When I was 17, I experienced a week of challenges: I failed my driving test, a snowstorm canceled my flight to visit my dad, and I was rejected (拒绝) from the University of Oxford — not once, but five times. Letters arrived at my home, school, and inbox, all saying the same sad thing. Standing in my hallway, I tore open the final letter, sat on the floor, and cried. It was my first big failure, and it hit me hard.
The rejection itself wasn’t the hardest part — it was the embarrassment (尴尬). As a young girl, I had built up the idea of attending Oxford in my mind, believing it was the only path to success. When I didn’t get in, I felt like I had let myself and everyone else down. I had created this pressure (压力) completely on my own, believing that Oxford was the “be-all and end-all” and that anything else was second-rate.
Looking back, I realized I had been a big fish in a small pond. At school, I excelled, but when I competed against the best students in the country during my Oxford interviews, I struggled (感到吃力). The French grammar test was a mess, and my interviews didn’t go well either. When I listed Le Petit Prince as my favourite French book, the interviewer questioned whether it counted as literature. I felt embarrassed and couldn’t explain my choice.
After weeks of sadness, I decided to move forward. I accepted an offer from the University of Nottingham, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. Without the pressure to prove myself, I did well. I worked hard, joined student theatre and TV networks, built strong friendships, and enjoyed my time there.
My Oxford rejection taught me an important lesson: Failure doesn’t define you. Sometimes, what feels like a challenge can lead to unexpected chances. Nottingham gave me the freedom to be myself, and I’ve never looked back.
4. How many challenges did the author experience during the week
A. One. B. Three. C. Five. D. Six.
5. Where was the author’s pressure mainly from
A. Herself. B. Her family. C. Her teachers. D. Her friends.
6. Why did the author struggle during the Oxford interviews
A. She felt nervous. B. She was not well-prepared.
C. She had strong competitors. D. She was weak at her school subjects.
7. What lesson can we learn from the author’s experience
A. Freedom is priceless. B. Choice is greater than hard work.
C. Something bad may turn out good. D. Failure is the mother of success.
C
Many teenagers love to sleep, their curtains (窗帘) staying closed until midday — maybe because they didn’t get to bed until long after midnight the night before! That might be OK on weekends and during holidays. But what about when they need to get up for school or work The answer may be making sure they get enough sunlight early in the day, according to a new study.
Researchers in Brazil studied 35 teenagers over seven days, including five school days. Their movement, sleep and exposure (曝光) to light were monitored (监视) with tools on their wrists. The researchers recorded levels of light exposure at four different times during the day. The students also reported whether they considered themselves “early birds” or “night owls”.
During the time of the study, there were between 12 and 13 hours of daylight in Brazil. The study found that teenagers who were exposed to more light during the day usually went to sleep earlier and wake up earlier. And teenagers who were exposed to brighter light — especially during the early part of the day — fell asleep about eight minutes earlier and woke up about seven minutes earlier. Unsurprisingly, the teenagers usually went to sleep later and sleep longer on days when they weren’t at school.
Of course, because they were both going to sleep earlier and waking up earlier, the students exposed to more light weren’t getting much more sleep. But the researchers said it is important to know about how daytime activities can influence nighttime sleep patterns (模式). And experts say it’s not just the amount of sleep that matters, but also the quality (质量) of that sleep.
However, the researchers noted that the study was not able to prove that exposure to light was the reason for the differences in the students’ sleep patterns — their sleep could also have been influenced by the different activities they did during the day.
8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To draw readers’ interest. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To explain a common problem. D. To set off a discussion.
9. How did the researchers collect information in the study
A. By using tools. B. By interviewing teenagers.
C. By asking parents for help. D. By comparing different sleep patterns.
10. What changes might happen if teens spent more mornings outdoors
A. Their total sleep time would be less.
B. They would feel less tired during the day.
C. They would sleep much longer than usual.
D. Their bedtime and wake-up time would become earlier.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. All teenagers naturally prefer to wake up early.
B. Daytime activities may also influence teenagers’ sleep quality.
C. Teenagers who sleep late on weekends will perform worse in school.
D. Light exposure is the biggest factor changing teenagers’ sleep patterns.
D
The Red River Delta matters in the development of Vietnam. As the country’s second-largest rice-growing area, it produces about 15 — 20% of Vietnam’s rice and is home to 17 million people living on its 16,500 km of land. The delta’s lifeblood is the Red River, which comes from a big catchment area (汇水区) of about 169,000 km , half of which is in China. While the river brings rich alluvium (冲积土) and water resources, floods (洪水) happen often because trees are cut and mud builds up, putting the area’s growing business in trouble, especially the capital Hanoi.
To protect low-lying areas, the Vietnamese built a network of dykes (堤). Historical records show the first large-scale dyke was built in 1108 under King Ly Nhan Tong to protect Thang Long (now Hanoi). Today, the 3,000-km dyke system is crucial for flood control, with experts and volunteers watching it during the June — October flood season, when water levels can rise 4-8 metres above ground.
In addition to the dyke system, upstream, multi-purpose reservoirs (多用途水库) like Hoa Binh and Thac Ba store flood water, cutting the danger downstream. These reservoirs, which also produce power, can hold up to 5.4 billion cubic metres of water. New reservoirs being built will further improve flood protection.
When dykes and reservoirs can’t hold the water, floodwater goes into the Day River, which can take 5,000 m of water per second. Additional areas like Tam Thanh are used only in serious times. Cleaning rivers works, but costs too much to do regularly.
Planting and protecting upstream forests is a long-term solution, as forests draw floodwaters and protect the environment. The Vietnamese government has increased forest cover through actions, though this takes time.
12. What has caused trouble to the Red River Delta
A. Loss of farmland. B. Human activities.
C. Business slowdown. D. Poor water resources.
13. What does the underlined word “crucial” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Important. B. Huge. C. Easy. D. New.
14. What are the Hoa Binh and Thac Ba reservoirs used to do
A. Create tourist attractions.
B. Produce electricity for nearby cities.
C. Provide drinking water for local communities.
D. Store floodwater and lower downstream risks.
15 Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The History of Dyke Building in Vietnam
B. Rice Farming in Vietnam’s Red River Delta
C. The Red River Delta: Flood Challenges and Solutions
D. Business Growth and Environmental Problems in Hanoi

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a warm September afternoon when Lila stormed into her bedroom. Angry, she threw her schoolbag onto the bed. The fight with her mother, which she had been preparing for all week, had finally started.
“Mum just doesn’t get it!” Lila thought. The fight began over a simple invitation: a weekend camping trip with classmates. She’d been looking forward to it for weeks. But her mother refused it at once, with safety concerns and the fact that Lila had never gone camping.
“I’m not a kid anymore!” Lila shouted. “All my friends are going! Why can’t you trust me ” Her mother said, “I do trust you, but camping in the woods is different. So many dangers — getting lost, injured. I just want you safe.”
Those words hurt. Lila felt misunderstood, like a toy instead of a capable teen. Lila lying on her bed, tears welled up. She loved her mother, but communication felt impossible. At school the next day, Lila was blue all day. Sitting alone at lunch, she pushed food around her plate until Ethan, a classmate, joined her.
“Bad day ” he asked with a half-smile. “Everything okay ” Lila hesitated (犹豫),then poured out everything about the trip and her mother’s over-protectiveness. Ethan listened, nodding. “My dad was the same when I tried new things. But their protectiveness comes from love, even if it feels uncomfortable.”
Lila rolled her eyes. “Easy for you — your dad let you join soccer.” “Only after I proved I could manage it,” Ethan said. “Maybe talk to your mum differently. Explain why the trip matters to you and how you’ll be careful.”
His words made sense. Lila realised she’d thought her mother was being unreasonable, too scared to let go. As an only child, her mother had always protected her.
That evening, Lila wrote a letter. She shared her excitement about the trip, her hope to make lasting memories, and her understanding of her mother’s fears. She promised to prioritize(优先考虑)safety, make daily calls, and ended with love and thanks.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next morning, she handed the letter nervously.

14. What are the Hoa Binh and Thac Ba reservoirs used to do
A. Create tourist attractions.
B. Produce electricity for nearby cities.
C. Provide drinking water for local communities.
D. Store floodwater and lower downstream risks.

【答案】
Dear Miss Lori,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our School English Weekly. I strongly suggest choosing “Fun English Words” as the theme.
The main reason is that it can make learning English more enjoyable. As we all know, many students find memorizing English words a tough task. But if we introduce words in a fun way, like through interesting stories or funny examples, students will be more willing to learn. What’s more, this column, which can provide a platform for students to share their own discoveries about fun words, will enhance our learning enthusiasm.
I believe it will bring a lot of benefits to our English learning.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】
The next morning, she handed the letter nervously. Her hands trembled slightly as she placed it on the kitchen table, where her mother was sipping her coffee. Her mother glanced up, surprised, and then picked up the letter. As she read, her expression softened, and a gentle smile spread across her face. When she finished, she looked at Lila with eyes filled with understanding and love. “I’m sorry, Lila,” she said softly. “I didn’t realize how much this trip meant to you. I’ll allow you to go, but you must promise to be careful and keep in touch.” Lila’s heart swelled with joy as she nodded eagerly, feeling a newfound sense of connection with her mother.
From then on, they agreed to talk more and shout less. They set aside time each week to sit down and discuss Lila’s plans, dreams, and concerns. Her mother listened attentively, offering advice and support without being overbearing. Lila, in turn, shared her thoughts and feelings openly, knowing that her mother was there to listen and understand. Their relationship blossomed into one of mutual respect and trust. Lila learned that communication was the key to resolving conflicts and building stronger bonds. And her mother realized that letting go a little was necessary for Lila to grow into a confident and independent young woman.
