This is my hometown. Only a few hundred people live here, although there once were over a thousand living here. Many people are now working in cities. I know it doesn't look like much at first, but once you spend some time here, you'll see that there is a lot to do. One thing you won't find is tall buildings. In fact, I think there are only about a dozen buildings on Main Street in the center of town. There's a market and a couple of restaurants and bars. There is also a place to get your hair cut, a place to wash your clothes, and a school. But if you are seriously ill or want to buy a TV you have to go to the next little town over, which is five miles away. It's pretty quiet around here, and that's what local people like most about this place. There's a river where you can go fishing and a great mountain for climbing. But running around in the fields next to the forest is the most fun of all.
18.How many people are there in the speaker's hometown
A.A few thousand. B.A few hundred.
C.A few dozen.

19.Where can local people buy a TV

If you are crazy about paintings, you shouldn't miss the following four famous masterpieces which have stood the test of time.
The Arnolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck's The Arnolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth century society, through van Eyck's heavy use of symbolism—while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas (帆布), a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12 month stay at the mental hospital near Saint Rémy de Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh's most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black and white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title “Guernica” refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofaí in Madrid.

In every school there is a “top” crowd that sets the pace, while the others follow their lead. For example, the top crowd decides that it is smart to wear bright red sweaters. Very soon everybody is wearing a bright red sweater. There is nothing wrong with that, except the fact that bright red is not suitable on some people at all.
The situation can even become dangerous, if the top crowd decides that it is smart to drink or to drive cars at 70 miles an hour. Then the people who follow the lead are causing danger to people's lives. They are like sheep being led to the slaughterhouse (屠宰场).
Perhaps you have come across situations like these more than once in your life. In fact, at one time or another you probably did something you knew to be wrong. You may have excused yourself by saying, “The crowd does it.” Well, let the crowd do it, but don't do it yourself. Learn to say, “No”.
Make your own judge. If you know the crowd is planning something with which you disagree, please have the courage to leave them politely. You'll have the satisfaction of standing on your own feet.

Can you be too beautiful It is hardly a problem that most of us have to bother—as much as we might like to dream that it were the case.
Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long standing interest in psychology. Do those blessed with shiny faces and an attractive body live in a cloud of appreciation—or does it sometimes pay to be ordinary At the most basic level, beauty might be thought to carry a kind of halo (光环) around it; we see that someone has one good quality, and by association, our deep mind may assume that they have other good ones too.
But if beauty pays in most circumstances, there are still situations where it can have opposite results. While attractive men may be considered better leaders, for instance, hidden sexist prejudices (偏见) can work against attractive women, making them less likely to be hired for high level jobs that require power. And as you might expect, good looking people of both sexes run into envy—one study found that if you are interviewed by someone of the same sex, they may be less likely to employ you if they judge that you are more attractive than they are.
More worryingly, being beautiful or handsome could harm your medical care. We tend to link good looks to health, meaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect the good looking. When treating people for pain, for instance, doctors tend to take less care over the more attractive people.
To conclude, scientists point out that focusing too much on your appearance can itself be harmful if it creates stress and anxiety—even for those already blessed with good looks. “If you are crazy about attractiveness, it may affect your experience and interactions,” she says. It's an outdated saying, but no amount of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly: “Beauty__is__only__skin__deep,__but__ugly__goes__clean__to_
_the__bone.”
篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了美丽的好处和坏处,重点介绍了美丽的消极影响,还告诉我们不要过分关注自己的外表。

31.What might be the best title for the passage
A.What is Real Beauty
B.The Bad Effects of Beauty

D.Beauty, a Blessing
答案:D
解析:标题判断题。根据第二段第一句“Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long standing interest in psychology.(但是美丽带来的福祸一直是心理学研究的热点。)”并结合全文内容可知,本文讲的是虽然美丽会有光环效应,但很多时候,美丽会带来负面影响,因此D项(美丽,真的是福分吗?)适合作为文章标题。故选D。

I look in the mirror, and I'm not happy with what I see. I don't have a “perfect” face. I look in the magazines and all I see are girls with fair hair, blue eyes, and, of course, a pretty little nose. They're on the outside of the buses that I take home, the television programs I watch, and the billboards I walk under. Almost every advertisement I see shows this human physical “perfection”. These billboards not only tell me what to drink, but also how to look.
Our society places more importance on a person's physical beauty, rather than their ability, honesty and character. We have influenced women to go through painful surgeries and starve themselves to become this society-built physical model.
But what about the women who are starting to leave their youth Instead of looking at aging as a sign of wisdom, we try to prevent the aging process. It's a kind of funny thing to want to look eighteen when fifty. Fifty is a relaxed age, when you can step back and look at all you've achieved (successfully complete something). It is when your hard work pays off. Unfortunately, our society just sees you as “old”. To stop the aging process, women buy anti-wrinkle creams, do eye lifts and face lifts. They spend thousands of dollars winning the hopeless battle against age.
I remember when I was about thirteen years old and going through teens, I had oily hair, and a half developed body. I hated the way I looked. I used to cry to my mother all the time, but she would just laugh and tell me that “you don't want anyone to like your appearance. It's your heart that is important, because beauty fades.” I knew that she was right. If you work on your heart enough, people will start to see the beauty in you, which lasts and remains on even after you die.

Dear John,
I'm more than delighted to receive your e mail, knowing that you're fascinated by the history of the Tang Dynasty. I'm writing to recommend a book entitled A Journey Back to the Tang Dynasty, which I happened to read recently.
Adopting a natural, chatty style of writing, the author of this popular history book turns history into a story, which I bet will be easy for you to understand. Additionally, despite its plain language, the factual accuracy of the book is beyond doubt, as the author has referred to many academic books to check the facts. You can either borrow the book from the school library or order one online.
I sincerely hope that my recommendation can be of some help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jenny was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate, Rose, however, was not in the cool kids' group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Rose, Rose, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”. Every time Rose heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Jenny didn't really like it when the kids chanted “Rose, Rose, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Jenny went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lived on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he kept chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Jenny noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half bare!
“What's the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Jenny let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Rose, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I'm going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Jenny told the cool kids about the chicken. “It's looking healthy,” she said proudly.
“It's fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and ...” Everyone was entertained by Jenny's story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Then Jenny spotted Rose sitting by herself in a corner. But Jenny walked directly toward Rose, regardless of what they said.
Then Jenny spotted Rose sitting by herself in a corner. She kept her head down with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. It hit Jenny that the pecking order worked in school, too. Rose was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It's time for me to make an apology to Rose.” Jenny thought to herself. No sooner had she made up her mind than she announced it to the cool kids surrounding her. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti Are you crazy?”
But Jenny walked directly toward Rose, regardless of what they said. “Hi, Rose. I'm sorry about the spaghetti thing.”Jenny murmured an apology, her face reddening. “I know it hurts you. Can you forgive us?” She figured Rose might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Jenny wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Rose. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Rose, and Jenny also gained an important life lesson that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.

There is also a place to get your hair cut, a place to wash your clothes,
and a school.

第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly: “Beauty_is_only_skin_
deep,_but_ugly_goes_clean_to_the_bone.”
篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了美丽的好处和坏处,重点介绍了美丽的消极影响,还告诉我们不要过分关注自己的外表。
28.From Paragraph 1, we can learn that ________.
A.some may be bothered by their unattractive appearance
B.most people are not afraid of being too beautiful
C.we might always dream about being bothered by others
D.being too beautiful can be a problem bothering everyone
解析:推理判断题。根据第一段“Can you be too beautiful ... the case.(人会美得过头吗?这几乎不是一个我们大多数人需要操心的问题——尽管我们可能会梦想它是这样的。)”可推知,大多数人不害怕太美。故选B。
29.Which is mentioned according to the passage
A.Doctors care more about beautiful patients.
B.Beautiful people tend to have a healthy body.
C.Attractive women and men have equal chance of leadership.
D.Focusing too much on your appearance can be harmful.
解析:细节理解题。根据最后一段第一句“To conclude, scientists ... with good looks.”可知,过分关注自己的外表是有害的。故选D。
30.What's the meaning of the underlined sentence in the last paragraph
A.The more beautiful outside, the less beautiful inside.
B.Beauty can help make a better personality.
C.Beauty cannot make up for bad personalities.
D.Ugly people have more confidence in their personality.
解析:句意理解题。根据画线句前的“It's an outdated ... a bad personality.”及“As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly”可知,画线句是对前一句话的优雅的表达,即“美貌不能弥补不好的性格”。故选C。
31.What might be the best title for the passage
A.What is Real Beauty B.The Bad Effects of Beauty
C.Benefits of Beauty D.Beauty, a Blessing
解析:标题判断题。根据第二段第一句“Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long standing interest in psychology.(但是美丽带来的福祸一直是心理学研究的热点。)”并结合全文内容可知,本文讲的是虽然美丽会有光环效应,但很多时候,美丽会带来负面影响,因此D项(美丽,真的是福分吗?)适合作为文章标题。故选D。
D

Additionally, despite its plain language, the factual accuracy of the book is beyond doubt,
as the author has referred to many academic books to check the facts.
“ Oh, what a poor little thing!” Jenny let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Rose, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Then Jenny spotted Rose sitting by herself in a corner. ﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍
