Mr Dan Marcanruono, known as Mr Marc, teaches philosophy and moral thinking at a high school. Before becoming an educator, Mr Marc worked in healthcare consulting, drove a delivery truck for a laundry company and worked temporarily in business development. Teaching wasn’t something he had seriously considered until he joined the Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. As part of his scholarship, he was required to teach courses in creative writing to college students. “I don’t think I would have gotten into teaching if I hadn’t gone to that school.” he said.
From his teaching experiences, Mr Marc quickly realized that teaching requires more than just knowing the subject. This approach helps students feel noticed.
“My ultimate goal as a teacher is to help students start to question the things they take for granted or the things they just assume are true about the world,” said Mr Marc, who describes his teaching journey as a blessing. Perfume (香味;香水) has held a special place in human history. The traditional making process involves collecting raw materials, producing oils, mixing, aging and quality control. For centuries, perfumers have merely relied on their own senses. But now modern-day perfumers are beginning to look beyond their noses. They are, instead, turning to neurotechnology (神经技术).
Perfume now can be designed to stimulate emotional responses using neuroscents (神经气味) shown by biometric measures — the use of biological data to analyze human responses — to help inspire different positive feelings such as calm, joy or sleepiness. Neurotechnology can also help perfumers analyze the chemical composition of these neuroscents and find new combinations of raw materials that can produce similar or enhanced effects.
Researcher Hugo Ferreira is trying to build a database of neuroscents. “With sight and hearing, you can imagine the face of a loved one or the favourite tune. It’s hard to imagine a smell though it can stimulate a series of emotions and memories.”
Ferreira explains this is due to the structure of the olfactory (嗅觉的) system. Messages from scent receptors are sent through the olfactory bulb to different brain areas that control everything from memory or thirst to stress reactions. Olfaction is the most diverse sense with many different receptors. It’s estimated that there are about 400 different olfactory receptor gene families. Among other things these various connections may explain how we can “smell fear, or victory.”
L’Oréal, a French multinational personal care company, has partnered with neurotechnology company Emotiv to create a scent choice “experience”. During 2023, shoppers at certain stores used a device to discover which scents appealed to them. Results so far show that 95% of customers who used the device found the right perfume. Another perfume from Givenchy, a French luxury fashion and perfume house, has been a bestseller for years, which includes a special substance chosen after biometric research.
However, perfume writer Katie Puckrik says she’d like to “design her own perfume”. “Leave the magic to the artists. Why do we need a computer to tell us what our nose already knows Finding a new favorite scent by chance is a rare moment of grace we should allow ourselves,” she says.
8. How can neurotechnology function in the perfume-making process
A. By distinguishing one scent from the other.
B. By exploring the best way to obtain special oil.
C. By finding the scents most appealing to people.
D. By offering perfumers information of materials.
9. What does Ferreira want to indicate in paragraph 3
A. The close connection among our senses.
B. The great complexity of the olfactory system.
C. The relationship between emotion and memory.
D. The significance of having a good imagination.
10. Why are the perfume brands mentioned in the text
A. To show applications of neurotechnology.
B. To collect more data for biometric research.
C. To illustrate the fierce competition between them.
D. To stress their dominance in the perfume industry.
11. What is Katie Puckrik’s attitude towards the new technology
A. Tolerant. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Negative.

A study by Tulane University reveals that frequent illness may accelerate brain aging and increase the risk of dementia (痴呆) or cognitive decline. The findings highlight the importance of maintaining good health to prevent infections, especially among the elderly and dementia-prone individuals.
The study examined aging male mice and found that repeated, intermittent experiences with moderate inflammation (发炎), such as that caused by the flu or a seasonal head cold, caused impaired cognition and disrupted communication between neurons in those mice.
“We were interested in asking whether differences in infection experience could account, at least in part, for the differences in rates of dementia we see in the population,” said lead author Elizabeth Engler-Chiurazzi, PhD. “The mice we were studying were healthy adults approaching middle age, and yet, when exposed to intermittent inflammation, they remembered less and their neurons functioned more poorly.”
This study is the first to model repeated, intermittent infections in mice and examine the long-term consequences for brain function and health.
Humans often experience infections and inflammation at substantially higher rates than laboratory mice. But given that impairments were observed in mice after only five intermittent inflammatory treatments, the cognitive change in humans may be more severe.
“Our mice only experienced intermittent sickness-like inflammation a handful of times, so the fact that we observed impairments at all was surprising,” Engler-Chiurazzi said. “The effects were subtle, but that’s why I find these results meaningful: in a human, cognitive impairments from a similar number of inflammatory experiences might not be noticeable in their daily lives but could have accumulative effects that negatively impact the aging brain.”
The findings may have important implications for standard of care around how infections are handled among the elderly and those at risk for dementia. Going forward, Engler-Chiurazzi said more work needs to be done to understand why infections impact the brain and how to mitigate those effects. In addition, she hopes follow-up studies will investigate whether weaker populations face a higher burden of neurological effects. “The biggest takeaway from this research, in our opinion, is the importance of staying as healthy and infection-free as possible,” she said.
12. The researchers conduct the study in order to_________.
A. highlight the frequent illness is harmless to human beings.
B. identify whether the repeated inflammation will cause impaired cognition.
C. explain the adult male mice are more likely to have impaired cognitive function.
D. show cognitive impairments from a few inflammatory experiences is not noticeable.
13. What can we learn about the study
A. The brains of these mice were unaffected by the disease.
B. The infections have little effect on impacting the aging brain.
C. Humans will suffer even more severe cognitive decline because of the frequent illness.
D. Researchers used to examine the effects of repeated infections on brain function and health.
14. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 7 mean
A. relieve B. strengthen C. promote D. emphasize
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The standard of care has been revealed.
B. Mice will suffer from impaired cognition by flu.
C. We human beings should stay as healthy and infection-free as possible.
D. The connection between frequent illness and dementia has been discovered.

One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy — his name was Bernard — had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara, “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John, “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

By encouraging a sense of teamwork and mutual respect, he aims to create an environment where students feel valued. “I try to get to know my students and then take time during class to talk to them individually,” he added. This approach helps students feel noticed.
“My ultimate goal as a teacher is to help students start to question the things they take for granted or the things they just assume are true about the world,” said Mr Marc, who describes his teaching journey as a blessing. He acknowledges that his path to teaching was unexpected, but he’s grateful for the experiences he has come across.

The student syndrome (综合症) is a phenomenon where a large number of students put off doing things until right before the deadline (最后期限). ____16____ Since it involves unnecessary delay, it usually leads to negative results for those who display it. They will feel stressed and overwhelmed, and the task seems to be never finished.
To avoid the student syndrome, you should figure out what’s causing you to delay in the first place, and then use some techniques. ____17____
Break your tasks into small and manageable steps. For example, if you need to write an article, you can start with small steps, such as figuring out the title, creating a rough description, and finding five appropriate academic sources. Keep it in mind that if the project in question is large, then you generally shouldn’t worry about figuring out all the steps to it from the very beginning. ____18____ Then find new steps as you make progress along the way. This helps you avoid feeling upset and getting stuck.
____19____ For example, if you have a single deadline for completing a large research paper, set additional deadlines along the way for completing specific parts of it. These additional deadlines to be met will make the very large research paper more manageable and less frightening.
Find your productivity cycles. People’s ability to complete certain tasks is different based on a great many factors such as the time of day. For example, it may be the case that you’re best able to concentrate on difficult tasks early in the morning, before you’ve started dealing with emails or minor administrative aspects of your job. ____20____
Follow these techniques and you are unlikely to wait until the last minute.
A. Establish specific goals for yourself.
B. Set intermediate (中间的) deadlines for yourself.
C. They can help you take action in a timely manner.
D. This phenomenon can be considered to be a form of delay.
E. You should take this into account when scheduling your work.
F. Instead, start by finding the first few steps that you need to take.
G. You should change your environment to make it easier for yourself to get started.

47. The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.

Needless to say, they were deeply moved, especially Bernard who finally found a way to make money for his family. A few days later, the machine was delivered to Mrs. Meredith’s doorstep. And it wasn’t long before they got the hang of using the machine to make popcorn.
With everything ready Bernard started out on his new business.

【答案】范文:
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. Although it was a hard time and things were tight for everybody, Bernard’s business worked out quite well. He carried the popcorn on his small bike, going from door to door to sell it. People were surprised to see such a little, poorly-dressed boy selling popcorn at their doors, but eventually almost all of them would buy a bag or two. It is love that makes the world go round and Bernard felt it deep in his little heart.
