When I suggested my 13-year-old try tennis, she quickly shot me down. “I’m not sporty; stop trying to get me to do sports,” Julianna said. I had suggested it because some of my happiest recent memories were of playing ping-pong with her. Tennis seemed like a natural progression from ping-pong and a great way to work out some of her growing teen frustrations on a larger playing field. But my suggestion was always met with resistance.
Still, I was undeterred. I was pretty sure that releasing (释放) some physical energy would help Julianna manage her emotions. I’ve seen how sports help with stress. It worked for me when I was a teenage girl. Midway into summer, we stayed at home due to COVID-19, and Julianna and I grew really bored. “Do you want to play tennis ” I asked her at lunch one afternoon. “Sure,” she said. By then, we were both eager to spend as much time as possible out of the house. Arriving at the court, we set down our bags, picked up our rackets (球拍), and headed to our sides of the court. The net felt like the visual representation of a growing divide between us — I desiring connection and my teenage daughter longing for independence.
I started by hitting a ball over the net, and Julianna took a big swing and missed. We repeated this several more times. I resisted the urge (冲动) to tell she was holding the racket too close to the neck or to step more into her forehand (正手). My daughter wanted the chance to figure these things out for herself. And I needed to practice letting her do it. We repeated the pattern of me hitting the ball and her missing it a few times before she finally got it back over the net. “This is fun,” she said with a mixture of surprise and delight and then she smiled widely.
Now we always find time to play tennis. It’s nice to have a place where both of us can release our negative emotions and let them go.
4. Why did the author persuade her daughter to play tennis
A. They had a good time playing tennis together.
B. She wanted her daughter to be a sporty person.
C. It would help her daughter make more like-minded friends.
D. It would be good for her daughter’s emotional management.
5. What does the underlined word “undeterred” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Not confused. B. Not determined.
C Not discouraged. D. Not surprised.
6. What did the author do when her daughter missed the ball
A. She stood close to the net.
B. She repeated hitting the ball.
C. She changed ends with her daughter.
D. She instructed her daughter immediately.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. I Encourage My Daughter to Be Independent
B. I Inspire My Daughter to Express Her Emotions
C. Tennis Helps Me Understand My Teenage Daughter
D. My Daughter and I Find Some Peace on the Tennis Court
C
Here’s a new idea: Adding zigzags (锯齿形) to walls could help cool an overheated building, even as global temperatures rise. Researchers devised a new electricity-free standing wall design that cools buildings more efficiently than conventional walls, reducing daily average wall temperatures by a couple degrees Celsius, reported August 9 in Nexus.
Buildings currently consume about 40 percent of global energy and account for over a third of global carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, mostly from energy-intensive air conditioning. Researchers seek designs to redirect solar energy and reduce this load.
Most “radiative cooling” focuses on roofs to absorb solar energy and radiate it into space, but university materials scientist Yuan Yang notes that walls are harder to cool due to space exposure and ground heat absorption. Thus, an effective design must account for both factors.
Hence: zigzag walls. Yang’s team assumed that by wrinkling the upright surface and coating the parts with different materials—more reflective materials facing downward and more heat-releasing materials facing upward—the wall could absorb less heat than a conventional straight wall.
Simulation (模拟) showed that zigzag walls gained less heat from the ground than conventional walls by about 2.3 degrees on average, rising to 3.1 degrees during the hottest part of the day. Testing a miniature backyard version of their design in New Jersey in summer 2022 found similar results.
The goal was to design something that would be commercially appealing, Yang says. Wrinkled walls already exist, he notes. Therefore, this design, easy to produce and expand, may provide consumers with a solution to zig when the climate zags.
8. What can be learned about zigzag walls from Paragraph 1
A. They help cool buildings.
B. They consume electricity.
C. They are conventional walls.
D They rise with global temperatures.
9. Why does the author mention roofs
A. To explain a cooling method.
B. To compare with zigzag walls.
C. To show roofs are easier to cool.
D. To emphasize the importance of walls.
10. How did Yang’s team make zigzag walls less heat-absorbing
A. By using reflective roofs.
B. By coating with same materials.
C By wrinkling and coating differently.
D. By facing heat-releasing materials downward.
11. What is implied in the last paragraph
A. The design is hard to produce.
B. Wrinkled walls are not popular.
C. Consumers prefer straight walls.
D. The design may be commercialized.

In a recent unusual experiment, researchers attached a large pair of cartoonist round eyes to the front of a small, self-driving vehicle. This pair of eyes on the front of driverless vehicles could give pedestrians (行人) a better idea of whether they’ve been seen by the vehicles. That is quite important for pedestrians when it comes to determining the perfect moment to cross in front of oncoming traffic.
In the study, the volunteers — nine men and nine women — were asked to decide whether or not to cross the road as the car approached. Four situations were tested in total; two when the car was fitted with eyes, and two when it wasn’t. The researchers measured how often people hesitated to cross when it was in fact safe to do so, and how often they chose to cross when it was dangerous. Overall, the presence of the eyes led to safer and smoother road-crossing experiences for the participants.
However, there was a clear difference between genders in the results. For men, the eyes only really helped in dangerous situations, warning them to pause when they might otherwise proceed. For women, the eyes boosted confidence by signaling it was safe to cross. While other factors like age and background might have also influenced the participants’ reactions, the researchers believe this is an important point, as it shows that different road users may have different behaviors and needs, which require different communication ways in our future self-driving world.
Ultimately, the aim is to keep everyone as safe as possible, if and when autonomous driving becomes the norm (常态). At the moment, it seems that is a long way off yet — giving scientists more time to look at the effect. “There is not enough investigation into the interaction between self-driving cars and the people around them, such as pedestrians,” says computer scientist Takeo Igarashi. “So, we need more investigation and effort into such interaction to bring safety and assurance to society regarding self driving cars.”
12. What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Assessing if pedestrians are aware of road conditions.
B. Making self-driving vehicles more visually appealing.
C. Knowing if moving vehicles notice pedestrians’ presence.
D. Keeping enough distance between vehicles and pedestrians.
13. What effect did the cartoonish eyes have on participants according to the study
A. Participants’ improved road crossing behavior. B. Participants’ tendency to ride in driverless cars.
C. Researchers accurate measurement of car speed. D. Researchers ability to predict pedestrian behavior.
14. What lesson can makers of self-driving vehicles learn from this study
A. They need to improve the visibility of their vehicles.
B. They need to enhance the safety measures in their vehicles.
C. They need to adopt diverse communication methods in their design.
D. They need to make vehicles affordable to people from all walks of life.
15. What might be Takeo Igarashi’s attitude to the study
A. Disapproving. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Subjective.

Returning from vacation and attempting to get back into a productive routine can feel like a tough task. Here are strategies to help you get back to an academic mindset.
____16____
You may have felt stressed or burnt out before your holiday, so it makes sense to change your schedule when you return and adapt yourself to it. A great place to start is to assess food, exercise, and sleep habits, which can tend to go bad over a vacation.
Create a study schedule
____17____ Whether you prefer to use a traditional planner or an online calendar or app, begin by going through your course syllabi (提纲) and inputting project, test, and exam due dates. As you are scheduling your studies, be sure to consider which courses, readings and projects you anticipate will be more challenging, so you can devote extra time appropriately.
Start small
When you return from vacation, allow yourself the adjustment period to ease back into your coursework. It’s not realistic to try and jump into your studies at the same pace you were at before you left, as it can lead to sluggishness (反应迟钝) and burnout. ____18____ Doing so can generate an immediate sense of satisfaction that fuels your motivation to keep going.
Take time to de-stress
Research has shown that taking purposeful breaks of 5 to 60 minutes when studying increases productivity, energy, and ability to focus. Some examples include taking a walk, having a 15-minute nap, organizing your study area, listening to your favourite music, playing with your pet, or connecting with a friend. ____19____
Set up a reward system
As a learner, you should have a specific objective that motivates you to enhance your education. Setting up a reward system can also be helpful. ____20____ Depending on your preference, you can set up daily, weekly, or monthly incentives (奖励) to help ensure that you stay inspired and on task.
A. Refresh your routine.
B. Avoid distractions and time-wasters.
C. Instead, focus on small, achievable daily tasks.
D. It encourages you to meet your individual study goals.

A few years ago, my family and I were driving back from our vacation in Florida to New York. At about 9 pm, after driving all day, we stopped at a Wendy’s restaurant in South Carolina. We were exhausted (筋疲力尽) from driving but still had a long way to go before we reached the hotel in Virginia where we had reservations for the night.
We ate, left, and continued driving. After about an hour and a half, when we had just crossed into Virginia, we realized that my husband had left his belt pack at the restaurant. I had only about $20 left in my wallet; my husband had the rest of our money and traveler’s checks (about $1,000) in his belt pack.
Even worse, the remote control for his spinal cord stimulator (脊髓刺激器) was in the pack, and he needed it to manage his back pain. I had no idea how many thousands of dollars it would cost to replace it.
Without much hope, we turned around and drove back to South Carolina. I never really expected to get our money or traveler’s checks back, but I hoped we could get back the remote for my husband’s stimulator. As I was driving back, my mind was overwhelmed with the stress of canceling credit cards and figuring out how we were going to make it home on just $20.
We watched all the exit signs on Highway I-95 for one that included a Wendy’s. The first one we tried was the wrong restaurant. So was the second. After a few more exits and three hours of driving, we finally found the right Wendy’s.
The restaurant had already closed for the night, but a young waiter was still inside cleaning up. We knocked on the door and explained our situation, and he let us in.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150字左右;
(2) 请按如下格式作答。
To our relief, the young waiter kept the belt pack safe!

Start small

The Value of Face-to-Face Communication
With the development of technology, the ways that we communicate with each other change a lot. As for it, different people have different opinions.
Some believe that online communication allow people to connect instantly regardless of distance. However, some still argue that face-to-face communication is irreplaceable, because non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions and body language is quite important, which help to build trust and understanding.
In my opinion, face-to-face communication holds unique value. It fosters deeper emotional connections and reduces misunderstandings. Therefore, while online tools are useful, we should not underestimate the power of in-person interactions.

【答案】One possible version:
To our relief, the young waiter kept the belt pack safe! He handed it to us, explaining another waiter spotted it and handed it to him. I could hardly believe my eyes. Everything was there — the money, the traveler’s checks, and most importantly, the remote control. My husband tightly held the young man’s hands, unable to speak due to his gratitude. My earlier anxiety disappeared, replaced by deep relief. When we offered a reward to the young man, he refused with a shy smile, saying, “I just did what everyone should do.”
The young waiter warmly guided us out of the restaurant with a flashlight. “Thank you so much for your help,” I said, still in awe. The young man smiled warmly, “It’s my pleasure. I’m just happy to return it to you.” The warm light guided us through the dark to our car. As we said goodbye, his kindness shone brighter than the flashlight. “Safe travels!” he called out. Driving away, we felt peaceful and hopeful, not tense anymore. That unexpected help made the rest of our journey home feel lighter. This honest young man turned a terrible night into a powerful example of human goodness.
