Over the past three years, Kang Jian has created more than 400 dough sculptures (面塑) and become a city-level inheritor (传承人) of this intangible cultural heritage in Mohe, Heilongjiang Province.
“When I was a little boy, every time my parents made dumplings, they would give me a small piece of dough,” he said. “I tried to make various animals — a rabbit, a fish, or a snail. The small, simple objects brought me lots of good childhood memories and planted the seeds of fine art, especially sculpture, in my heart.” Kang’s parents were not financially able to support his desire to study fine arts while he was at school. But he didn’t give up. He spent his spare time after school studying drawing by himself.
Then, in December 2018, during a visit to a museum in Beijing, Kang, for the first time, got information about the intangible cultural heritage of dough sculpting, which attracted him greatly. “I was really excited to learn about dough sculpting.” he said. “Then I had the idea of taking my childhood interest up again.” He then spent 20 days learning skills from Bai Chunyu, a provincial-level inheritor of dough sculpting. And in August 2019, he got the chance to learn from another national-level inheritor.
Kang spent nearly all his spare time practicing, hoping to improve quickly. “To learn as much as possible during my 40 days there, I practiced every day from 6 am until late at night,” he said. “When I slept, I had to put my hands in hot water to relieve the pain. But all the efforts turned out to be worth it.”
In April, Kang completed the dough sculptures of 108 characters from the novel Outlaws of the Marsh after 16 months of work. “Most of my dough sculptures are traditional Chinese characters. In my mind, the real value of my dough sculpture as a national intangible cultural heritage lies in its connection with traditional Chinese culture. That’s the charm and significance of the art,” he said.
4. What inspired Kang to have the dream of dough sculpting
A. His talent for drawing.
B. His admiration for Bai’s skills.
C. His parents’ encouragement and support.
D. His childhood experiences with dough.
5. What did Kang do to learn dough sculpting
A. He sought guidance from masters.
B. He paid frequent visits to museums.
C. He got formal training at an art school.
D. He sought help from many sculpting lovers.
6. What does Kang probably think of his learning of dough sculpting
A. Tiring but rewarding. B. Costly and stressful.
C. Fruitful and smooth. D. Boring but productive.
7. Why does Kang like making dough sculptures of Chinese characters
A. To get more recognition.
B. To attract more enthusiasts.
C. To better express Chinese culture.
D. To improve skills with familiar characters.

Have you ever thrown a camel Camels are large and heavy animals, so it would be hard to do so. But in the French-speaking Democratic Republic of the Congo, “to throw a camel” is a way of saying “to make a spelling mistake”. In the past, a phrase like that was not accepted by the French government as an official French term. But recently, the French Ministry of Culture worked on a new kind of dictionary that accepts the idea that many people in other countries and regions speak the language. The language has changed as time goes by and is different in places like Ivory Coast in West Africa or Quebec in Canada, compared to how it is in Paris.
The new online French dictionary includes new French words from around the world. It was released (发布) on March 18—just in time for International Francophonie Day on March 20. After its release, it is updated (更新) on a regular basis. It now contains about 600,000 terms. The French Culture Minister says the dictionary is not just for France’s 67 million citizens, but for the 300 million French speakers worldwide.
Supporters say the new dictionary is more democratic (大众化的) than earlier French dictionaries that only showed the way highly educated French people spoke. Official dictionaries produced by the French Academy in Paris were first published hundreds of years ago and are regularly updated. The online dictionary, however, has a new part you cannot find in a book. If you live in Senegal, for example, you can search the dictionary, and it will give you the meaning of a word based on its use in that country.
“The French no longer have a monopoly (独占) on French,” a French magazine that supports the dictionary wrote recently. “And that is good news”.
8. What do we know about the phrase “to throw a camel”
A. It tells us camels are too large to be thrown.
B. It can be found in an ancient French dictionary.
C. It is a phrase still not accepted by the French government.
D. It can be used when you see someone makes a spelling mistake.
9. How is the online French dictionary different from other dictionaries
A. It needs updating regularly. B. It is mainly for non-French speakers.
C. It takes in worldwide French usages. D. It includes few official French terms.
10. What do the supporters think of the dictionary
A. It helps spread standard French. B. It’ll attract more people to learn French.
C. It’ll benefit French’s development. D. It brings 300 million French speakers.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Culture. B. Opinion. C. Technology. D. Lifestyle.
D
Do you need to throw your smartphone away to live your best life Not necessarily, according to researchers from Ruhr-Universit t Bochum who suggest that we could all benefit from cutting down on screen time — just only a little bit time.
On average, we spend more than three hours a day on our smartphone screens. Between social media, news feeds, endless video games, and an app for pretty much everything else, there’s always something to draw our attention. In recent years, studies have blamed(责备) smartphones for modern problems ranging from rising anxiety rates to neck pain. It begs the question: Are people all really better off turning back to landlines(座机)
“The smartphone is both a blessing and a curse,” says study leader Dr. Julia Brailovskaia, whose team set out to answer that question by gathering together 619 volunteers, hoping to know how much the smartphone is good for us. 200 people put their smartphones completely aside for a week; 226 reduced the amount of time they used the device by one hour a day; 193 people didn’t change anything in their behavior.
Researchers interviewed each person about both their overall lifestyle habits and well-being four months later after the experimental week ended. “We found that both completely giving up the smartphone and reducing its daily use by one hour had positive effects on the well-being of the participants(参与者),” as Brailovskaia sums up the upshots. Notably, changing their smartphone habits for just one week appeared to produce lasting outcomes to the subjects(实验对象). Even four months afterward, participants who were told to avoid using their smartphones totally were using their phones for an average of 38 minutes less per day.
Meanwhile, the “one hour less” group were using their phones as much as 45 minutes less per day after four months. This group also showed improved life satisfaction, more exercise, and less depression(沮丧).
“It’s not necessary to completely give up the smartphone to feel better,” Brailovskaia concludes.
12. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 2
A. To stress the benefits of smartphones.
B To state disadvantages of the experiment.
C. To explain why the experiment was done.
D. To answer the question on the smartphones.
13. What did the researchers do to the volunteers before testing them
A. They trained them.
B. They interviewed them.
C. They gave them a physical exam.
D. They divided them into 3 groups.
14. What does the underlined word “upshots” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. purpose B. results C. reasons D. doubts
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Fewer smartphones, more well-being.
B. No smartphone use is the best policy.
C. Smartphones are a part of our lives.
D. A small smartphone, two big sides.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Is a moviegoer different than a movie-lover I’d say so. You can love a movie by watching it at home. ____16____. I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about movies. By listening to what they say, I can report they only share one thing in common: they go out.
I’ve thought about two views of the moviegoer lately.
The first view comes from Roland Barthes. Most often, his moviegoers don’t go to the movies for a distinct purpose. ____17____. They are bored. Once they get inside, they can’t help but sink into a relaxed state. When they leave the movie theater, these moviegoers don’t want to talk to anyone about the movie. ____18____. Barthes sees them as a lonely being, one who is introspective (自省的). I think some of us use movie theaters to retreat inside ourselves.
The second view comes from the Clark Theater manager, Bruce Trinz. When people go to the movies they go for a certain personal motive. They may want to forget something, or escape from the lives they are leading. Or they may want to see a film they liked years ago. ____19____, they are the hopeless addicts who, quite simply, like movies. The only thing I would challenge in this definition is the word hopeless. ____20____, but they come to the movies filled with hope. They may not be able to define what they hope to experience, but they will know it when they feel it.
A. Whatever motive they have
B. To be a moviegoer, you have to go out
C. The movie also puts them somewhere else
D. They are instead wrapped up in themselves
E. Because moviegoers go in search of beauty
F. Moviegoers may be hopelessly addicted to the movies
G. It’s something to do with a response to leisure, free time
