Four Cool Languages
Chinese
Around 1.4 billion people speak Chinese. Chinese is a tonal (声调的) language, meaning that changing the tone of just one syllable (音节) can affect a word’s meaning. Chinese writing has ancient roots, which is thought to have developed starting around 2000 B. C.
Arabic
Over 370 million people speak Arabic. Written Arabic uses a cursive-style font (连笔) that looks more like artworks than writing. Arabic is written from right to left rather than left to right, making it different from many other languages.
English
Around 379 million people speak English as a native language. It’s an official language in a huge number of other countries.
English is the most widely spoken second language, with over a billion people speaking it as a non-native language. That means around twice as many people speak English as a second language than people who speak it as a first language.
Italian
Nearly 68 million people speak Italian. If you play music or sing, chances are that you already know a lot of Italian because many familiar musical terms are actually Italian.
Not only will learning Italian help you pick up vocabulary, but it will also help you understand the meanings of musical terms in greater depth.
21. What is a feature of Arabic
A. It doesn’t have cursive-style fonts. B. It helps artists with their artworks.
C. It is written from right to left. D. It is closely related to music.
22. Which language is the most widely used as a second language in the world
A. Arabic. B. English. C. Chinese. D. Italian.

My name is Linda. I am from Isla de Maipo, Chile. I live with my dad, my mom and a rabbit happily. But I was born with a cleft lip (唇裂).
I don’t remember anything about my first years with my cleft lip. All I know is that when I was young, my parents found Fundación Gantz in Santiago, where I had been for free treatment.
Every time when I went to Fundación Gantz, my heart was full of thanks to my parents. It was not easy to arrive on time for medical examination. We had to get up at six in the morning to drive for more than an hour and be careful not to get hit by other cars, but my parents never complained about such busy and tiring days.
Doctors at Fundación Gantz helped me a lot. First, they healed my cleft lip. Then, with orthodontic treatment (正畸治疗), they managed to correct my bite, and later they performed an operation on my jawbone.
I thank the doctors there who treated me, and Dr. Angus is my favorite — he has known me since I was born. When I was in the waiting room waiting for my operation on my jawbone, I was sweating all over in fear. Dr. Angus came to my side and talked to me endlessly about the things I was interested in, such as Kayros’ music and Bolano’s books, making me feel relaxed.
In the past, before the treatment, I had no confidence, and children made jokes on my cleft lip at school. I started training in Taekwondo (跆拳道) at the age of four in a gym next to my kindergarten and it was just what I needed at that time. It changed me and the children around me — before, children played tricks on me, but later they respected me. Today, when people talk about something on my lip, I will tell them the little mark never bothers me because it is so small that it can hardly be seen.
I want to tell the medical experts at Gantz to keep it up because their work is admirable, and they help a lot of people in need.
24. Which of the following can best describe the author’s parents
A. Selfless. B. Impatient. C. Fair. D. Outgoing.
25. How did Dr. Angus help the author reduce her fear of the operation
A. He read to her. B. He talked about interesting things with her.
C. He played music for her. D. He changed her operation plan.
26. How did Taekwondo change the 4-year-old author
A. It made her school time colorful. B. It built her confidence.
C. It improved her school performances. D. It prepared her for her future career.
27. What does the underlined word “something” refer to in paragraph 6
A. The color. B. The cost. C. The operation. D. The mark.
C
Slang (俚语) is a popular, less official and often very current form of language. It is an important part of a living language and is constantly changing as language changes. Slang is often playful, direct and sometimes less respectful than the more official and traditional version of language. So now I’m going to lay it on you! To “lay it on” is American slang for “to tell” or “to explain.”
Slang can take many forms. For example, slang can be local to one city or area. In Washington, D.C., there is a whole set of slang to describe politics and business in the city. For example, the term POTUS stands for President of the United States. POTUS can often be found with his wife, FLOTUS, the first lady of the United States. “Inside the Beltway” is a popular expression that describes the area of Washington, D.C. The beltway is the large highway that circles the city.
The Internet has helped create a whole new kind of computer-related slang. An “angry fruit salad” is an expression that describes a Web site with too many bright colors. “Netiquette” is slang for correct behavior when using the Internet.
Young people often develop the latest slang. For example, to say Special English “rocks” or is “phat” means Special English is really great. A “kegger” is a party where beer is served. If something is “wack”, it is wild and crazy.
Different professions often have their own slang as well. For example, medical workers might describe a complaining patient as a “gomer”. A “tough stick” is someone whose veins are difficult to find when he or she needs to have blood taken.
No matter how well you speak English, there are always new and interesting slang words to discover. There are entire dictionaries for describing slang. Many experts do not even agree on what is and what is not slang. Often slang words later become a part of officially accepted language. Official or not, slang is an energetic and exciting part of the American language that continues to change.
28. Which of the following can describe slang compared with the official language
A. Playful. B. Indirect. C. Very respectful. D. More official.
29. If you attend a beer party, which slang you may use
A. Gomer. B. Kegger. C. Phat. D. Netigquette.
30. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Good English learners have no trouble understanding English native speakers.
B. Slang words will never be accepted as official language.
C. Slang words are created by people in their daily life.
D. Slang may disappear in the near future.
31. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage
A. A Brief Introduction of Slang. B. An Interesting story of Slang.
C. The Difficulty of Slang. D. The Founder of Slang.
D
Several years ago, a worldwide heavy rain was predicted, but no one got prepared for what was to come. Then, some areas received over 100 mm of rain. Cars and trucks floated down the streets. Whole buildings were swept away. At least 225 people lost their lives, and millions became homeless.
The weather is always changing. Over the past few years, heavy rains have led to floods in many parts of the world. Droughts have taken place in Brazil and Australia. There have been heat waves in Europe which killed thousands. There have been more powerful hurricanes and tornadoes than ever before. In 2017 alone, the financial cost from global weather events was up to 340 billion dollars.
With more wild weather events happening, people couldn’t help asking questions: What is happening with the weather And why Is this natural, or our fault The answer seems to be: a little of both. Wild weather is natural. But most scientists hold the same view that human activity has made the Earth warmer. It is this global warming that makes heat waves more likely. The higher temperatures also result in more water going into the air, which causes heavier and more frequent rain. Many scientists also believe global warming makes hurricanes and other storms stronger.
This means we’re likely to see more wild weather. “But we don’t have to just stand there and accept it,” says scientist Michael. He and other experts say we need to stop the Earth from getting warmer. We also need to be prepared, to do things that will help save lives.
32. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph
A. A past weather event happened in some areas in the world.
B. Some facts are listed about the global warming.
C. A number of recent weather events happened over the world.
D. Wild weather is partly the result of human activity.
33. How does paragraph two develop
A. By giving a lot of examples of recent wild weather events.
B. By describing a serious flood that once happened.
C. By predicting how the weather will change in a few years.
D By comparing the former wild weather with what happened now
34. What does scientist Michael’s words mean
A. People can not do anything to prevent wild weather.
B. If people stop global warming, the weather will be better.
C. It is too late to stop global warming.
D. People have to stand by and accept what will happen to us.
35. Where can you probably find the text
A. In a tourist brochure B. In a research paper
C. In a science fiction D. In a nature magazine

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Be a Star of Your Own Movie
I always loved the movies. It didn’t even matter if I went to see them alone. In the movies, nothing seemed impossible: I became the star of the cheerleading team who leads her team to victory, or the teenager who bridges the gap between the races at her high school, or even the young woman who falls in love with a handsome nobleman from the nineteenth century. And I would always live happily ever after.
In fact, I liked to pretend what was happening on-screen was happening in my own life as well. I liked the happy endings, the perfect happy endings. I wanted my life to be like that, happy and wonderful. I wanted to escape the stress of family and friends and school. My only escape from the reality that trapped me was heading for a movie theatre.
I hadn’t always been this way. As a young girl I was outgoing and friendly, and even involved in after-school activities. High school was different, though. I became quiet and withdrawn.
My parents were worried about me. They urged me to call old friends or get more involved with school. After promising my parents a thousand times that I would call one of my old friends, I finally agreed. The only number I knew by heart was Sarah’s, so I called her. Sarah herself was pretty close to perfect: straight-A student, class president, off to Yale in the fall, beautiful, sweet, brilliant. We decided to meet fora pizza lunch.
We ate and talked and caught up on old times. I told her how difficult it had been for me in the past few years and how unbearable the pressure had been. “I wish my life was the way it is in the movies,” I sighed, “I would be so much easier.” I looked down through my fingers, face in my hands. “I understand,” she said. I looked up at her, questioning her with my eyes.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

【原文】Hi, everyone! My name’s Lily. I’m talking to you today because I want to encourage you to take up swimming. It’s a great sport. It isn’t expensive to do and it keeps you healthy. I learned to swim when I was about five. When I started primary school at seven, I joined a swimming club with good facilities, and I went swimming twice a week. I had a lovely coach called Anna. She encouraged me to enter competitions, and I did quite well. Nearly every Saturday we went to other towns to have competitions. That was fun and I won quite a lot of awards. At the age of 11, I moved to another club to accept advanced training. I had a new coach Mike, who was once an Olympic winner! He wanted me to receive training every day after school for an hour. My parents didn’t agree because I needed to spare some time for my school work. But they let me go three times a week. I love swimming and I would really introduce it to everyone.

D. The mark.
【答案】24 A 25. B 26. B 27. D

Unlike hurricanes or floods, earthquakes happen without warning and are usually followed by similar aftershocks, although the aftershocks are usually less powerful than the quake. If you find yourself in the middle of an earthquake, there’s often only a short time to decide what to do. ___36___
● Drop to the ground. The drop, cover, and hold on technique is the cousin of the famous “stop, drop and roll” for fires. ● Hold on. ___39___ Hold on to whatever surface or platform you’ve gotten under and wait for the shaking to stop. If you were unable to find a surface to hide under, continue to keep your head protected by your arms and tucked (躲藏,隐藏) down low.
● ___40___ Researchers have shown that most injuries happen when people try to change the place of hiding or when the place is crowded and everyone has a goal to get outside safe.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She explained she used to escape her realities by doing the same thing.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired by her words, I decided that I would produce my own life story.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 She explained she used to escape her realities by doing the same thing. “Then one day,” Sarah explained, “I started to think about why I wanted to be like the people in the movies.” And then it occurred to me that they had their scripts already written out for them. However, I had the ability to write my own script. “If I had the power to determine the plot of my life movie, then why wouldn’t I make it an inspiring one, a movie with a happy ending ” she said. “You are the star of your own movie. Now all you need is your story.” she added.
Inspired by her words, I decided that I would produce my own life story. No other actress could fill my role. It was up to me to produce, direct and edit my life. I would set my own goals I was capable of achieving from now on. There can be no success without the possibility of failure. The only sure way of failing is by refusing to try. I looked over at Sarah, and said “Thank you”, squeezing her hand. The curtain rose, and my film began.
