Ben was eleven years old when he spotted his neighbour, Julie, working in her garden. He popped his head over the fence, and said to her, “I’ve seen you’re very good with a lawn mower (割草机) and gardening tools. The hedge (树篱) over the pathway near here has become so overgrown that I am planning to cut it back. Would you like to help out ”
Julie loved the idea of helping Ben and their community. They agreed to cut the hedge the following Sunday. Ben’s brother Josh, aged 8 at the time, also came along to help. All three of them tackled away at it until they reduced it.
They posted photos of their handiwork on “Our Malmesbury”, their local Facebook Group. The community reaction was amazing. The comments and reactions just kept on coming. The whole town of Malmesbury seemed to embrace (欣然接受) their team spirit and felt inspired to follow their lead. Many people raised their hands to volunteer and do more to keep their town tidy. With many willing hands, their town has transformed. Before, the town looked a bit run down, but now, the place looks cleaner and tidier.
To keep the projects going, Ben created a Facebook page and website to support their projects. Their Facebook Page “Helping The Community Of Malmesbury” currently sits at 669 members and is a place for all the locals to share what litter picking and cleaning up they have been up to. Ben also managed to sort funding through local businesses and associations. The funding has helped them obtain trees, plants, tools, and gardening equipment. When community members plan a clean-up, they can contact them on the website to access any tools and equipment they need to complete a project.
Ben is so pleased that 6 years later, the clean-up campaign is still in full-swing. He has just been so moved by the support over the years that he cannot thank the community enough. Their mission will not stop.

Our planet quakes thousands of times a year, but we still can’t predict exactly when and where the next earthquakes will strike. What if animals’ odd behavior could warn us
Researchers have reviewed hundreds of reports on pre-quake abnormal animal behaviors, but more were just anecdotes. Geologist Jim Berkland counted newspaper ads looking for runaway cats and dogs. On October 13, 1989, he told a newspaper reporter a big quake would strike in a week. Four days later, the Loma Prieta mega-quake hit! But the scientific community still rejected Berkland’s theory. He didn’t document every prediction, so nobody could measure his accuracy rate. Actual scientific evidence has to be repeatable. And a connection between a cause and an effect has to be stronger than random chance through careful experimentation and data collection. California researchers in the 1970s built controlled habitats to monitor the wheel-running activity of pocket mice. These habitats happened to be in an active earthquake area. Then the 1971 San Fernando earthquake struck nearby. The researchers checked their data and found no big changes in how long the animals ran in their wheels or stayed underground before the earthquake activity. What might the next experiment show
Researchers from 150 universities worldwide are working on a new study called the ICARUS project. The project tracks many small animal species such as birds, bats, and turtles (海龟) for the purpose of scientific research. One group of researchers is looking for possible connections between animal behavior and earthquakes. If they find a reliable connection, this could save hundreds of thousands of human lives. ICARUS aims to power an app that will give people hours to get to safety. However, not everyone is hopeful. Geologist Wendy Bohon said that ICARUS is doing some “cool things,” but she knows animal behavior is hard to pin down (证实). “My cat could act crazily before an earthquake,” she says. “But it also acts crazily if somebody uses the can opener.”
8. What does the underlined word “anecdotes” mean in paragraph 2
A. Real-life news stories. B. Random individual studies.
C. Unproved personal accounts. D. Repeated scientific reports.
9. Why was Berkland’s theory rejected by the scientific community
A. He used unreliable data from newspaper ads.
B. His document wasn’t consistent with his theory.
C. His study didn’t include enough animal samples.
D. He failed to prove the accuracy of his predictions.
10. What is the ultimate goal of the ICARUS project
A. To provide accurate pre-quake warnings.
B. To develop an app to call for help during quakes.
C. To seek worldwide cooperations in quake prediction.
D. To find connections between animal behaviors and quakes.
11. What is Wendy Bohon’s attitude towards the ICARUS project
A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful. C. Intolerant. D. Unclear

Consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has increased over the past 20 years. UPFs contain few or no whole foods, are industrially produced, are ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat, and include additives. The ultra-processing of food reduces its nutritional value. It has been known that higher UPF consumption is associated with overweight and heart disease. Now, research has been extended to examine its potential consequences for mental health.
In a new study, over 72,000 participants who were at least 55 years old and didn’t have dementia (痴呆) at the start of the study were followed for an average of 10 years, during which they filled out questionnaires regarding their diet. At the end of the study, 518 people were diagnosed (诊断) with dementia. After adjusting for other factors that could affect risk of dementia such as age, gender, and heart disease, researchers found every 10 percent increase in daily intake of UPFs was associated with a 25 percent higher risk of dementia. They also found replacing 10 percent of UPFs with unprocessed or minimally processed foods was associated with a 19 percent lower risk of dementia.
In another study, researchers found individuals who consumed the most UPFs had significant increases in the symptoms (症状) of mild depression, “mentally unhealthy days”, and “anxious days”. Eric Hecht, Founder and Executive Director of the Institute of Etiological Research, said, “More than 70 percent of packaged foods in the US are classified as UPFs and represent about 60 percent of all calories consumed by Americans. Considering the degree of exposure to and effects of UPF consumption, this study has great significance in clinical practice and public health. It might help improve future development of dietary guidelines.”
Facing such alarming data, maybe it’s time for Americans to reconsider their food choices. Researchers recommend taxes on UPFs and carrying out policies to reduce the consumption. They also support programs and policies to increase the availability and affordability of whole foods, especially among disadvantaged populations.
12. What do we know about UPFs
A. They have no nutritional value.
B. They are cheap and mass-produced.
C. They are ready-made and instant foods.
D. They serve as additions to our daily diets.
13. How does the author develop Paragraph 2
A. By contrasting the findings of two related studies
B. By presenting the research elements and conclusions in order
C. By discussing the reasons behind the research’s final conclusion
D. By using real-life examples to illustrate a known scientific rule
14. What do researchers suggest doing about UPFs
A. Collecting higher taxes on UPFs.
B. Decreasing UPFs’ consumption in diet.
C. Focusing on the nutrient content of foods.
D. Increasing public awareness of whole foods.
15 Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Public Health Response to UPFs
B. Physical Disorders Linked to UPFs
C. Rising Consumption of UPFs in the US
D. Negative Effects of UPFs on Mental Health

How to Plot a Short Story
A great short story drops the reader into its world quickly and holds their attention all the way through. ____16____ It can be as simple as knowing a few key moments you want to work your way toward. You’ll wind up with things you never imagined at the start. Follow these steps to plot your next story.
Brainstorm. You don’t need to have multiple short story ideas ready to go at a moment’s notice. ____17____ When that idea comes to you, sit down and flesh it out. Make note of any characters, settings, or bits of dialogue that you see.
____18____ The foundations of your main conflict or theme often form a short story’s rising action. To create tension and movement, you must know exactly what your character wants and what would prevent them from getting it. Conflicts can be internal or external, so imagine at what stage the reader will be meeting your character.
Create a brief outline. Sketch out (草拟) the flow of events your short story will contain, including interactions between characters and key moments. Write down identifying characteristics. But when it comes to drafting, pick your moments of backstory carefully. ____19____
Pick a point of view. Many short stories work well in first-person because of their brevity (简洁). But there’s no hard and fast rule saying yours must. ____20____ Regardless of which point-of-view you choose, it’s usually best to center that narrative (描述) around one main character to ensure a consistent read on the situation at hand.
A. Select the right character.
B. Write out the central conflict.
C. All you need is one solid concept.
D. Short stories allow the freedom to experiment because of their freestyle.
E. Plotting a short story doesn’t have to involve a detailed list of plot points.
F. If your story needs to be told in second-person or third-person, that works, too.
G. To make the cut, a piece of information must contribute to the story’s central events.

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
