Discover Yichang in 48 Hours: Dams, Gorges and Tasty Foods
Yichang, a lively city in Hubei Province along the Yangtze River, is known as the “gateway to the Three Gorges (峡谷)”. It’s a popular travel place for natural beauty and amazing man-made projects. The most famous attractions here are the “Two Dams and One Gorge” — The Three Gorges Dam, Gezhouba Dam, and Xiling Gorge. Here, the Yangtze River shows its amazing beauty, mixing big and beautiful views with special culture.
A Yangtze trip by boat is a must for your 48-hour trip. Take an electric boat up the river — it’s quiet and good for the environment. As the boat moves, you’ll first see Gezhouba Dam, an early example of China’s large water projects. Then the Three Gorges Dam comes into sight; its huge building and passing ships will surprise you. During the boat trip, you can also enjoy Xiling Gorge’s views: green mountains stand on both sides, and clear water flows slowly, like a living picture. For culture lovers, the Three Gorges Tribe (部落) is something you can’t miss. It keeps the Tujia people’s traditional way of life. Tujia girls sing folk songs by the river; their clear voices mix with the water’s sound, creating peace. Sometimes, you can join their dances or watch them make bamboo handmade things, getting close to ancient Ba-Chu culture (巴楚文化).
Local foods are another great part here. The old street has many small stands and restaurants. Hand-pulled noodles are popular — cooks pull dough (面团) into thin noodles, served with fresh soup. Hot red oil buns are tasty; when you bite into them, you’ll taste hot and nice-smelling oil. Crispy radish dumplings are great snacks. On hot days, cold shrimp jelly is refreshing — it’s smooth and has a light seafood taste. Our host Robert (Baozi), who has lived in Yichang for five years, will lead your trip. He knows the best time to visit each place and the most delicious food stands. In 48 hours, you’ll see big and beautiful dams, beautiful gorges, feel warm culture and taste delicious foods. Join him to find Yichang’s special beauty!

My family lost almost everything in the little-known but worst flood of Louisiana last year. It began raining in mid-August and didn’t stop for days. There was talk that the local rivers were going to crest (到达洪峰) and cause some serious flooding. We lived somewhat close to the Amite River, but old neighbors told us our neighborhood hadn’t flooded in over 100 years. We thought we had several days to plan on how to shelter.
On August 13, I woke up and headed toward the river. Some of the lower areas were collecting water but there was no standing water anywhere near my house or even my neighborhood. I went back home and told my wife we should probably get some supplies in case this got serious; that maybe we should even pack a car in case we needed to leave though I was very certain there was nothing to worry about.
About 30 minutes into slowly packing, my wife’s cousin came and told us to evacuate (撤离) at once. I looked behind her and noticed my entire yard underwater and the waterline only about a half-inch from going over my doorstep and into my house.
I was floored. We had no time! My wife and I packed up both our cars in about 10 minutes with only our most precious memories. Everything else we had built during a 10-year marriage was left behind. We evacuated about 5 miles east away from the river to my wife’s grandmother’s. After being there for about an hour, the river was coming. We evacuated a second time in as many hours to her cousin’s house even further east. After only an hour, we found the river was on the way and we had to leave, again.
We evacuated three times that day. I drove back through the flooded waters at some point because we left our cat. When I got back to our house, I walked through knee-deep water filled with trash and our waterlogged belongings (浸水的财物). Got the cat safely though.
4. Why did the writer slowly prepare to leave at first
A. Because he had to get his car repaired.
B Because he should wait for his wife’s cousin.
C. Because there were too many supplies.
D. Because no standing water appeared nearby.
5. What does the underlined word “floored” mean in paragraph 4
A. Amazed. B. Shocked. C. Confused. D. Satisfied.
6. What do you know about the flood according to the text
A. It has a long history. B. It caused much damage.
C. It is world-famous. D. It destroyed many villages.
7. The writer drove back home to in the last paragraph.
A. find his cat B. clear the trash
C. check his belongings D. rebuild the damaged house

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is the most trusted dictionary of the English language, but its creation was a great task that took over 70 years.
In 1857, a London language society decided that existing English dictionaries were not enough and suggested a completely new one. The project relied on volunteers to read English literature and collect example sentences for words on small pieces of paper. However, progress was very slow for the first two decades. In 1879, Oxford University Press agreed to publish the dictionary and James Murray was appointed editor. He restarted the volunteer program and built a small iron shed (棚), called the “Scriptorium”, in his garden to work on the project. He even paid his children to sort the millions of small pieces. At first, Murray thought the work would take 10 years. But after five years, the first section was published, covering only the words from “A” to “Ant” — it was clear that the dictionary would be much larger than anyone had imagined.
To speed up the work, three other editors were appointed to work with Murray. Each editor and their team worked on different sections of the alphabet. After decades of effort, the final volume (卷) was published in 1928. Sadly, Murray himself did not live to see the project completed. The final dictionary filled 10 volumes with over 250,000 words.
The English language never stops changing, so the OED is never finished. Soon after the first edition was completed, editors began working on a supplement (增补). In the 1980s, the dictionary entered the digital age. The entire text was typed into computers, leading to a 20-volume second edition in 1989. This was followed by a CD-ROM version (版本) and, in the year 2000, the OED Online was invented.
Today, the OED Online is updated every three months with new words and revised ones. What started as a great idea in the 19th century continues to grow, remaining the top record of the English language and its ongoing development.
8. Why was a new dictionary advised in 1857
A. Because James Murray hoped to become famous.
B. Because existing dictionaries couldn’t meet the need.
C. Because volunteers wanted to read more literature books.
D. Because Oxford University Press needed a new business project.
9. When was the first section from “A” to “Ant” finished
A. In 1857. B. In 1879. C. In 1884. D. In 1889.
10. How is paragraph 4 developed
A. In time order. B. In space order.
C. From questions to answers. D. From least to most important.
11. Which is probably the best title
A. Importance of Editors’ Teamwork B. Modern Development of the OED
C. History of the Oxford English Dictionary D. Hard Work and Devotion of James Murray
D
Do you remember the last time you took a language course When you finished the course, your language abilities were different from your classmates’.
These differences exist in every field. But in my field, the psychology (心理学) of second-language learning, one question remains unclear: why is it easier for some people to learn a new language than for others Recently, I was excited to learn that scientist Xiaoqian Chai and her team at McGill University have been studying this question. They looked at students in a 12-week French course and found big differences in how much each student improved.
For their study, the researchers scanned (扫描) the brains of native English speakers before the course started. They collected samples (样本) of the participants’ French speaking and reading before and after the course. The results showed that the strength of connections between different resting parts of a person’s brain could predict (预测) how much their specific (特定的) language skills would improve. Specifically, improvement in reading depended on the connection between the brain’s visual word-form area and another. Improvement in speaking, however, depended on the connection between the speech-related area and two other regions. For both skills, stronger brain connections before the course were linked to greater improvement after the training.
These findings lead to more questions: If brain connectivity predicts learning, how can we predict the connectivity itself I can’t help but connect this to research on bilingual (双语的) education, which shows that a strong first language is the key to learning a strong second language. So, the participants’ pre-existing English skills might have influenced their brain connections.
As we understand more about how the brain learns language, we can turn this knowledge into teaching techniques that play to each student’s strengths. The next generation of middle-schoolers is entering a more globalized world than ever, and they are going to need our help.
12. Why does the writer ask a question at the beginning of the text
A. To share a personal doubt. B. To challenge the reader.
C. To summarize a study. D. To introduce the topic.
13 How did Xiaoqian Chai and her team perform their study
A. By teaching students different memory skills.
B. By asking participants about their learning habits.
C. By scanning brains and collecting speech samples.
D. By comparing course grades from different schools.
14. What predicted language skill improvement in the study
A. The participants’ age and background. B. The intelligence level of the participants.
C. The amount of time spent in the classroom. D. The connections’ strength of the brain parts.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The application of the study. B. The ways of English learning.
C. The importance of globalization. D. The number of middle schoolers.

The last bell of the day rang at 4:30 p.m., but nobody in Class 3, Grade 10 ran home. Instead, we hurried to the playground, because today was the class basketball final. Our competition, Class 5, had beaten us twice last year. We wanted to win back our pride.
Our team had only seven players. The smallest was Leo, only 165 cm tall, but he could run like the wind. The tallest was Ken, 185 cm, who just learned basketball last winter. I, Jack, was the captain. My job was to pass the ball and keep everyone calm.
The sun was still high. As we changed our shoes, our P. E. teacher, Mr. Liu, came over. “Remember,” he said, “basketball is five people moving like one. Trust your teammates, and trust yourself.” We put our hands together and shouted, “One, two, three, fight!”
The game started. Within two minutes Class 5 scored four points. Their center, a strong boy nicknamed “Bear”, pushed Ken aside easily. On the bench our classmates began to sigh. I felt sweat in my hands.
Then something small changed the day. Leo stole the ball near our basket and passed it to me. I was about to shoot when I saw Ken running alone under the hoop (篮筐). I passed the ball to him. Ken jumped, scored, and the whole class exploded with cheers. 4 — 2. The score was still close, but now we believed we could play.
The second half was harder. Bear kept scoring, and with five minutes left we were behind 18 — 22. My legs were heavy, and Leo’s face was red like a tomato. During a time-out Mr. Liu simply said, “Keep moving. When you are tired, your friend is waiting.” He drew a quick arrow on his board: Leo would cut along the baseline, Ken would set a screen, and I would slip (溜走) to the weak side for the return pass. “Trust the pattern,” he added, tapping the board twice.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We stepped back onto the court with Mr. Liu’s simple words still in our ears.
