Join us for the opening of the schools
of the future exhibition—event
The year is 2035. A group of schoolchildren head over to a garden for lunch and, after the break, teachers send lessons into headsets (头戴式耳机) worn by students. The wearable tech is able to read body signals to make sure the child is concentrating (全神贯注) and can differentiate the lessons according to how their young charge is getting along. It can also send a full progress assessment to the teacher.
This is one picture of the future of school life, but how likely is it Over the past five months, the Guardian Teacher Network has been exploring how schools might develop over the next twenty years and beyond. Our journalists have explored a series of topics from whether computers could replace teachers and how some libraries are breaking with tradition, to the rise of outdoor learning and the forest school revolution. One area that provides much food for thought is the future of school dinners. Journalist Matthew Jenkin has looked back at Jamie Oliver's campaign against Turkey Twizzlers, deciding that the next hot topics include mealtimes and foods.
We're now bringing these ideas to life in an exciting exhibition, supported by Zurich Municipal, held at our offices in London. It is free to attend. We'll be hearing from Liz Sproat, the head of education for Google across Europe, Middle East and Africa.
We'd love for you to join us for a spot of future drinks and food.
Date: Sunday 17 June
Time: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Here on the island of Demesne, the humans call us “clones”. I call myself Elysia, because that's what Dr Lusardi told me to call myself. I started to exist just weeks ago. But I am a sixteen-year-old girl with no soul. I know nothing of my First, the girl I was cloned from.
We entered a private room, just me, the fancy lady Mrs Bratton, and Marisa.
The fancy lady pushes me with one of her fingers as one might poke a piece of fruit at the market. She gently pokes my flesh. She presses her hands against my back to test its firmness.
“She's attractive,” she says.
Marisa warns her, “Mrs Bratton, she is a Beta (a new product being tested by users). Dr Lusardi has not perfected the teen line yet.”
“I guess that will be reflected in the price,” says Mrs Bratton.
“Of course,” Marisa says. “Dr Lusardi will be thrilled to know someone is willing to take a chance on a teen Beta.”
Mrs Bratton looks at me, “What's your name, dear?”
“Elysia,” I say.
“I think you might make a wonderful addition to our household, Elysia. We're so badly missing a teenage girl ever since Astrid, my eldest, went off to Biome University,” she says sadly.
“Congratulations,” I say, because I know that's the appropriate thing to say to a parent whose child has studied in a well known university. “You must be very proud.”
Mrs Bratton's face brightens. “I am! But Astrid's so hard-working that she seldom comes back to visit us. We miss her a lot. Would you like to come to my family?”
“Yes, ma'am,” I say.
Marisa sends me back into the store when she finishes the negotiations with Mrs Bratton. I am to pick out some nice clothing to take to my new home, where I shall serve my new owner.

Someday, you may no longer need to brush your teeth by hand. Instead, a group of billions of nanoparticles (纳米粒子) could automatically do all that work for you. It would be especially life changing for people who find it difficult or impossible to hold and move a toothbrush.
Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones on a toothbrush. But these bristles shape shift to fit whatever surface they encounter.
The tooth cleaning robot works thanks to two magnets. One goes each side of the teeth. The nanoparticles sit in a liquid between the magnets. When the magnets are turned off, the nanoparticles move randomly in the liquid. As soon as one magnet gets turned on, the nanoparticles gather together near its center. When the researchers turn on the other magnet and turn off the first one, the nanoparticles extend outward in long, skinny bristles. When there's a tooth in the way, these bristles can't stretch out as far as they want. So they push against the tooth's surface. If there's a gap between teeth, they push into the gap. Moving the magnets makes the bristles move against and between teeth. All that motion cleans the teeth. As a bonus, the nanoparticles also have strong power to kill viruses.
The new device is just a proof of concept. The researchers still need to turn it into a product that people will want to use. “There's a lot of engineering to get from here to there, but every good idea needs to have a start,” says Steager.

The idea of having a car, a plane, or a drone (无人驾驶飞机) parked outside your home may not be as unlikely as it seems.
We are going to have personal air vehicles that are both cars and planes. At least that's Missy Cummings's vision of the future. It's basically the intersection of a drone with a robotic car, so your plane is also your car, but the quick development of technology is that you are actually driving neither.
Drones have a negative image in the media, says Cummings, because they are basically seen as spy cameras. But most people don't realize that when they are on a plane they are effectively travelling on a drone. The fly by wire technology that exists on all Airbuses and many crafts of Boeing is exactly the same technology that exists on drones.
The reason why drones are the answer to the future is that we are terrible drivers. Humans have a half second lag (滞后) in almost any quick response that they need to have. Even a half second delay can mean the difference between life and death, and computers and automated (自动化的) systems don't have that.
So, our transportation network of the future, both on the ground and in the air, will actually be safer when we turn it over to computers.
There really aren't any technological difficulties to this idea. The biggest difficulties we have in terms of giving up the car are psychological and cultural, but no new technology needs to be developed to have your own personal flying car. What we have to do is to improve production and reduce manufacturing costs.
People should be excited about this: it promises much in terms of safer travel, and people in parts of the world where the road and air networks are poor will be able to get the goods and services.

Farms of the Future
Skyscrapers (摩天大楼) are the ultimate symbol of urban life. By 2050, almost 80 percent of the earth's population could live in cities. The human population could increase to 9.1 billion people, yet the amount of land available for farming will be the same. __36__
Vertical farms, where farmers could grow crops in environmentally friendly skyscrapers, could be the solution. In spite of concerns over high costs, experts want to make these urban farms a reality and use these skyscrapers to grow crops. __37__
Vertical farms would have many advantages, experts say. The food would be grown with minimal effects on the environment. Unlike traditional farming, vertical farming would not force animals out of their habitats by taking over large areas of land, nor would it pollute the air with the use of heavy farming equipment. __38__ These have been well recognized.
Growing prosperity has led to many people demanding that all foods be available all year round. Indoor farming could produce crops constantly and crops would not suffer from weather related problems like drought or flooding. In addition, the use of agricultural chemicals for controlling insects would be minimal.
__39__ They point out that although crops growing in a tall glass building would get natural sunlight during the day, it wouldn't be enough. The plants closest to the windows would grow much more quickly than the plants further inside. The plants growing away from the windows may not produce as many or as high quality vegetables. __40__ They would need additional light sources.
Experts agree that the new farming practices are needed to support the planet's need for more and more food at affordable costs, both to the farmer and to the consumer. Vertical farms may be a small scale answer, but the best ideas could be yet to come.
A.Still, there are some people who are critical of vertical farms.
B.That is where vertical farms are often needed for year round crops.
C.So how to meet the increasing food needs of our planet could be a big problem.
D.For these reasons, natural light cannot be a workable solution for vertical farms.
E.Vertically grown food is grown in environmentally controlled conditions in big cities.
F.Those farms would also reduce the cost and negative effects of transporting food over distances.
G.They believe that we can increase the food production by changing our thinking from out to up.

The cell phone has become our tour guide, travel agency, best restaurant locator, map, and more. It's __46__ during the entire purchase journey. In fact, according to TripAdvisor, 45% of users use their smartphones for everything having to do with their vacations.
This is why there's a need to __47__ corporate services and communications to these devices. KLM, for example, has already created an information service for passengers using Facebook Messenger. This system, once someone has made a __48__, sends the user information regarding their ticket through Facebook Messenger as well as their boarding pass or updates about the __49__ of their flight. This way, the user has all the relevant information about their trip in the palm of their hand using an app that they already use, __50__ the need to download anything else.
Augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) have also entered the travel world, and the truth is that it's a trend __51__ all the possibilities they can offer. More and more companies use it to show users a cabin on a cruise ship or transport them, for a few seconds, to the Great Wall of China.
In addition, we're all familiar with Siri and Alexa, the __52__ assistants that meet all our needs: what's the weather like today in my city, turn the radio on, open my email, and more. Hotels are now starting to __53__ this “help” thanks to the arrival of virtual assistants that are __54__ designed for this environment. IBM recently __55__ Watson Assistant, an AI-powered virtual assistant that creates an interactive and personalized experience for consumers. This is the open technology that firms can employ and adapt to their needs. This way, the virtual assistant won't be called Watson but instead, have the name that the hotel chooses.

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War Ⅱ and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn't know she was going to America and would not be returning.
Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, “Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it's going to bring both of us luck.” And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.
Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.
“I'm sorry. Do I know you?” Eliza asked.
“I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend,” the old woman replied. “She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours.” Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother's childhood friend

[精彩范文]
Then the old woman introduced herself, “My name is Betty. I'm originally from Poland, but left there when I was thirteen. And I have been living here in Washington DC in America ever since.” Eliza could not believe it, stories of her grandmother's best friend floating in her mind. She assumed that the old woman must be her grandmother's best friend. She said, “Betty, would you mind coming with me right now I need to show you somebody.”
The old woman agreed. Soon they left the restaurant after dinner. Arriving at Scout's home, the old woman eagerly rang the doorbell. The moment Scout opened the door, she was amazed to see her childhood friend standing in front of her. How magical! The scarf indeed brought them good luck. Excited and moved, both of them were in tears. They hadn't seen each other for many years and had many things to share.

Join us for the opening of the schools of the future exhibition—event
We’re now bringing these ideas to life in an exciting exhibition, supported by Zurich Municipal, held at our offices in London. It is free to attend. We’ll be hearing from Liz Sproat, the head of education for Google across Europe, Middle East and Africa.
We’d love for you to join us for a spot of future drinks and food.

“I’m sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend,” the old woman replied. “She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours.” Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother’s best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother’s childhood friend
