Grandma Moses was an American folk painter who was internationally popular for her simple documentation of rural life in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
She had only irregular periods of schooling during her childhood. At age 12, she left her parents’ farm and worked as a hired girl until she married Thomas Moses in 1887. They first farmed in the Shenandoah Valley near Staunton, Virginia, and in 1905 moved to a farm at EagleBridge, New York. Thomas died in 1927, and Anna continued to farm with the help of her youngest son until advancing age, which forced her to retire to a daughter’s home in 1936.
As a child, the artist had drawn pictures and coloured them with the juice of berries and grapes. After her husband died, she created embroidery (刺绣) pictures. And, when her illness in hand made manipulating a needle too difficult, she turned to painting. At first, she copied illustrated postcards, but gradually she began to re-create scenes from her childhood.
Her early paintings were given away or sold for small sums. In 1939, Louis Caldor, an engineer and art collector, was impressed when he saw several of her paintings hanging in a drugstore window in Hoosick Falls, New York. He drove to her farm and bought all her 15 stored paintings. In October of that year, three of those paintings were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in a show titled “Unknown Painters”.
In October 1940, a one-woman show of 35 paintings was held at Galerie St. Etienne in New York. After that, her paintings were shown throughout the United States and Europe in some 150 solo shows and 100 group exhibits. Throughout her lifetime, Grandma Moses produced about 2,000 paintings. Her style was admired for its purity of colour, its attention to detail, and its aliveness.

As a writer, I work best under deadlines (截止日期). But sometimes, deadlines, family needs, and other demands make my brain spin (旋转) so much that I feel sick. I can’t get the words out or form sentences. The stress of it all makes being creative impossible.
Here lies the conundrum: stress impacts our ability to be creative, but being creative can help reduce stress. In fact, some tension can be the inspiration for beautiful acts of creation.
It’s a balancing act, explains Dr. Radwa Khalil from the Constructor University Bremen, Germany. She explains that how we think about stress is like making two judgments. First, we decide if a situation is threatening or challenging. Then, we look at what resources we have to cope (应对) with it.
Importantly, if the things we feel we need to deal with are more than what we can address, we hit a tipping point. If not addressed, Dr. Khalil says, “This can lead to anxiety, depression, or burnout. This matches the idea that there is a limit, and if stress goes beyond that limit, it becomes harmful. The key is not to allow ourselves to get to this point, but where it lies varies from person to person, which is why we need individual tools to help. Ways of coping can be helpful or harmful, and often develop through a mix of personal experiences, social interactions, and environmental factors.”
We can easily add creativity to our daily lives. Dr. Belynder Walia, a psychotherapist, says creativity can help you slow down and change focus. Free writing can slow down racing thoughts, and coloring can make you feel more relaxed. It’s like giving your mind something new to do when you’re stressed.
However, you might need to calm your body down from fight-or-flight condition before any kind of creativity is possible. She suggests: “Simple grounding techniques like breathing deeply, splashing cold water on your face, or gently shaking your arms and legs can signal to your nervous system that you’re safe. Creativity can take over once tension starts to die down, helping you process what’s left.”

My two sisters and I used to roll our eyes at each other when our parents would call us all up for family dinner. Why would we want to spend our evenings with our parents and whole family at the dinner table We felt like it was pointless or boring. Now as a 29-year-old adult, I realize how important these family dinners were for children.
Research shows that regular meals as a family positively affect self-esteem (自尊), academic performance, and the overall well-being of children. It is important to note that brain development in youth ages 9-17 is at a highly sensitive stage. Self-worth and identities are forming at this age. So people should sit down as a family to connect a few times a week — especially if you apply a“no phone” policy. It has been noted that parents play the most critical role in helping a child build his self-esteem.
Connection is an interesting word these days. It means different things to different people, especially with increased smartphone usage. These devices technically “connect” people, but to what extent when compared to in-person interactions
Although it is unavoidable that our children will at some point be on social media, we, as adults, have to step in and find ways to engage with youth in real-time, especially because social media is designed to keep users constantly engaged. When children are at such a critical time with brain development, this can lead to their addictive behaviors.
Even if you as a parent receive countless eye rolls at the dinner table, I want you to rethink and remember how valuable the dinner time is. Just the fact that you are sitting there with them will model how to be present, and the importance of in-person connection and communication with loved ones. These little moments have a big impact and can lead to emotional health with your children.
12. How did the author introduce the topic of the text
A. By analyzing cause and effect.
B. By offering some practical advice.
C. By mentioning her own experience.
D. By comparing the lives of different people.
13. Why are families advised to gather several times a week
A. It is helpful for children’s brain development.
B. It is the parents’ responsibility to serve the family.
C. It is joyful for parents to enjoy children’s company.
D. It is necessary for parents to monitor children's phones.
14. What makes it hard for children to self-control their use of the Internet
A. The design of social media.
B. Too much time with nothing to do.
C. Teaching methods in their schools.
D. The absence of parents’ management.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Various modes of family interaction.
B. Influence of social media on teenagers.
C. Critical time for children’s development.

The moment my son Joe knew I was going to have another baby, he tried his best to stay out of our lives. By the time our daughter Molly was due to be born, I had grown accustomed to his embarrassment and animosity (敌意). I had grown accustomed to a lot of things, not the least of which was having an unexpected child at the age of thirty-nine. My husband, to his eternal credit, was delighted. Throughout it all, Joe rarely spoke to me, except to say, “You don’t have to come to my school,” and — after a marathon baby naming conference—“Call her Molly, the name of my friend’s dog.”
When Molly finally arrived, tiny, quiet and perfect, four family arms were there to draw her close. But Joe’s remained tightly crossed over his chest, on the far side of the hospital room I signed to him to come closer but he shook his head slightly. I could see him standing there, arms still folded, staring straight ahead.
Joe stayed away at a friend’s cottage when Molly and I came home from the hospital. He was still gone ten days later when I took our daughter for her first check-up. He arrived home just as I was coming back, tears streaming down my face. “The doctor thinks she might have a hearing problem,” I sobbed. “She’s too quiet she’s not responding like she should. We have to have her tested.”
As my husband comforted me, downplaying my worry, I noticed that Joe had stopped beside the baby, sound asleep in her car seat. He reached out to her, shifting her slightly away from a bump (隆起) in the carpet. “She’s okay,” he said, looking down at her. “There’s nothing wrong with her. She’s just little.”
Three months later as I walked the floor at 4:00 A. M. with a crying and inconsolable (难以安抚的) (and otherwise perfectly healthy) baby in my arms, I dragged myself into Joe’s room and woke him up “Joe, could you take her Just for a few minutes I can’t settle her down, Dad’s on business, and I just really need a break.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Seeing Molly sleeping peacefully in Joe’s bed, I walked out, followed by Joe.

【答案】 Saying nothing, Joe took his little sister from me. He laid her gently on his bed, tightly rewrapping her blanket. Putting her over his shoulder, he patted her back and spoke to her softly. He acted so skillfully. Miraculously, Molly stopped crying immediately and became quiet. I watched in amazement as my son, who had been so distant and cold towards me, became a loving and caring big brother. Tears welling up in my eyes, I breathed a sigh of relief. It didn't take long for Molly to fall asleep.
Seeing Molly sleeping peacefully in Joe’s bed, I walked out, followed by Joe. “Thank you, Joe.” I said with my eyes fixed on his little face. “Molly is lovely.” Joe responded shyly. “I’m sorry that I didn’t welcome her as our new family member at first.” Joe apologized. He explained to me by saying he was worried Molly might take parental love away from him. I hugged him tightly and told him it was normal to think that way and assured him that nobody could replace him in Mom’s and Dad’s hearts.
