Adults usually do not remember most of the things that are taught by their teachers at school. But this story is one such lesson that I will never forget. Every time I drift off course, I think of this story.
It was a normal Monday morning, and my teacher was teaching us on important things in life and about devoting ourselves to what is important to us. This is how the story went.
An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would get onto the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg. He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at the same street corner and begged for almost 20 years.
His house was dirty, and a stench(恶臭) came out of the house and it smelled terrible. The neighbors could not stand the smell any more, so they called for the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years.
The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a millionaire(百万富翁). They waited outside his house expecting to share the good news with him. When the old man arrived home that evening, one of the officers told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a rich man now, a millionaire.
But the old man said nothing at all; he went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, sat at the street corner and continued to beg.
Clearly, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing.

C.there was something dangerous in the old man’s house
D.they couldn’t bear the smell from the old man’s house
27. When the old man knew he was a millionaire, he _______.
A.felt worried B.became excited C.remained calm D.became nervous
28. What lesson do we learn from the story
A.Make great plans for your life. B.Keep on doing what is important.
C.Do something that is good to society. D.Depend on yourself rather than others.
In Japan, you are what your blood type is. A person’s blood type is popularly believed to decide his/her character and personality. Type-A people are generally considered sensitive perfectionists and good team players, but over-anxious. Type Os are curious and generous but stubborn. Type ABs are artistic but mysterious and unpredictable, and type Bs are cheerful but eccentric, individualistic, and selfish. Though lacking scientific evidence, this belief is widely seen in books, magazines, and television shows. Last year, four of Japan’s top 10 best-sellers were about how blood type determines personality, through which readers seemed to be able to discover the definition of their blood type or have their self-image confirmed.
The blood-type belief has been used in unusual ways. The women softball team that won gold for Japan at the Beijing Olympics is reported to have used blood-type theories to customize training for each player. Some kindergartens have adopted teaching methods along blood group lines, and even major companies reportedly make decisions about assignments based on an employee’s blood type. In 1990, Mitsubishi Electronics was reported to have announced the formation of a team composed entirely of AB workers, thanks to “their ability to make plans”.
The belief even affects politics. One former prime minister considered it important enough to reveal in his official profile that he was a type A, while his opposition rival was type B.In 2011, a minister, Ryu Matsumoto, was forced to resign after only a week in office, when a bad-tempered encounter with local officials was televised. In his resignation speech, he blamed his failings on the fact that he was blood type B.
The blood-type craze, considered simply harmless fun by some Japanese, may reveal itself as prejudice and discrimination. In fact, this seems so common that the Japanese now have a term for it: bura-hara, meaning blood-type harassment (骚扰). There are reports of discrimination leading to children being bullied, ending of happy relationships, and loss of job opportunities due to blood type.
29.What’s the main idea of paragraph 1
A.The books about blood type are popular in Japan.
B.The Japanese attach great importance to blood type.
C.The Japanese confirm their personality totally through blood type.
D.The Japanese think blood type bestsellers are important to their self-image.
30.Which blood type can we infer is the LEAST favored in Japan
A.Type O. B.Type A. C.Type B. D.Type AB.
31.Why did Ryu Matsumoto resign from office
A.Because he revealed his rival’s blood type.
B.Because he was seen behaving rudely on TV.
C.Because he was discriminated against by others.
D.Because he blamed his failings on local officials.
32.What is the speaker’s attitude toward the blood-type belief in Japan
A.Negative. B.Defensive. C.Objective. D.Encouraging.
D
In the not-too-distant future, driverless cars will drive our streets. These cars will need to make quick decisions to avoid endangering human lives—both inside and outside of the cars.
To determine attitudes toward these decisions,a group of researchers created a modern version of the classic exercise known as “the Trolley Problem”.They raised a series of moral dilemmas(道德困境) involving a self-driving car with brakes(刹车) that suddenly give out.Should the car change direction to avoid a group of passers-by,killing the driver Or should it kill the people on foot but spare the driver Does it matter if the passers-by are men or women Children or older people Doctors or murderers
To put these questions to a large range of people, the researchers built a website called Moral Machine, where anyone could click through the situations and say what the car should do.“Help us learn how to make machines moral,” a video asks on the site.
What the researchers found was a series of near universal preferences,no matter where someone was from.People everywhere believed the moral thing for the car to do was to spare the young over the old, spare humans over animals, and spare the lives of many over the few.The findings were published Wednesday in the journal.
Researchers found that the 130 countries with more than 100 respondents(调查对象) could be grouped into three groups that showed similar moral preferences. And these preference seemed to be connected with social differences.Respondents from collectivistic cultures, which “value the respect for older members of the community”,showed a weaker preference for sparing younger people.
The researchers noted that the study’s results should be used with extreme carefulness and they shouldn’t be considered the final word on societal preferences—especially since these respondents were much fewer than they had expected.
33.What give(s) rise to the questions in paragraph 2
A.The researchers’ attitudes.
B.The driver’s hard decision.
C.The self-driving car’s power cut.
D.The driverless car’s brake failure.
34.What might affect respondents’ moral preferences
A.Their living habits.
B.Their family members.
C.Their cultural background.
D.Their educational background.
35.What is the major limitation of the research
A.The difficult questions.
B.The limited questions.
C.The small number of respondents.
D.The careless respondents.
36.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.The New Self-driving Cars
B.The New “Trolley Problem”
C.Should Car Drivers Be Moral
D.Does Moral Preference Matter
For outdoor lovers, it is important to be prepared for any kind of natural disasters in the open air. That means having a disaster response plan. 37 . And it also should include what resources should be taken on your trip.

六、书面表达(本大题共1小题)
68.Good friendship can get people through almost anything. Many times, a good friend will know what you need before you even ask for it, and they’ll want to offer a helping hand. That’s what happened to two friends in Caddo Hills High School. When one differently abled young man needed help, his friend went above and beyond.
When Brandon and Tanner met, Brandon was using a hand-push wheelchair. The chair was becoming kind of a pain for Brandon as he had to push his way down the halls from class to class around Caddo Hills High School. “My arms would get really tired and I would have to stop and take rests,” said Brandon.
Sometimes when they were together, Brandon would ask Tanner to push his wheelchair. Tanner was happy to help. Most often, Tanner would offer to help and he noticed how hard using this wheelchair was on his friend. Tanner thought that if his friend had had an electric wheelchair, life would be easier for him. But Brandon’s family was unable to afford it. Seeing how much his friend struggled in his wheelchair, Tanner made up his mind to do something about it. “He’s just been a really good friend and I wanted to do him a favor. I just felt like I needed to do it and I wanted to do it,” Tanner explained.
Then the enthusiastic(热心的)high school student became devoted to getting his friend a wheelchair. He got an after-school job at an auto repair shop and he worked there every afternoon. In order to help his friend out, Tanner worked part-time for two years. All of the money he earned went towards saving for a self-powered wheelchair. That moment finally came in late February, when he would present Brandon with a life-changing gift during the school day.

He is famous for his ability to create drawings of the city landscape from memory. He has drawn many cities such as Tokyo and Paris, to name just a few. He has a very good memory. It helps him remember the things in a place very well. He doesn’t need to walk around the city or learn about the city on a tall building. He is able to start drawing the city based just on a 20-minute helicopter flight the day before. When Stephen was three years old, he was found to have a problem. He was diagnosed with autism. He had trouble in controlling his feelings. He would suddenly walk around aimlessly and then burst into the other room. He says that drawing is one of the few things that can calm him down. Now people worldwide are amazed at his drawings. That’s all for tonight’s program.

With the help of his mother, Tanner found a wheelchair in an online store , which he thought would be the perfect gift for his friend. After buying the wheelchair, Tanner gave it to Brandon during the school day.
Brandon cried when he first got the wheelchair. He was so grateful to his friend for the amazing act of kindness. “Wow, I can’t believe he did that for me!” Brandon said, adding that it had been his dream to own an electric wheel-chair. Now, it was easier for him to get around, and he wouldn’t ever have to worry about his arms getting tired out again. Tanner was happy that his friend liked it. “I will help him as long as he needs me,” Tanner said, wishing more people in the world to care for the disabled.
