Language Learning Apps
Babbel
If you’re looking for a complete language-learning package, Babbel is the way to go. It teaches the basics of grammar and pronunciation, before moving on to simple conversations. It slowly increases in difficulty, with spaced repetition (间隔重复) to help you learn. Unfortunately, the free trial is limited to just a single lesson for each language. Some lessons can feel dry and repetitive. There’s no real gamification (游戏化) here, so it doesn’t have the addictive attraction of some other apps.
Babbel is $15 per month, $38 for 3 months, $67 for 6 months, $89 annually.
Duolingo
Designing gamification into your language practice is a clever way to keep you interested, and no other app does this better than Duolingo. It’s easy and fun to use, and you will soon find yourself eagerly keeping your daily streak (每日打卡). However, Duolingo is light on speaking and listening. The free Duolingo offers a lot of great content, but you do have to put up with ads.
Duolingo is free. Super Duolingo is $13 per month or $84 annually, with a Family Plan at $120 annually.
Memrise
Memrise is a useful tool to learn basic vocabulary and simple conversations. It uses a familiar flashcard method to help you remember words and phrases. There are also grammar lessons and exercises. You can set goals, and lessons are quick. On the downside, the exercises can get repetitive. Additionally, there isn’t much explanation, and advanced learners should look elsewhere.
Memrise is free. Memrise Pro is $15 per month, $90 annually.
1. What is a weakness of Babbel
A. It offers no free trial. B. It is highly addictive.
C. It shows too many ads. D. It is boring sometimes.
2. Compared with the other two apps, what is special about Duolingo
A. It’s for free. B. It’s like a game. C. It’s easy to use. D. It teaches grammar.
3. How much do you need to pay for a membership of three months for Memrise Pro
A. $15. B. $38. C. $45. D. $90.

My family have collected bottles from sunrise to sunset all year long. My mother leaves at dawn to collect cans, and when she returns 12 hours later, I help her pull the shopping cart to the recycling center through the streets of Bushwick. I have kept it a secret all the time. I couldn’t bear the idea of my friends knowing our family live off other people’s garbage. I felt guilty for being embarrassed, but I couldn’t help it. I was not ready to trust someone else.
Then I took a college essay course, which required me to write an essay about what had the greatest impact on my personal growth. I chose to write about the impact my neighborhood had on me. At the end, there was just one sentence about can collecting.
One day after class, my teacher asked me to discuss my essay draft. “Your story has potential; however, it is not about personal growth. Would you tell me about the can collecting ” So I was faced with sharing my secret. But he was my teacher and I trusted him so I rewrote the essay.
Two days later I found out we were expected to read our essays out loud after lunch, but I felt ashamed that my peers would know. As I headed down to the cafeteria, I met up with a friend, Mason, who I always have lunch with. I was less talkative, and Mason found that I had something on my mind. I told him I was embarrassed about my family’s story. “You should be proud that your family are struggling to take care of their loved ones.” This was what I needed to hear and I felt like I could finally breathe after all those years of hiding a part of myself.
When we got back to class, I felt ready to read my draft out loud. After my classmates listened to my story, they said things like: “Each of our stories is unique to our experience and shapes us.” “Your being ashamed only hurts you.” “Accept your home and community, because they are your true family.”
Now, when people ask me what my parents do for a living, I tell them, not with embarrassment or shame but with pride, that my parents are can collectors.

5. What advice did Mason give to the author
A. Try hard to survive the poverty (贫穷) B. Show greater love for his family.
C. Form the habit of talking more. D. Treasure his family’s struggles.
6. What caused the author to change his attitude towards his family secret
A. Mason’s encouraging words. B. Taking a college essay course.
C. Reading the essay aloud in class. D. His teacher’s guidance on the essay.
7. How did the classmates respond after listening to the author’s story
A. They gave some criticism. B. They showed great pity.
C They expressed thanks. D. They offered persuasion.

Eating a plant-based diet has been shown to be very good for your heart and your overall health. In fact, a recent study found a young person could live an additional 13 years by eating more vegetables and legumes (豆类), as well as whole grains, fruit and nuts.
The findings of a new analysis of the diets of nearly 400,000 UK adults published Monday in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition are rather shocking: Eating veggies, especially cooked ones, doesn’t reduce your risk of heart disease over time.
“Our large study did not find evidence for a protective effect of vegetable intake on the occurrence of CVD (心血管疾病),” said Qi Feng, an epidemiologist at the University of Oxford, in a statement.
While the study found eating raw veggies could protect against heart disease, cooked vegetables did not. Any benefit went away when researchers factored in lifestyle factors such as physical activity, educational level, smoking, drinking, fruit intake, red and processed meat consumption, and use of mineral and vitamin supplements.
“Instead, our analyses show that the seemingly protective effect of vegetable intake against CVD risk is very likely to be accounted for by bias (偏差)... related to differences in socioeconomic situation and lifestyle,” Feng said.
Don’t start celebrating yet, veggie haters. Experts in the UK and United States quickly took exception to the study’s conclusion.
“Although this study found that eating more vegetables wasn’t associated with a lower risk of heart and circulatory diseases once other lifestyle and other factors were taken into account, that doesn’t mean we should stop eating vegetables,” said Victoria Taylor, a senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, in a statement.
“The results are not surprising. Picking out one single component and assuming just adding it to the diet, e. g., vegetables, is not likely to result in the desired effect,” Alice Lichtenstein, director and senior scientist at Tufts University’s Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory, told CNN in an email.
“One thing that has become clear over the past decade is that we should not be looking at single foods or nutrients, rather the whole dietary pattern,” said Lichtenstein.
8. What can we learn from the new study led by Feng
A It followed a young UK person for 13 years.
B. Its findings came as no surprise to other people.
C. It overturned the conclusion of previous studies.
D. Its purpose was to find the right vegetables for people.
9. What did Feng imply about vegetables’ protective effect
A. It was totally made up by some researchers.
B. It still held true despite some different findings.
C. It could only be achieved by living a healthy lifestyle.
D. It was a misconception caused by differences in people.
10. What does the underlined phrase “take exception to” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Voice objections to. B. Add details to.
C. Show respect for. D. Take notice of.
11. What did Lichtenstein think of the study
A. It was groundbreaking. B. It was one-sided.
C. It would cause confusion. D. It needed more evidence.

Imagine a customer-service center that speaks your language, no matter what it is. Alorica, a company in Irvine, California, which runs customer-service centers around the world, has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) translation tool that lets its workers talk with customers who speak 200 different languages and 75 dialects. So an Alorica worker who speaks, say, only Spanish can deal with a complaint about an incorrect bank statement from a Cantonese speaker in Hong Kong. And it wouldn’t need to hire an employee who speaks Cantonese.
However, Alorica isn’t cutting jobs. It will increasingly hire those who are comfortable with new technology.
Potentially, the threat: Perhaps companies won’t need as many employees — and will cut some jobs — if chatbots can handle the workload instead. Consider Suumit Shah, an Indian businessman who caused an uproar last year by saying that he had replaced 90% of his customer support staff with a chatbot named Lina. The move at Shah’s company, Dukaan, which helps customers set up e-commerce sites, reduced the response time to an inquiry from 1 minute, 44 seconds to “instant”. It also cut the typical time needed to solve problems from more than two hours to just over three minutes.
Similarly, researchers at Harvard Business School found in a study last year that job postings for writers, coders and artists decreased greatly within eight months of the arrival of ChatGPT.
But being exposed to AI doesn’t necessarily mean losing your job to it. The Swedish furniture retailer IKEA, for example, introduced a customer-service chatbot in 2021 to handle simple inquiries. Instead of cutting jobs, IKEA retrained 8,500 customer-service workers to handle such tasks as advising customers on interior design and fielding complex customer calls.
The experience at Alorica and IKEA suggests that AI may not prove to be the job killer that many people fear. Instead, the technology might turn out to be more like breakthroughs of the past—the steam engine, electricity and the Internet, which get rid of some jobs while creating others and probably make workers more productive in general to the eventual benefit of workers themselves, their employers and the economy.
12. What does the author want to tell us by the example in paragraph 1
A. The power of AI. B. The threat from humans.
C. The customer requirements. D. The tips on language learning.
13. What advantage does Lina have over other staff
A. Winning the trust of customers. B. Responding to customers faster.
C. Selling more products to customers. D. Having a great relationship with Shah.
14. What were IKEA’s customer-service workers asked to do in 2021
A. Take on other duties. B. Leave their company.
C. Move to HongKong. D. Develop latest chatbots.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. How Will AI Change Our Lives B. How Should We Use AI Effectively
C. Will AI Take Away Many Human Jobs D. What Is the Future of Traditional Companies

It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Everyone followed the teachers’ instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study.
His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he thought he had better things to do.
“Shall we go to the park ” he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. “It’s a nice day. We could play football and kick around.” Huck shook his head. “I’m supposed to review my lessons,” he said. “I’m going home to do some math.”
Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football ”
“Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.”
“That’s crazy,” said Marc. Huck shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Wait until I beat you in the test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!”
“You won’t beat me,” said Marc.
“Oh yes, I will.”
“Oh no, you won’t! That will never happen. Just wait and see!”
For the first time ever Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn’t bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he’d forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn’t know where to start. When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly by the desk, just staring out of the window.
