Write a summary of the text.
Three young people tell us what being 18 years old means, or meant, to them. Bethany, a 16-year-old Australian girl, can't wait to be 18. She will take her driving test the day she turns 18 and she understands driving means taking responsibility for both her life and other people's lives. Lin Ning, a 19-year-old Chinese boy, has begun to develop a stronger sense of social responsibility after his 18th birthday. Turning 18 also changed the way that society viewed him. Morgan, a 20-year-old boy from the US, used to believe he would become more independent after turning 18, but his librarian's salary means he will still be living at home with his parents to save money. He believes some responsibilities are more about attitude than age.
语篇中的回指
回指anaphora:语篇中的某词或短语和上文出现过的内容在语义层面上具有共指的关系。回指是实现语篇衔接的重要手段。
第一句开门见山点出文章话题:“In most countries, turning 18 marks the start of adulthood.”。第二句通过问句的形式引出了文章要讨论的主题:“But what does reaching this milestone, the age of majority, really mean ”。本句中,作者没有重复使用上文中出现过的turning 18,而用另外一种表达reaching this milestone来进行回指。第三句中,作者没有正面回答第二句提出的问题,而是通过另一个问句“Will you be completely in charge of your own life ... ”引导读者去思考。
第四句“What new responsibilities will this freedom bring ”依然是问句,this freedom这个简单的表达言简意赅地概括了第三句中的be completely in charge of your own life and able to express yourself in new and exciting ways。
最后一句承上启下,what turning 18 means, or meant回指上一句中的new responsibilities,自然而然引出了下文三位年轻人的观点。
回指不仅避免了单词的重复和行文的单调,还使文章各部分联系更加紧密,使文章更具有连贯性。
1. Do you think the minimum age limits in the passage are sensible Why or why not

The right to be educated and to work. Only by being educated will a person have the ability to be independent and only by working can a person support himself.
