Maya Merhige is making her major waves in swimming. She is now the third-youngest person to complete an athletic challenge known as the Triple Crown. At the age of 16, she swam 23 miles across the English Channel in the UK with a time of 11 hours, 39 minutes.
Merhige had already completed the other two Triple Crown swims. At age 14, with a time of 10 hours, 48 minutes, she became the youngest female to swim the 20-mile Catalina Channel in California. The next year, she completed the 20 Bridges swim in New York City, a distance of 28.5 miles, in 8 hours, 43 minutes.
Open-water swimming became her passion at age 9 when she got involved with Swim Across America, a nonprofit organization that funds cancer research. “I’ve been feeling as I’ve gotten older that nearly everyone is touched by cancer, and it’s become more important for me to raise money for this cause,” Merhige, now 17, told The Week Junior. Since she started, she has raised more than $100,000.
One of her favorite swims was crossing the 28-mile Ka’iwi Channel in Hawaii. She swam it at age 15, making her the youngest person to do so. It took her more than 27 hours to complete it, and she faced strong winds and jellyfish.
Although the physical and mental challenges of her sport are difficult, Merhige says her greatest fear is not finishing a swim. Now she sets her sights on completing the Oceans Seven by 2029, and with her Triple Crown swims, she has four more to go. As she considers the journey ahead, Merhige said it helps to “constantly remind myself to stay in the moment.”

A. Determined and kind. B. Ambitious and clever.

Every year around August, millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes for the start of the school year. Not every parent can afford this, and some teens are forced to go to school in the same clothes they wore last year. The obvious differences in clothes cause differences among students. There is a simple solution to this problem: school uniforms (校服).
I know from personal experience and surveys that wearing uniforms creates a sense of equality among peers (同龄人).
From sixth grade until I graduated from senior high school, I attended a school that required students to wear uniforms. The uniform was very simple: dark brown shoes, green-brown pants, and a white shirt. The uniform left little room for any kind of self-expression, especially through clothes.
However, I learned how to stand out by expressing myself through my personality, art, and sports. I did not know I could draw until the sixth grade. I also would never have learned of my musical abilities if it hadn’t been for my desire to find ways to express myself. Uniforms taught me that I was myself, except what I wore.
Uniforms also contribute to a much safer learning environment. I remember a particular event that happened in my junior high school. A man ran away from prison and wanted to hide in the gym of our school. Luckily, cameras all over the school quickly found the stranger before any danger could ever happen as he was out of place. School officials kept the man locked inside our gym until the police came to take him back to prison.
Uniforms help provide a better educational experience for all students no matter what race, culture, or economic class (经济阶层). In closing, wearing uniforms is good for both schools and students.
8. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By explaining a basic rule. B. By challenging others’ views.
C. By describing a common problem. D. By sharing his parents’ experience.
9. Which of the following could the author agree with
A. Uniforms are bad for self-development. B. Uniforms should be more modern.
C. Uniforms can help shape better students. D. Uniforms are popular with students.
10. What do the underlined words “out of place” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Standing straight. B. Running fast. C. Breathing heavily. D. Dressing differently.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To introduce high school uniforms. B. To record his high school life.
C. To show his supportive view towards uniforms. D. To ask students to like what they wear.
D
“My favorite thing about hiking is that I get to work out my legs,” said Skylar, a six-year-old camper. “And I get to see the view!” Skylar is one of twenty kids participating in the week-long Gross Out Camp, a summer program hosted at parks and outdoor spaces across Alabama. “This is kids’ natural habitat out here in the woods,” said Verna Gates, who started Gross Out Camp 14 years ago.
As schools begin again across Alabama, most students are returning to days spent in indoor classrooms, but some will continue to learn and play outside, even while at school. It’s part of a growing movement to teach kids in nature and help them connect with their environment.
In recent years, at least three nature preschools, or forest schools, have been opened across Alabama. They operate almost entirely outside. In these forest schools, students gain knowledge from every activity. The class might discover a turtle walking along the forest floor at the Kreher Preserve Nature Center, where the school is located. That offers an opportunity for students to talk about the animal’s shape and color, and write about their discovery.
After starting Woodland Wonders in 2019, Gates said word spread quickly. The school has since added classes and programs for older kids, but they can’t keep up with demand. It’s a similar case at Little Mountain Forest School, where kids learn and play at Monte Sano State Park. Co-founder Beth Barry said that both kids and parents love the natural space.
Fellow co-founder and co-director Sarah Callaway said the most common question is about the weather. They spend a lot of time reviewing proper clothing, because students are outside rain or shine. “As a forest school parent, it can be a pain in the behind to have to deal with your muddy and wet kid,” Callaway said. “But the kids love it. Those are some of the best days.”
12. What can we learn about the summer program Gross Out Camp
A. It’s for outdoor lovers in Alabama. B. It’s for kids to learn about the environment.
C. It’s for students to protect habitats. D. It’s for kids to participate in outdoor activities.
13. What is the main focus of forest schools in Alabama
A. Teaching kids about the weather and proper clothing.
B. Providing opportunities for outdoor play and learning.
C. Offering programs to older kids in the natural space.
D. Creating an environment for kids to make friends.
14. What is the parents’ attitude to Woodland Wonders
A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Hiking: The Best Way to Exercise B. Wood Wonders: Travel in Forests
