A
I think a close friend is someone you get on well with, who helps you when you have problems, who gives you advice, and who always has time for you. I didn't use to have many close friends when I was at school because I was very shy,but now I have several. They are all women. I think it's difficult to have a close friend of the opposite sex(异性).
---Marie
I think a close friend is someone who you've known for a long time, and who you still get on with. They have similar hobbies to you so you can do things together. I've got three close friends who I was at middle school with and we often go out together (without our parents of course). We often go camping, play football,or walk outside in the open air.
---David
I'm not sure how to answer the question because I don't really have any close friends. I know a lot of people but mainly through work, and the social occasions(场合) when we meet are business dinners, things like that. I think if you come from a really close family, friends are a bit unnecessary. I like spending my free time with my family.
---Richard
For me close friends are the people you spend your free time with. I go out at weekends with a group of people, and they are all my close friends. They're also people who live near me. I don't think you can have close friends at a distance because you need to be able to see each other often. But I don't think you need to be doing the same things. I mean I'm at school but none of my friends are.
---Anna
1. Who doesn’t think women and men can be close friends
A. Marie. B. David.
C. Richard. D. Anna.
2 What does Richard say about friends
A. They need to have much in common.
B. They’re less important than family.
C. They must work in the same place.
D. They come from social occasions.
3. What do we know about Anna’s friends
A. They are all women.
B. They all do the same things.
C. They do not live far away.
D. They are all college students.

I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My grandfather was the one who taught me and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My grandfather told me to just put my feet on the pedals (脚蹬子) and start cycling. He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn’t.
As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let the bike go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from cycling, and I just wanted off. I forgot how to use the brakes (车闸) and fell right off the bike. My grandfather kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.
As soon as I started riding again, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face and hit my nose. My grandfather decided to call it a day and try again the next morning. The next morning I woke up brightly and early, and was very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn’t that afraid of falling anymore.
Despite the fact that I knew there were a range of difficulties on the way to mastering the skills in riding a bike, I believed I could do well with my grandfather’s help. After all, riding a bike was indeed what I wanted to do eagerly.

A. Remember what happened this day. B. Make the author feel happy.

6. What is the author’s attitude towards his grandfather
A. Grateful. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.
7. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage
A. The First Time I Got My Own Bike

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers (青少年). But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut.” Joann a noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14- year- old daughter. “She used to cuddle up (蜷伏) with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something, sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first on the list.” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years.” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.

A. is always busy with his studies
B. doesn’t want to be disturbed
C. keeps himself away from his parents

A. their daughter isn’t as lovely as before
B. they can’t read their daughter’s mind exactly
C. they don’t know what to say to their daughter
D. their daughter talks with them only when she needs help
10. Which of the following best explains” the wall of silence” in the last paragraph
A. Teenagers talk a lot with their friends.
B. Teenagers do not want to understand their parents.
C. Teenagers do not talk much with their parents.
D. Teenagers talk little about their own lives.
11. What can be learned from the passage
A. Parents are unhappy with their growing children.
B. Parents have suitable ways to talk with their teenagers.
C. Parents should be patient with their silent teenagers.
D. Parents should try to understand their teenagers.

Reviving old friendships is extremely beneficial. But according to a new study, we often hesitate (犹豫) to start those reconnections. The study surveyed almost 2,500 participants (参与者). Over 90% of the participants could think of a friend with whom they had lost touch and would like to speak again. However, even when participants expressed wanting to reconnect and were given time to write a message, only about 1/3 sent the message.
The researchers tried to encourage connection by mentioning research showing messages from old friends are often well-received. But this did little to improve the situation — the number of participants who sent messages remained low. The researchers realized they needed to be creative. Their new strategy had one group of participants practice with a warm-up — spending three minutes writing messages to their current (现在的) friends, while another group spent three minutes looking through social media. Then, everyone was asked to send a message to an old friend. The practice task proved successful: 53% of those who “warmed up” sent the message. Only 31% of those in the social media group reached out to an old friend.
Why is this such a problem that we need to warm up to deal with Over time, old friends can start to feel like strangers, explains researcher Aknin. Our sense of distance and fear of awkwardness make us hesitate. Actually, people will appreciate it more than you expect. Peggy, a psychologist, found that we often underestimate (低估) how much other people appreciate us reaching out.
When people move away, they meet different people and experience different things. That’s what makes running into someone you haven’t seen for a long time so interesting — you might hear about something new and cool. So if you are thinking about reaching out to an old friend, go for it. It’s worth doing. Hesitant You could start with a warm-up similar to the one in the study. You’d be surprised by how excited people would be to reconnect.
12. What problem was found in most participants in the study
A. They lost some friends’ contact information.
B. They were unwilling to revive old friendships.
C. They were not certain why to contact old friends.
D. They failed to contact old friends when given a chance.
13. What measure did the researchers take that improved the participants’ behavior
A. Making them practice contacting friends.
B. Showing them positive examples of reconnection.
C. Letting them follow their friends on social media.
D. Teaching them how to write messages to old friends.
14. How might people feel when being contacted by old friends
A. Annoyed. B. Thankful. C. Impatient. D. Shocked.
15. Why does the author write the last paragraph
A. To stress the value of friendships. B. To show the importance of the study.
C. To call on people to contact old friends. D. To encourage people to learn from friends.
