Dear Jack,
I’m excited to tell you about our school’s recent 1,000-meter morning run.
The event, starting in early October, takes place every weekday at 8:00 a.m. on the school sports field. Before running, we do a 10-minute warm-up, including stretching and light jogging, which helps prevent injuries. While running, we can listen to our favorite music, making the exercise more enjoyable. Some play energetic pop songs, while others choose calming piano tunes.
Personally, I find the activity refreshing. Though it was challenging at first, I gradually build stamina. What impresses me most is the sunshine during the run. It feels like a reward for our effort!
Looking forward to your thoughts!

Rain or shine, Tsering Chopa treks for long hours to deliver mail. For 18 years, the Tibetan mailman has been a vital link between the remote town and the rest of the world.
At 5,373 meters above sea level, Pumachangthang in Nakarze county of the Xizang autonomous region is China’s highest township. The oxygen level is less than 40 percent, the annual average temperature -7°C and the average life expectancy only 49.5 years. The area of the township is about 1,500 square kilometers. The distance from the county town is some 70 km and a single trip to all the six villages can be as long as 160 km.
In 2005, Tsering Chopa became the first mailman of his hometown. In nearly two decades since his first mission, he has delivered over a million newspapers, more than 20,000 letters and 10,000-plus parcels in Pumachangthang, and has never been accused of failing or mixing up mail.
One night, a local resident Nyima Tsering’s daughter had fainted and desperately needed help. Knowing that, the mailman arranged for a car right away and sent her to the county hospital. He also gave some cash to the family for the girl’s treatment. Nyima Tsering’s daughter recovered soon, and Tsering Chopa became an idol in the village.
The busiest time for Tsering Chopa is between July and August each year, when students are waiting for their admission letters from various universities. He recalls once he had to deliver mail to one student whose family had already moved away. He had to ask neighbors several times to find the new address. It was summer and the usual road to the village was blocked because of rain. He trekked for more than 20 km and struggled with shortness of breath all the way to finally deliver the letter.
In 2019, Tsering Chopa received the China Youth May Fourth Medal. “It is an acknowledgment of what I do and a token of encouragement as well,” he says. “And I want to help more people living in remote areas. I want to bring the world closer to them and take them closer to the world.”
4. What does the data in paragraph 2 imply

D. The challenges for Tsering Chopa to deliver mail in Pumachangthang.
5. How did Tsering Chopa help Nyima Tsering’s daughter
A. By donating a car to her family. B. By making her hospitalized in time.

A recent survey shows over a third of translators have lost work due to generative (生成式) AI, with 40% reporting obvious income decreases and 75% fearing lasting negative impacts on their future earnings. Conducted by the U.K.’s Society of Authors (SoA) — the country’s largest trade union for writers and translators — the survey finds 37% of translators have actively used generative AI to support their daily work, while 8% were specially asked to use it by their publishers.
Thomas Bunstead, an experienced translator stresses the need to understand the difference between literary translators and commercial (商业的) translators. He points out literary translation remains firmly in human hands, as AI has mainly taken over “bread-and-butter stuff” like guidebooks that don’t require much cultural difference or creative explanation. Nicholas Smalley, another translator agrees but worries that translators of crime and romance novels — now losing work to AI — may change to more difficult literary translation, increasing competition in the field.
Ian Giles, co-chair of the Translators Association, shares that his income from commercial translation work has dropped sharply since the beginning of last year. He warns the loss of non-literary income will raise the difficulty in entering this industry, leaving only the rich to pay for literary translation. Cost-cutting also influences literary fields, with some publishers using AI post-editing — AI translates first, then humans edit.
Nichola Smalley stresses post-editing actually needs more time and attention — AI-generated texts often read reasonable but hide small misreadings and less common expressions. Besides, Giles believes that: creative and literary translation will stay, driven by translators’ great passion and a strong audience demand for authentic (原汁原味的) human-translated content.
8. How does the first paragraph show AI’s impact
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers.
C. By giving examples. D. By making a comparison.
9. What does the underlined phrase “bread-and-butter stuff” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Literary works. B. Complex texts. C. Basic translations. D. Poetry works.
10. Why is getting into the industry harder for translators
A. AI replaces all work. B. Skills are outdated.
C. Non-literary income decreases. D. Publishers refuse humans.
11. How does Giles feel about literary translation
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Tolerant. D. Uninterested.
D
As we all know, rivers have been an important part of human history: They provide food, freshwater, and rich land for growing crops. Although water is important to life, it can be a terrible force. When rivers flood, the effects can be damaging.
Though floods bring damage, they also bring nutrients (营养物) and key components for life. Seasonal floods can renew ecosystems, providing life-giving waters in more ways than one. Floods transport necessary nutrients to the land. When the water flows away, it leaves nutrients behind on the land. This rich, natural fertilizer (肥料) improves soil quality and has a positive effect on plant growth, thus increasing productivity in the ecosystem. Ancient civilizations first started along the river mouths of seasonally flooded rivers, such as the Nile in Egypt, because they provided rich soil for farmlands.
Floods can supply underground water sources. Floodwater goes into the ground, and then passes through beds of soil and rock, finally reaching underground aquifers (含水层). These aquifers supply clean freshwater to wells, lakes, and rivers. Ecosystems depend heavily on groundwater during dry time when it may be the only supply of freshwater on hand. A good supply of groundwater has a great influence on soil health and leads to more productive crop and pasture lands (牧地).
Floods are a force of nature, and their results, both positive and negative, are strongly felt by influenced ecosystems. Whether you think of floods to be good or bad, one thing is sure: the world would be a very different place without them.
12. Why does the author mention the role of water in paragraph 1
A. To show its importance in life. B. To lead in the topic of flooding.
C. To present an argument about water. D. To describe the damaging force of nature.
13. What made the Nile one of ancient civilization birthplaces
A. The nutrients left in the water. B. The plant growth on the farmland.
C. The groundwater sources in the ecosystem. D. The soil quality improved by fertilizer.
14. What can we imply from the text
A. Floods only bring damage to ecosystems.
B. Floods are the main source of all groundwater.
C. Floods provide freshwater directly to the rivers.
D. Floods are important for underground water renewal.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Influence of Rivers on Ancient Societies
B. The Key Role of Seasonal Floods in Ecosystem
C. The Double Effects of Floods on the Environment
D. The Important Function of Groundwater in Droughts
