The Person I Take Pride In Among the excellent alumni of our school, Chen Meilan, a Wu Opera actress, is the one I take pride in. Born in 1964, she studied in No. 4 Middle School. In 1980, she began to learn opera, practicing day and night and never giving up. By 1989, she became famous all over China for her wonderful performances.
She is hard-working and always runs for hope. Her story encourages me a lot. Whenever I face difficulties in my studies, I’ll think of her and keep going. I will follow her example to be a persistent and brave person.

Hearing that Erin was coming for the silver wedding party, Mr. Joe and his wife got worried.
“Erin the thief!” said Mr. Joe to his wife. “Anything smaller than a table, and more expensive than paper, would finally be found in his bag.”

The Chengni inkstone (砚) is one of the “four famous inkstones” in our country. It first appeared during the Western Han Dynasty, but the skill of making it was lost during the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. It was later brought back to life by Lin Xiaolin’s grandfather Lin Yongmao and father Lin Tao.
In 1986, Lin Yongmao worked at a museum. He read many books about the Chengni inkstone there and decided to make it. Although he learned from the historical papers, this was no easy task. It took him and his son two years to find suitable mud (泥浆) materials. After many failures, they at last succeeded in making two Chengni inkstones in 1991. It took about a year and dozens of steps to make a Chengni inkstone. Three years later, their Chengni inkstone won a gold prize at an expo (博览会) on China’s famous inkstones.
Lin Xiaolin, as the inheritor of the skill of making Chengni inkstones, has known Chengni inkstones since his childhood. In 2011, he went abroad to study modern technologies. “For the Chengni inkstone, passing down the skill is the key to keeping it alive,” Lin Xiaolin said. He returned to China after he graduated from college in 2019. He hoped to make more Chengni inkstones by using modern technologies and traditional designs. And he has achieved much success.
Lin Xiaolin is trying hard to bring more energy to the Chengni inkstone and make it a symbol of Chinese culture.

“Click, click, click...” The drummer hit the drumsticks against each other to give a beat, and the band started to play. Kai played a guqin solo, and for most of the show, he played along with the rhythm of the drums. The band played faster and faster. Kai’s classmates jumped to their feet, clapping and screaming.
