Millions of Englishmen have stopped saying “thank you” and now say “cheers”. Although the average person will say “thank you” nearly 5,000 times a year, one in three of them is more likely to say “cheers” or “ta”. They think “thank you” is out of date. One in 20 now says “nice one” instead, while younger people are more likely to offer a “cool”. “Merci”, “fab” and even “gracias” were also listed as common words to use.
Nick Thorogood, managing director of Food Network UK, said, “When it comes to saying ‘thank you’, people will always find the way that works best for them and it’s interesting to see what the act means to different people. A quarter of us choose to say ‘thank you’ through delicious food. Taking the time and effort to say ‘thanks’ is still very important to us.”
However, it seems that sometimes displays of good manners are just clear. A huge 70 percent of those questioned admit they will say “thank you” to a person’s face without even meaning it. Half of the people questioned admit it is rubbish to thank those closest to them, because they think their family already know their gratitude.
When spoken words won’t do, it falls to a nice text to do the job for most people, like SMS (short message service). A thank-you e-mail is also popular, while a quarter turn to social networks to express thanks. A quarter of Englishmen say “thank you” with food, with 23 percent cooking a meal to show their appreciation to someone. Another 15 percent bake a cake. A third will still send a handwritten thank-you note — but 45 percent admit it’s been more than six months since they bothered to send one.
41. Why do many Englishmen stop using the words “thank you”
A. They are afraid to hurt others. B. They think it out of date.
C. They don’t think it necessary. D. They don’t want to express thanks.
42. What can we learn from Nick Thorogood’s words
A. People in Britain say “thank you” much more than before.
B. Most people in Britain say “thank you” only at meal time.
C. Half of Englishmen say “thank you” through food.
D. It’s important to express thanks to other people.
43. What does the underlined word “gratitude” mean in Paragraph 3
A. Manners. B. Courage. C. Appreciation. D. Confidence.
44. Which method of expressing “thank you” is NOT mentioned in the passage
A. Shaking hands. B. Baking a cake.
C. A thank-you note. D. A thank-you e-mail.
45. In which part of a newspaper can we find this passage
A. Sports. B. Science. C. Culture. D. Advertisement.

Zach Smith, an 18-year-old senior at Dwight-Englewood School in New Jersey, had a problem. “I was not happy with my school’s learning system (系统) , and so were my friends,” Zach said. “So I thought I could design an app (应用程序) that would bring together your homework and everything you need all in one place to make it easy for students to stay organized.”
That idea of creating My DE+ put Zach on a journey that would find him learning the finer points of UX design, working with coding platforms (编程平台) and, importantly, getting the-confidence and trust of the teachers at the school.
“I started with Figma, just prototyping (制作原型) what the app would look like. I met with my head teacher at school and showed him the design. He was like, ‘Whoa, that looks very cool! How do we get this in our school ’ And I don’t think he realized it was just a design. So now I had to get to work building the app,” Zach said.
At first, Zach was considering teaching himself how to code. That’s when he discovered Adalo. Zach was able to create a working prototype. The next question was how to get it on the phones of 500 students in the school. Zach used a business platform called Make. And he changed it and sent everyone a message.” I met with every grade at the school and showed them how to get the app. After a month I had 500 users on the app, which is almost my whole school,” Zach explained.
Zach now has been talking with other heads of technology of schools in New York City and adding all kinds of new functions (功能) like community pages.” In terms of what comes next I really hope my app can be used in other schools. I just love it when I can see an idea in my head, and follow it through from start to finish.”
46. What made Zach create MyDE+
A. His interest in coding platforms. B. Advice from the school managers.
C. AUX design class from his computer teacher. D. Dissatisfaction with the school’s learning system.
47. What impressed Zach’s head teacher
A. The first design of MyDE+. B. The new function of MyDE+.
C. The future development of MyDE+. D. The popularity of MyDE+on campus.
48. Which tool solved Zach’s problem with coding
A. Figma. B. Adalo. C. Make. D. UX design.
49. What can we expect of MyDE+
A. It will be family-friendly. B. It will take the place of Adalo and Make.
C. It will be introduced into different schools. D. It will awaken students’ interest in technology.
50. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Tech Project at Dwight-Englewood School.
B. 18-Year-Old Student’s School App Journey.
C. Day in the Life of an 18-Year-Old App Designer.
D. Build Community at Dwight-Englewood School.

When Spencer West was just five years old, he had a serious disease that resulted in the amputation(截肢)of both his legs. However, the young Canadian has never let his disability get in his way. He has shown that he could do anything a person with two legs could do, including climbing the world’s highest snow covered mountain—Mt. Kilimanjaro!
Spencer’s great adventure to get to the top of the 19,341 foot high peak began on June 13th from the small village of Naro Moru in Kenya. The team included his best friends David Johnson and Alex Meers.
For the first few days, Spencer walked 80 percent of the rocky road using his hands. Only when it became impossible would he use the wheel chair. As would be expected, the nights were very terrible—The ground underneath was rocky and the temperatures were lower than they expected.
Hard as it was, Spencer did not surrender the goal even once. However, as the road started becoming steeper(陡峭的) and rockier, his friends became worried about him—Even though
Spencer had spent over a year training for this event with his hands, they worried that he would have some serious injuries if he continued. They decided that in the last two days Spencer West would cut back his independent climb to half day and be carried the other half.
Things got more and more difficult as they got closer to the top. As the air got thinner, they suffered from sickness and the shortage of energy so that they stopped any talk—They needed all their energy to keep going. The only thought in their minds was to get to the top.
But, it was all worth it—Finally, Spencer West climbed Africa’s highest peak!
