks among the most effective ways to enhance our overall well-being, offering significant benefits to brain flexibility, cognitive health, and increased opportunities for personal career development.
The importance of knowing multiple languages for their social benefits and promoting cultural democracy has also been emphasized. This year, the Council of Europe launched the “Language education at the heart of democracy” programme. The goal is to highlight the significance of learning languages for building a fairer society.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, English is mostly spoken. Te reo Maori and New Zealand Sign Language are also recognized as official languages. Approximately 29% of citizens are born overseas. There are more than 150 languages spoken, with at least 24 spoken by over 10,000 individuals. The presence of these languages is crucial to social democracy.
While AI-powered translation technology has its applications, the advantages of being bilingual or multilingual—both individually and collectively—risk being overlooked if we merely rely on technology for communication and neglect to support second language learning.

We often fall into the trap of assuming rational (理性的) thought is naturally superior to intuitive (直觉的) responses. __1(____)__ In truth, we should find agreement between what our heart wants and what our reason says.
Rational thinking proves particularly valuable in certain situations. __2(____)__ Without it, we might rely too heavily on emotions, leading to poor decisions. __3(____)__ People who are more analytic are seen less approachable, which may make them seem distant or unfeeling. As a result, they might struggle to build close relationships or communicate warmth in social situations.
Intuitive thinking, though sometimes imperfect, shows impressive effectiveness in many everyday situations. Chess masters instantly recognize strong moves, firefighters make life-saving decisions through instinct, and artists make creations through sudden inspiration—none of which could be achieved through slow, step-by-step analysis. These examples remind us that intuition is not the opposite of reason. __4(____)__
A
C
In our modern world of constant information, the ability to use both thinking styles becomes especially valuable. Life is not a problem to be solved by logic alone, nor a feeling to be trusted blindly. __5(____)__ In the end, to live well is to think with both the precision of a scientist and the grace of an artist—calculating when needed, but never silencing the inner voice that says, “This just feels right.”

5.解析:D 上文“Life is not a problem to be solved by logic alone, nor a feeling to be trusted blindly.”以及下文“In the end, to live well is to think with both the precision of a scientist and the grace of an artist—calculating when needed, but never silencing the inner voice that says, ‘This just feels right.’”说明生活需要逻辑与情感的平衡,并用科学家和艺术家类比理性与直觉的结合,空处需总结全文核心观点,强调理性与直觉结合的重要性。故选D。(共18张PPT)

Should Community Service Be a
Requirement for Graduation
As a high school student,I firmly believe that community service should be included as a graduation requirement.Firstly, community service should be a graduation requirement because it benefits society and promotes students' growth.By volunteering, students develop empathy and social responsibility, which are crucial for personal development.Additionally, they gain invaluable skills like teamwork and problem-solving.If schools mandate community service, students will contribute more to their communities. This requirement fosters compassion and strengthens society, making it essential for education.

It was a sunny morning when I packed my bags for a business trip. The house was filled with the usual hustle and bustle (熙熙攘攘), but today there was a sense of excitement mixed with a bit of anxiety. This would be the first time I would be leaving my son, Max, behind for a few days. Max, five years old, was used to having me around. Little did he know, today was going to be a day of new experiences and emotions.
As I took out my suitcase, Max entered the room, his eyes wide with curiosity. “Mom, where are you going?” he asked, his voice carrying innocence and some concern. I smiled, “I've to go on a trip for work, Max. I'll be back in a few days.”
Max's eyes grew even wider, and I could see the look of shock on his face. He had never been apart from me for more than a day, and the concept of me being away was completely new to him. “But, Mom, who will take care of me?” he asked, his voice trembling (颤抖) slightly.
I hugged him tightly, saying, “Dad will be here with you, and Grandma is coming over to help. You'll have so much fun with them, and I'll call you every day,” I said, hoping to ease his worries. Max nodded slowly, but I could tell he was still unsure.
As the day went on, I noticed Max staying close to me, watching my every move. He helped me pack, and brought me items he thought I might need, like his favorite toy car and a drawing he made for me. His small gestures touched my heart, and I realized how much he cared.
When it was finally time for me to leave, Max stood by the door, his expression a mix of bravery and sadness. I hugged him one last time and whispered, “I'll be back before you know it, Max. Be good and remember that I love you.” He nodded, with tears in his eyes.

As I drove away, I couldn't help but glance back at the house. There he was, standing at the window, waving with a small smile on his face. It was a moment that touched my heart, but I knew this experience would be valuable for both of us. During my trip, I called Max every evening. We talked about his day, the fun he was having with Dad and Grandma, and the new things he was learning. Each call seemed to ease his worries a little more, and by the third day, he sounded more confident and happier.
When I finally returned home, Max greeted me with the biggest hug ever. “Mom! You're back!” he exclaimed, his face lighting up with joy. At that moment, I realized how much he had grown in just a few days. He had faced his fears and come out stronger. This experience taught Max an important lesson about resilience and independence. It showed him that even when things change, he can adapt and thrive. It also reminded me of the importance of developing these qualities in him and helping him become a strong and confident individual.

Eight-year-old Faris had to get on a ship to go to his new school. What would it be like at his new school He worried about this for the whole journey. He was also anxious that the other pupils might make fun of his teeth as he had two extra teeth in his upper jaw. Would anybody want to be his friend
Faris didn't realise that many of the other boys felt just as lonely as he did. He eventually gathered the courage to start chatting with the other pupils, covering his teeth with his hand. He soon made some new friends.
His teachers believed that the best way to help students who were homesick was to cheer them up with sports and activities. Then there was music! The students had to take part in choir (合唱) practice, and that was when the music teacher noticed that Faris had an extraordinary voice. He hit every note perfectly!
When Faris was twelve, his friends told him about a new kind of music from Britain and America.
“It's called rock ‘n’ roll! ” whispered David. “The headmaster says it's a bad influence and we shouldn't listen to it...” Bruce showed Faris a black-and-white picture cut out of a magazine. It was of a handsome man with an impossibly cool haircut standing on his toes (脚趾) as he sang with his eyes closed. That guy's called Elvis! The government wants to ban him because he makes his fans go crazy. He's the greatest music star in the world! This sounded exciting to Faris—the shy boy liked the idea of people going crazy for him, too.
He and four of his friends slipped into the teachers' office one night. They gathered around the radio and switched it on... There was a rolling beat, a loud guitar, and a bouncing piano rhythm (旋律) that made Faris want to get up and dance. It was the most exciting thing in the world!
He and his friends listened to several rock ‘n’ roll songs before slipping back to the dormitory. They were too excited to sleep.

“We should form a band.” Bruce whispered. Everyone's eyes lit up with excitement as they nodded in agreement. They all thought it was a brilliant idea. Faris, though still a bit shy, was also eager to try. They decided to practice secretly in an abandoned classroom at the back of the school, where no one would disturb them. They searched everywhere for old instruments that they could use. It took them weeks to gather enough, but finally they had a guitar, a piano, and some drums. As they practiced, Faris realized that this was what he truly loved, and he hoped that one day they could show everyone their music. Finally, the school announced a talent show, and the boys saw their chance to shine.
Stepping onto the stage, Faris took the microphone and began to sing. His voice, which had been praised by the music teacher years ago, now soared through the air. The audience, who had come to the school concert with low expectations, were instantly captivated. The song they had chosen, which was a classic rock ‘n’ roll piece, had everyone on their feet, clapping and dancing. Faris knew that this was the moment he had been waiting for. What he had once worried about, like his extra teeth and being lonely, no longer mattered. All that counted was the music that he and his friends were creating, and the joy it brought to everyone.
