During Ben Cloud’s second year in high school, he took a few business classes. They filled his head with ideas to start his own. He started by naturally thinking about things he liked. First, it was clothing. Then coffee. He thought about opening up a coffee shop. But both ideas seemed too hard and costly.
Some might stop right there and keep going about their regular life. But Ben is different. He kept thinking and came up with the idea of selling his own brand of coffee. He felt like there were possibilities to do this without too much money or risk. So he took to the Internet and started doing research. He finally found a coffee bean supplier and learned about all of the rules of starting a business. It all seemed discouraging but he never gave up.
After setting up his business, Ben started to order coffee and test different kinds with his friends and family. He got suggestions and improved his products. He had a little bit of savings from his birthdays and part-time jobs over the years and didn’t want to borrow money to start his business. So, he bartered with a designer to help him with his naming, logo, product pictures, photography, and website design. He would supply them with coffee for their design talent!
After setting up his website, Ben started to sell his coffee at his local high school coffee shop. Then a restaurant. Then local shops. Ben is now working on expanding (扩大) sales of his coffee to grocery stores and more in his local community. He does have plans to expand nationally. And Ben also helps to educate other kids and inspire them as to how they might start their own business.
Ben Cloud is an excellent example of a young person pushing himself to become the best he can be. He took his passion (酷爱) and stuck with it through many challenges to create something that is not only benefiting himself but his community and other teenagers. His advice is: “never let your age stand in the way of what you want to do.”
4. Why did Ben Cloud choose to sell his own coffee brand

Geda Qawla, who is 75, is having trouble remembering words from his native Ongota language. He’s one of only five people who can still speak it. As he gets older, he finds it harder to think of the names of things like trees and birds. “I can feel it leaving me. The others try to help me remember but they are the same, they are also forgetting and there’s no one left to teach us,” he said. Geda was afraid that as the remaining speakers age and pass away, the language may disappear with them.
This is just one example of a bigger problem happening all over the world. Languages are disappearing fast, with one dying every two weeks. If things don’t change, by the end of this century, half of the 7,000 languages we have now might be gone. The ones in the most danger are those that aren’t written down and those spoken by very few people.
The main reasons for this are technology and the way the world is becoming more connected. People who speak smaller languages are being pushed to stop using them and start speaking bigger languages. More people moving to new places also contributes to this, as they leave their native languages behind and learn new ones.
However, some languages that were almost gone have been saved. This happened through long-term efforts to bring them back to life. These efforts included teaching them in schools, using them in the media, and even putting them on road signs. But for most languages, like Ongota, there isn’t enough money or support to do this.
At Arba Minch University, some researchers are trying to save the Ongota language by making a dictionary. Some young Ongota people who have had an education also want to keep their language alive. For Savà, an Italian expert who studies people and their cultures, losing Ongota would be very sad. “When a language disappears,” he says, “you lose a special way of seeing the world that can’t be replaced (取代).”
8. What can we learn about Geda Qawla
A. He is skilled in his native language.
B. He is worried about the Ongota language.
C. He feels hopeful about the future of Ongota.
D. Young people want to learn Ongota from him.
9. What is the main reason why smaller languages become less common
A. The aging of native speakers.
B. The absence of educational support.
C. Technological development and globalization.
D. The shortage of dictionaries for smaller languages.
10. How have some nearly lost languages been saved
A. By building more schools for language study.
B. By editing dictionaries with researchers’ help.
C. By asking young people to stay in their hometowns.
D. By using them in education, media and public signs.
11. What does the author try to show by mentioning Savà in the last paragraph
A. The ways to view the world. B. The efforts in language protection.
C. The importance of language. D. The role of experts in saving language.

A group of scientists from Purdue University is changing how we view mosquitoes (蚊子). They’ re carefully studying its antennas (触角) and their ability to sense small shaking movements, which could become key in predicting (预测) natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis. “We’re still beginning but feel hopeful we’ll discover much,” says Professor Zavattieri, who led the study.
Mosquitoes don’t have traditional ears but depend heavily on their antennas to “hear” their way through life. These antennas help them find important sounds even while their own wings are beating noisily. The research examined the arrangement, shape, and tiny hairs on these antennas. These are believed to improve a mosquito’s hearing sensitivity and its ability to pick out specific environmental signals. “We also found that mosquito antennas can find out specific sounds unique to different groups of mosquitoes. This shows mosquito antennas can sense a variety of sounds than we knew before.” Professor Zavattieri said.
The team reproduced how antennas from various mosquitoes respond (回应) to different sounds. “By comparing different mosquitoes, we discovered the key parts that control hearing sensitivity,” explained Professor Bernal. “Understanding how these natural parts work is the first step toward creating sound sensors based on their design.”
Professor Zavattieri believes this research could help develop smart materials that prevent noise. These could be used in building walls, headphones, or even special hiding tools. “Imagine cities having nature-inspired sensors, like ‘big ears’, that can pick out specific sounds within city noise,” said Zavattieri. “During emergencies like earthquakes, these sensors could quickly find weak help signals and help rescue teams find people in need.”
The team is now using 3D printing to create manmade antennas with different materials and sizes to test which work best. This mosquito-inspired research could not only improve how we find earthquakes and tsunamis but also change emergency response in cities. We hope to place these sensors in buildings and public areas to always check for small shakes. This could let us discover disasters faster than we can now.
12. What is the scientists’ main goal of studying mosquito antennas
A To avoid natural disasters. B. To improve 3D printing technology.
C. To develop nature-inspired sensors. D. To understand animals’ communication.
13. How do antennas help mosquitoes guide their way
A. By feeling heat changes. B. By discovering important noises.
C. By creating flight movements. D. By making warning sounds quickly.
14. Why are researchers testing different materials
A. To save research cost. B. To explore the sensors’ application.
C. To make smaller sensors. D. To find the most effective materials.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text
A. Nature’s Design for disaster Warning. B. Building Better City Safety Systems.
C. Studying mosquito Antennas Seriously. D. Using 3D Printing in Animal Research.

September arrived with cool air and new starts. As a freshman at Westwood High, I felt lost until I met Mia. We became friends right away — sharing lunch tables, laughing through boring classes, and walking home together every day. “You’re like the sister I never had,” Mia said one afternoon, smiling as we sat under our favorite big tree. I nodded, feeling happy. For a month, we told each other everything—dreams, worries. Life felt perfect.
Problems came when my diary disappeared. I’d left it on my desk during gym class, and when I came back, it was gone. I was worried — my deepest secrets were inside. Later, I saw Mia talking quietly with Sarah, the girl who always gave me mean looks. Mia looked at me, then quickly looked away. “Did you see my diary ” I asked, my voice shaking. Mia’s eyes got big. “No, I … I haven’t seen it.” But her hands shook as she spoke. I felt a bad feeling in my stomach. Sarah smiled in a mean way, and I knew — Mia had taken it.
I stayed away from Mia completely. At lunch, I sat alone, staring at my sandwich. When she tried to talk to me, I turned my back. “What’s wrong ” she asked, her voice breaking. “Just leave me alone,” I said angrily. Mia’s face looked sad, and she ran off. Days turned into weeks. I missed her laugh, her advice, the way she could always make me smile. But I was too proud to say sorry. One rainy afternoon, I saw Mia sitting under our big tree, tears mixing with raindrops. My chest hurt, but I walked past her.
Something lucky happened when I stayed late to finish a project. As I walked past the library, I heard a voice I knew. “I can’t believe you took her diary!” It was Sarah, shouting at a boy named Jake.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】范文:
“I just wanted to see what she wrote about me,” Jake said quietly. I froze, my heart beating fast. My diary I rushed into the room, my face grew hot with anger. “That’s mine! You had no right to take it away!” I shouted, pulling it from Jake’s hands. Sarah’s face turned red. “I didn’t tell Mia anything,” she said in a lower voice. I held my diary tightly and ran out of the room. I felt something heavy was sitting in my stomach. Mia had been telling the truth all along. But I had blamed her for something she didn’t do, and she hadn’t even been angry with me.
The next day, I went to find Mia under our tree. “I’m so sorry,” I said, my voice shaky. “I thought you took my diary, but it was Jake. I have to trust you.” Mia looked at me and her eyes were welled up with tears. “Why didn’t you just ask me ” she whispered. I sat down beside her, tears falling too. “I was stupid. You’re my best friend, Mia. I don’t want to lose you.” Mia smiled through her tears and gave me a tight hug. I understood then — true friendship isn’t about never having fights. It’s about forgiving and trusting.
