In the early days of motherhood, I felt lonely. I had left a good job to take care of my six-month-old son. Although I loved being with him, I missed talking to other adults and wanted to hear news from outside. I knew I needed to make friends with other mothers — but I didn’t know how.
I often took my son, Ethan, to the grocery store, which wasn’t a good place to make friends. He enjoyed smiling at people and looking at colorful displays, but I needed more. “We have to find something better to do,” I thought.
Then one day my husband suggested going to the library. I loved reading but hadn’t had much time since Ethan was born. Maybe a good book could cheer me up.
While at the library, I discovered the children’s area. There was a schedule of activities for children, including a playgroup for babies and toddlers (学步的儿童). I wasn’t sure if I would know anyone, but I decided to give it a try.
The next week, Ethan and I went to the playgroup. I was nervous at first. Luckily, a friendly woman named Misty welcomed us. She introduced me to other moms, and we started talking about our children — their development, favorite foods, and sleep habits. I left feeling happy and hopeful about making new friends.
After that, Ethan and I seldom missed a playgroup. As he grew older, we joined more activities like “Tot Time” and “Story Time.” Later, when his younger sister and brother were born, our schedule became even busier. Together, we learned about gardening, met animals from the local zoo, and played educational games. Most importantly, we all made new friends.
I’m thankful for the moms I met at the library. We have similar backgrounds and children around the same age, so we can support and advise each other. When the children were younger, we met at different parks during summer. Now, we sometimes go out without the kids for dinner or shopping. We still join library activities together.
I’m still amazed how one small brave step changed my life so much. My advice is: don’t be afraid to talk to other moms. You can meet them at the park, church, school, or the library. You might just make lifelong friends.

6. How did the author feel after the first playgroup
A. Happy and hopeful. B. Tired and bored.
C. Nervous and annoyed. D. Determined but sad.
7. What is the main message of the story
A. Libraries are only for reading books.
B. Mothers should always stay at home.
C. Children don’t need friends when they are young.
D. It’s important to be brave and try new things to make friends.

A recent study conducted by researchers at MIT has found that using AI tools like ChatGPT may hurt people’s ability to think, learn, and remember in the long term. The study focused on students who used large language models (LLMs) to help them write essays (文章). These students showed less brain activity, poorer memory, and lower engagement (参与) compared with those who did not use AI.
The research team used Electroencephalogram scans (EEGs) to monitor the brain activity of 54 students in three groups when they were doing their writing tasks: one group used ChatGPT, one used Google, and the third used no external (外部的) help at all. Over a period of four months, the group that used ChatGPT performed worst in all areas — brain activity, language use, and scoring.
The findings showed that students who depended on AI had trouble remembering or quoting from their own essays. They also felt less ownership of their work. On the other hand, students who wrote without any help produced more original content and had more active brains. Even when students stopped using AI and tried writing on their own, their brain activity remained low. Interestingly, those who started without AI and later used it showed in increase in brain activity, suggesting they were actively trying combine the new tool with their own knowledge.
The researchers also warned that while AI makes tasks easier, it may reduce people’s willingness to think critically. Many users simply accept the AI’s answers without questioning them. Teachers were able to identify AI-generated essays because they followed a similar structure and lacked creativity.
Henry Shevlin, a researcher from Cambridge University, said that “Right now, there’s no proof (证据) that LLM usage caused lasting ‘brain damage’, but it suggests that AI could possibly form a kind of ‘laziness’”. He added, “We should be careful not to come to conclusions about whether AI is all good or all bad for learning. Some studies show positive results, while others show disadvantages. What really matters is how we choose to use the tool.”
8. Which group showed the lowest brain activity and poorest performance over four months
A. The group that used ChatGPT. B. The group that used Google.
C. The group that worked in pairs. D. The group that used no external help.
9. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the study’s findings
A. The study proved that using AI causes lasting damage to the brain.
B. Teachers could not identify AI-generated essays and student-written ones.
C. Students who went from writing alone to using AI showed a rise in brain activity.
D. Brain activity immediately returned to high levels just after students stopped using AI.
10. What can we infer from Henry Shevlin words
A All schools should immediately stop using AI tools.
B. The effect of using AI depends greatly on how it is used.
C. AI is always harmful in education, no matter how it is used.
D. The study’s conclusions are perfect and need no further discussion.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. AI May Weaken Learning Performances. B. How to Use ChatGPT for Essay Writing.
C. The Rapid Development of AI Technology. D. Why Teachers Dislike AI-generated Essays.

As a terrible heatwave continues to sweep across China, many people are turning to a quirky method to stay cool at night — hugging a winter melon while they sleep. This strange practice has become popular in provinces such as Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui due to its low cost, sustainability (可持续性), and surprising effectiveness.
The idea of using winter melons as a natural coolant (冷却剂) is not new. It actually comes from ancient Chinese tradition. There is even a classical poem titled Xia Ri Bao Gua Mian (which means “Sleeping with a Melon on a Summer Night” that describes this custom. Winter melons have a water content of more than 95%, which allows them to stay cool for hours. In traditional Chinese medicine, the melon’s peel (果皮) is also known for its ability to reduce inner heat.
Health experts like Yang Zufu from the China Rehabilitation Research Center say that holding a winter melon can be a mild and convenient way to lower body temperature. However, people who have weak digestion (消化) or are especially sensitive (敏感的) to cold are advised not to place the melon directly against their skin. Instead, they should wrap it in a towel or put it near their pillow.
Before using the melon, it is important to wash off the fine white fuzzy (绒毛) on its surface to prevent your skin getting red or uncomfortable, but the peel should not be damaged. Although placing the melon near your arms or legs can help you feel cooler, it is not recommended to press it against the stomach. When the melon gets warm, it can be cooled down again with cold water and reused.
In addition to this method, experts suggest other ways to beat the heat, such as wearing loose and breathable clothes, eating cooling foods like melons and sour fruits, improving air flow in rooms during early morning and late evening, and avoiding outdoor exercise during the hottest time of the day.
12. What does the underlined word “quirky” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Traditional. B. Unusual. C. Modern. D. Common.
13. What is the main reason why winter melons can help people cool down
A. They are cheap and easy to find. B. They can be reused many times.
C. They are recommended by health experts. D. They have a high water content and medicinal peel.
14. What can we infer from the expert’s advice in the passage
A. The method is only suitable for adults.
B. Winter melons are more effective than air conditioners.
C. Some people should take protective measures when using the method.
D. Everyone can always use this winter-melon method directly without any risk.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the practice of hugging winter melons
A. Uncertain. B. Objective. C. Worried. D. Humorous.

第二节(满分25分)

One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank (小猪存钱罐). It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open.
My grandfather explained that was the whole idea: the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. I promised that I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank.” This worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Each time I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or something else, I would imagine riding my bike on the street. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything.
But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the Internet that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children lost their parents and became homeless. Seeing their shabby (破旧的) clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

D. Everyone can always use this winter-melon method directly without any risk.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the practice of hugging winter melons

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My grandfather was surprised by my behavior.

【答案】
I knew I should do something. Staring at the piggy bank on my desk, I hesitated. I remembered how excited I felt each time I dropped a coin inside, dreaming of the bicycle I wanted so much. But the images of those homeless children kept flashing in my mind. Their shabby clothes and tearful faces were far more urgent than my dream bike. Taking a deep breath, I held the piggy bank and gently broke it open. Coins spilled across my desk, shining like tiny stars of hope.
My grandfather was surprised by my behavior. When he saw the broken pieces of the piggy bank, he asked, “What happened, my boy ” I told him the news and explained the earthquake and the children’s suffering. To my surprise, his worried expression softened into the warmest smile I had ever seen. He hugged me tightly, and said, “You have taught me something beautiful today.” Actually, this kindness is worth more than a thousand bicycles. I knew what I did was right. And I will continue to save money to get my dream bike.
