La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol close to Valencia in Spain. It is claimed to be the biggest food fight in the world.
What Happens at La Tomatina
At around 11 a.m., many trucks carry more than one hundred tons of over ripe tomatoes into the centre of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two story high wooden pole and reached the ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of a water gun. After one hour the fighting ends and the cleaning process begins.
The Rules of La Tomatina
Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants;
Do not tear other people's T shirts;
You must squeeze (捏碎) the tomatoes before throwing them;
As soon as you hear the second shot of the water gun, you must stop throwing tomatoes.
Useful Advice
Wear old shoes and clothes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. They will most likely end up damaged or incredibly dirty;
Don't wear slippers. You may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle;
If you are not from Bunol, and you want to stay overnight, don't forget to look for and secure accommodation in advance.
Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much as possible!

Cultivated (培育) meat, also known as lab grown meat, has been cleared for sale in the US.
Upside Foods and Good Meat, two companies that make “cultivated chicken”, said that they have gotten approval from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to start producing their cell based proteins. Good Meat said that production is starting immediately. Cultivated meat is grown in a giant vat (缸), much like what you'd find at a beer factory.
Last week, both companies revealed that the USDA approved labels for their products. In March, Good Meat received a “no questions” letter from the FDA, confirming the product's safety for sale in the US. Upside Foods also received one in November. Both the USDA and the FDA are overseeing the growing cultivated meat market. CEO of Good Meat, Josh Tetrick, described the approval as a major milestone for the company, the industry, and the food system. Upside founder Uma Valeti called the approval “a giant step forward towards a more sustainable future”.
Good Meat, which has been selling its products in Singapore, advertises its product as “meat without slaughter (屠宰)”, a more humane approach to eating meat. Supporters hope that cultivated meat will help fight climate change by reducing the need for traditional animal agriculture, which emits greenhouse gases. The company previously announced a partnership with chef José Andrés to introduce the product to a Washington DC restaurant, although the launch time remains uncertain. As production increases, Good Meat may explore cooperation with other restaurants or supermarkets.
Upside is planning to introduce its product at Bar Crenn, a San Francisco restaurant, but did not share a launch date yet. Selling at Bar Crenn should help Upside learn more about how chefs and diners feel about the product. Eventually, the company plans to work with other restaurants and make its products available in supermarkets. For now, it is holding a contest to allow curious customers to be among the first to try the product.

(2024·九省联考适应性测试)
In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie wrote:“I have come to the conclusion that there is only one way to get the best of an argument—and that is to avoid it.”This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives—and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.
Carnegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them. Like physical fights, verbal(言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions—like, say, tennis tournaments. Pairs of opponents hit the ball back and forth until one winner comes out from all who entered. Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to avoid arguments.
However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position, formulate(阐述) an argument for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your argument is any good. When you talk with someone who takes a stand, ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell out their argument fully. Assess its strength and weakness. Raise objections(异议) and listen carefully to their replies. This method will require effort, but practice will make you better at it.
These tools can help you win every argument—not in the unhelpful sense of beating your opponents but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them. If we readjust our view of arguments—from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all gain respect and understanding from each other—then we change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.
语篇导读:本文是一篇说明文。作者阐述了争论的意义和赢得争论的方法。

9.Why do many people try to avoid arguments
A.They lack debating skills.
B.They may feel bad even if they win.
C.They fear being ignored.
D.They are not confident in themselves.
解析:B 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Like physical fights, verbal(言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions—like, say,tennis tournaments.(和身体上的打斗一样,言语上的打斗也会让双方流血。即使你赢了,你最终也不会变得更好。如果争论只是一场比赛,比如网球比赛,你也会感觉很糟糕。)”可知,很多人尽量避免争论,是因为即使赢了他们也感觉很糟糕。故选B。
10.What does the underlined phrase“spell out”in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Defend.     B.Explain.
C.Conclude.       D.Repeat.
解析:B 词句猜测题。根据画线短语所在句“ask them to give you a reason for their view”可知,让他们为自己的观点提供依据,即让他们充分阐明他们的观点,spell out意为“解释明白,讲清楚”。故选B。
11.What is the key to“winning”an argument according to the author
A.Sense of logic.
B.Solid supporting evidence.
C.Proper manners.
D.Understanding from both sides.
解析:D 细节理解题。 根据最后一段中“If we readjust our view of arguments—from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all gain respect and understanding from each other—then we change the very nature of what it means to ‘win’ an argument.(如果我们重新调整我们对争论的看法——从一场口水战或网球比赛转变为一种理性的交流,通过这种交流,我们都能获得彼此的尊重和理解——那么我们就改变了‘赢得'争论的本质。)”可知,作者认为“赢得”争论的关键是通过交流获得彼此的尊重和理解。故选D。

Most Americans eat ultraprocessed (深加工的) foods every day. These are foods that you cannot make at home because they contain flavors and chemicals that change the taste or feel of the food. They are usually high in salt, sugar and fat.
1. Being overweight is one such result and that may lead to diabetes and heart disease. Other possible health risks include depression and dementia. One recent study suggested that eating these foods may raise the risk of early death.
Food manufacturers argue that processing increases food safety and food supplies.2. But many studies suggest that diets high in ultraprocessed foods are tied to poor health results. For example, in one study, people eating ultraprocessed food gained an average of about 1 kilogram during the study period.3.
Dr. Neena, director of a food policy program, said such foods are often made to be both low cost and very tasty. “You just can't stop eating them,” she said.4. They can make regulations and rules to limit salt in these foods and control how advertisers sell the foods to children.
Neena suggests buyers should check information printed on food containers and make choices based on the current state guidelines.5. Meanwhile, fruits and vegetables which are least processed do us good, though they may not taste delicious.
