For many years, I wanted to be a music video director. After graduating from high school, I moved to Los Angeles. I earned a degree in video production there. Fortune smiled upon me as I quickly worked as a production helper. I was young and ambitious, doing my best in my dream work.
One day, I worked as a volunteer at an award show. A production manager talked with me and said that I was going to be a “big fish” one day. I was praised, but frightened. I wasn’t sure whether I could bear the pressure of being a “big fish”. Not too long after the show, I was laid off from my position at the production company. I went back home to Florida to think about my next career move.
In Florida, I found a job in a financial company. The pay was good, and the work was not difficult. But a few months later, my creative spirit sent an SOS to my brain. It reminded me that I wasn’t making the best use of my talents. I didn’t have the money to make another cross-country move back to Los Angeles, but I couldn’t wait to create something.
I did some creative writing during my spare time. To motivate myself even further, I promised myself a children’s storybook. My goal didn’t end there, however. I also decided to get the book published. It was not easy, and I continued sending out my work for nearly four years. Finally my work attracted the interest of a publisher.
When I held a copy of my beautiful children’s book in my hands, I felt really happy from the bottom of my heart. I may not have become a big fish, but I did achieve a goal. Success comes from efforts. When you have something to fight for, you’re not far from success.
4. The author went to Los Angeles to ______.
A. find a high-paid job B. reach for her dream
C. visit a famous film director D. take part in volunteer activities
5. What was the author’s reaction to the production manager’s comments on her
A. Proud. B. Delighted. C. Uncertain. D. Disappointed.
6. What does the author think of her job in Florida
A It lacks challenges. B. It requires a higher degree.
C. It often takes up her free time. D. It can hardly support her family.
7. Which of the following sayings can best explain the theme of the passage
A. A good beginning makes a good ending.
B. A thousand mile trip begins with one step.
C. Never judge a person by appearance.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Comfort food makes a person feel good. Food high in sugar or fat tends to improve moods by stimulating (刺激) the brain’s reward system. So it makes sense that many of us may turn to food for comfort in times of stress. There’s some fascinating research that examines food as a source of comfort. However, the most interesting thing about this research may be that foods are far less comforting than we tend to believe they are.
Traci Mann, a professor of psychology, and colleagues conducted a series of study with college students. The researchers examined how much comfort foods actually improve moods. They provided students with one of the three foods that they had indicated were their top, personal comfort foods. After producing a negative mood by having them watch movie clips designed to increase their sadness, anger and anxiety, the researchers offered the students their comfort food.
They had to assess (评估) how they felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream, pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically ate to feel better. All of the students completed the study on two separate occasions: once when they were able to eat their comfort food and once when they were able to eat another food they liked, but they wouldn’t call it a comfort food. The researchers found that comfort food did improve students’ moods—but only by a little bit and not more than the other food they liked. In another study, comfort food was compared to no food at all, and students’ moods seemed to improve even when they didn’t eat anything—most likely just due to the passage of time.
The take-home message from the studies While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to deal with emotional problems. Of course, everyone can indulge in a comfort food from time to time, but overall, aim for these instances (例子) to be the exception rather than the rule.
8. Which aspect of comfort food do Traci Mann’s studies focus on
A. The degree to which it lifts moods.
B. Its role in reducing negativity.
C The means by which it affects moods.
D. Its influence on physical health.
9. How were the studies carried out
A. By analyzing questionnaires about comfort foods.
B. By watching students’ different reactions to foods.
C. By collecting data about people from all walks of life.
D. By comparing students’ feelings on different occasions.
10. The underlined word “indulge” in the last paragraph probably means
A. Avoid B. enjoy casually C. give up D. criticize strictly
11. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Comfort Food Tends to Be Unhealthy
B. Happiness from Comfort Food
C. Comfort Food May Not Work Wonders
D. The Science behind Comfort Food

Many children are introduced to animals through TV shows or movies. Shaun the Sheep, a popular cartoon series, features a variety of animals living at the Mossy Bottom Farm. Among them, naughty Shaun is the clever leader of his flock of sheep. Sheep in this series look a bit different from common ones because the TV show used the Valais Blacknose sheep as the model.
There are few animals that make people say “Aww!” in a high-toned voice as quickly as the Valais Blacknose sheep. As the cutest sheep in the world, these animals come from the Valais region in Switzerland. They are instantly recognizable thanks to their charming appearance. With spiral-shaped horns(螺旋形的角), they have soft, white wool, which contrasts with the black patches spread evenly over their faces and found on their ears, knees, and ankles.
The Valais Blacknose sheep have a rich history deeply rooted in the Swiss Alps. They were originally raised in the 15th century for their highly valued wool. However, it was not until 1962 that they were officially recognized as a breed (品种). Their population once dwindled but continuous efforts have been made to protect this unique breed. These efforts have been successful, and the Valais Blacknose sheep can now be found in various parts of the globe.
Looking like a combination of a lamb and a teddy bear, the Valais Blacknose sheep has found its place in the hearts of many people. They are also raised as pets due to their adorable, gentle, and friendly nature which makes them perfect companions. However, it’s important for owners to consider their needs, including suitable living environment, nutrition(营养), and space to wander. Whether as wool producers or beloved pets, the Valais Blacknose sheep have gained their fame in being helpful animals.
12. How is the topic introduced
A. By listing characters in a TV show.
B. By describing the nature of an animal.
C. By comparing leaders of different animals.
D. By showing a character in a cartoon series.
13. What is mainly talked about concerning the Valais Blacknose sheep in paragraph 2
A. Its character. B. Its appearance. C. Its use. D. Its origin.
14. What does the underlined word “dwindled” mean in paragraph 3
A. Remained stable. B. Changed constantly.
C. Increased rapidly. D. Decreased gradually.
15. What should owners take into consideration when raising the Valais Blacknose sheep
A. Sheep’s food needs. B. Sheep’s appearance.
C. Owner-sheep interaction. D. Owner-sheep relationship.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
“What is your problem ” So simple and yet so difficult to answer, that essential question is what I ask my high school engineering students when they begin the study of inventions. Our students are often provided with the problem, or spoon-fed with a solution, or end up checking their answers against those in the back of the book.___16___
The concept is the “invention design process” or “engineering design process”.___17___These steps include identifying a practical problem, developing potential solutions and ultimately designing something that proves they can improve the lives of beneficiaries. In short, we are talking about real problems that affect real people.
Students will often say, “___18___” My reply is similar: “I don’t either, but it is going to be a lot of fun seeing you find one.” At this point in the process, students begin to realize that not only do they need to identify a problem, but they have to clearly understand it. There is no room for loosely pieced together projects without thought or true purpose.
For example, each term my class invents devices to assist local fire and police departments. At the end of the unit, we invite police officers and firefighters to a showcase who then provide students with feedback (反馈) on the devices.___19___As a result, the students will also give their projects serious attention.
Inventing is a skill and every student can develop that skill. It may be a cliché (陈词滥调), but it’s true — kids are natural inventors. And once they are taught the skills of how to invent, there is no stopping them. As a teacher, I can’t help but ask, “___20___”
A. I don’t know the answer to the problem.
B. I don’t know what problem I should solve.
C. Now I am introducing them to a foreign concept.
D. It involves students in completing a series of steps.
E. How could you not give the problem the attention it deserves
F. How can I not want to send more problem-solvers into the world
G. They do not have time to waste on projects that don’t take their work seriously.

A new student was transferred (转学) to Jackson’s class yesterday. Jackson sat at his school desk and looked over at the new kid, whose name was Billy. He just moved here from Florida. It was his second day in class and, so far, Jackson had not talked to him. Today, Jackson was going to try to make a new friend at recess(课间休息).
When the bell rang for recess, Jackson hurried out of his seat and followed Billy outside. “Hi Billy,” Jackson said as they walked outside. “Do you want to play basketball ” “No. I’m not very good at basketball.” “Do you want to play kickball ” Jackson asked. “No. I’m not good at that either,” Billy said.
Billy walked away from Jackson and sat on a big flat rock in the grassy part of the schoolyard. Jackson stood there and wondered what to do next. He asked Billy to do two things but both times Billy said no. Maybe he didn’t like Jackson. Maybe he didn’t want to make friends. Jackson thought about playing alone, but it didn’t seem very fun.
