I can well remember the pain. My stomach was sick, my heart hurt, and my eyes painful from holding back tears.
“You know, Annie,” my friend John said, “Joanna and Andrea were just talking about you.” I immediately got nervous. “They said that the only reason you start on the basketball team is because the coach likes you. It’s not because you’re good.” I thought I might be sick. “They said they’re tired of you always getting what you want.” I struggled to keep myself from crying, sinking to my knees on the cold floor. After John told me everything my supposed best friends said about me, I was hurt.
Joanna and Andrea came in from lunch break acting as if nothing had happened. Joanna was still my deskmate, and Andrea was still my partner for our history project. I was amazed at their ability to pretend we had perfect friendship, especially since they’d said such hurtful things.
I was a freshman in high school, and I felt like I didn’t have a friend in the world, all because of Gossip — informal talk or stories about other people’s private lives, perhaps unkind or not true.
The tongue can be our worst enemy. Gossip harms confidence and separates close friends. It’s like a sharp knife, cutting one’s self-respect into pieces. When we say unkind things about others, we’re sticking knives into their hearts.
So how was I to act next When Joanna and Andrea pretended our friendship hadn’t changed, I thought of attacking them back. But instead, I told them directly that they had hurt me. Joanna started crying and Andrea was speechless. I knew they were both sorry for what they had said. They apologized, and I forgave them. Sure, things were a little uncomfortable at first, but soon enough everything was back to the way it had been before.
I still deal with gossip, sometimes as a receiver and sometimes as a sharer. But the more I learn about love, the more I realize the importance of encouraging others — something gossip never does.
4. What can we conclude from the second paragraph
A. Joanna and Andrea were grateful that the writer was their friend.
B. Joanna and Andrea made fun of the writer’s basketball performances.
C. Joanna and Andrea were unhappy about the writer being on the team.
D. Joanna and Andrea did not think the writer was the coach’s favourite.
5. How did the writer respond to her friends’comments about her
A. She decided to fight back immediately.
B. She told them frankly how she felt.
C. She found it awkward to speak to them.
D. She pretended that nothing had happened.
6. What is the writer’s reaction to gossip
A. Positive. B. Negative.
C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
7. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Gossip is definitely a sticking knife into people’s hearts.
B. We have to be patient when people gossip about our friends.
C. We can’t escape the world with gossip, but love offers a guiding hand.
D. We should be careful around our friends since they may cheat us sometimes.
Psychological avoidance (心理回避) or avoiding emotions, a common way to escape painful and uncomfortable thoughts, feelings or situations, can harm the emotional well - being and personal growth of high school freshmen. Actually, psychological avoidance can lead to increased levels of anxiety and stress. Avoiding fears and worries only allows them to grow stronger.
By avoiding challenging situations, it prevents students from developing important skills, limiting their opportunities for self-discovery and improvement. The famous author J. K. Rowling once said, “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so carefully that you might as well not have lived at all.”
Psychological avoidance directly affects how well students do in their studies. Freshmen who turn to avoidance will always procrastinate, or even miss deadlines. By avoiding the necessary efforts and tasks required for learning, students may struggle to gain information, reducing the opportunity to succeed in grades.
Psychological avoidance can also cause stress or discomfort to relationships. High school students may avoid discussing their feelings with friends or family members, leading to misunderstandings and a breakdown in communication. Instead of dealing with their emotions, they hold back or hide themselves. Students miss out on the chance to deepen their connections with friends, family and peers (同龄人), making it harder for them to form healthy relationships.
Psychological avoidance may provide comfort for a short period, but in the long run it can have negative impacts on our mental health, personal growth, academic performance, relationships and other aspects of life. Breaking free from avoidance behaviors is important for academic success and self-confidence, and recognizing the harmful effects of avoidance is the first step.
8. J. K. Rowling might agree that by avoiding challenging situations, ______.
A. we fail to discover our thoughts and feelings.
B. we can avoid failing at something more easily.
C. we miss out on valuable learning experiences.
D. we have opportunities to avoid fears and worries.
9. What does the underlined word “procrastinate” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Put off tasks. B. Escape from reality.
C. Miss out on chances. D. Get out of control.
10. How does psychological avoidance affect students’ ability to form healthy relationships
A. It leads to difficult discussions.
B. It stops their connections with others.
C. It makes them fail to make new friends.
D. It causes them to escape further communication.
11. What will the following paragraph probably talk about
A. The harmful effects of psychological avoidance.
B. The forms of psychological avoidance behaviors.
C. The strategies of overcoming psychological avoidance.
D. The importance of breaking free from avoidance behaviors.
D
What makes a person a giver or a taker The idea of “give vs. take” takes shape in all interactions and relationships of our lives. We’re either giving advice, making time for people, or we’re on the receiving end. We keep changing between the two based on different situations on a daily basis, if not an hourly one.
According to Adam Grant, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, most people are matchers. They make careful observations on takers and make it a point for them to pay something back. They hate to see people who act so generously towards others not receive any rewards. Actually, most matchers will try hard to promote and support givers so that they can get the good they should get.
Is there a gender(性别) factor that plays a part in this A study led by Hannah Riley Bowles, a professor at Harvard University, focused on this question. She asked 200 senior managers to sit down in pairs where one person would act as the boss and the other as a worker to discuss pay promotions. Male “workers” asked for an average pay of $146k while the females asked for only $141k. But why did they not bargain as hard as the men Simply because they were more likely to be givers.
As a woman, I do enjoy the act of giving up my time, my knowledge, and my care and attention to others. I don’t expect anything in return, but I do tend to pull myself away when I feel like I’m not being appreciated. I also tend to get upset when I see a loved one’s continuous actions of kindness go unnoticed. So, it’s safe to say I’m 50% giver, 35% matcher and 15% taker.
I do know someone, however, who is 99% giver. They’re constantly giving their time, sharing valuable ideas and going out of their way for everyone who crosses their path. Although they’ve changed the lives of many people, they rarely see any of it returned. But the universe is slowly repaying them; they’re now extremely successful, well known for what they do.
12. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Most people think they are givers.
B. People are not always givers or takers.
C An individual is born to be a giver or a taker.
D. Few differences exist between givers and takers.
13. Why do matchers want takers to pay something back
A. They hate themselves for being givers.
B. They see no point in giving generously.
C. They want to balance giving and taking.
D. They do not like being treated differently.
14. What did Hannah’s study focus on
A. The role of giving and taking in jobs.
B. The gender difference in giving and taking.
C. The role of men and women in society.
D. The pay difference between women and men.
15. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Giving or Taking: the Balance of Human Interaction
B. Tips on How to Achieve Success Through Giving
C. Are You Giving Too Much in Your Relationships
D. Gender and Giving: Why Are Women Willing to Give

My parents do a lot of embarrassing things! Usually, it’s my dad who sings silly songs or tells jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mother who played the embarrassing-parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, then my mom said, “I know the perfect song and dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t”, my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer. My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Mom,” I said on our way home, “Are you sure this is such a good idea ” “Of course!” she said. “If we want your school Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.” She laughed, “We will have fun!”
“OK, kids!” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early today because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing in the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest hat. “I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said, “I’m going to teach you a fun little song-and-dance performance I learned a few years ago. Here goes!” Oh please, oh please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill, or a power failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself-and me!
But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“I can’t believe this is happening” was all I could think.

【答案】例文
Dear Peter,
You are a celebrity in aiding those who are in trouble because of personal life and work. I’m writing to ask you for a favor and hope you will be kind enough to give me some instructions.
Recently, Linda, my best friend from my childhood, didn’t treat me the way before. What made our relationship less close was an accidental argument on how to get on well with parents. We hold quite different opinions on that. Since then, we have seldom spoken to each other, which really makes me sad and depressed. I am at such a loss over what I can do to make up and in need of your help. I will be extremely grateful if you could give me some advice.
Looking forward to your early reply. Best wishes for you.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

My mom turned out to be very good at performing.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One Possible Version
“I can’t believe this is happening” was all I could think. I closed my eyes, covered my ears and shrank as low as I possibly could in my chair. After a few seconds, though. I gathered courage to uncover one ear and peek through a half-open eye. That’s when I saw the expression of pure joy on my mom’s face. She was having so much fun that I couldn’t help smiling. My classmates clapped and cheered, and I heard someone say, “Wow! Arizona’s mother is pretty talented!”
My mom turned out to be very good at performing. She was also good at teaching us the song and the dance steps. too. We learned quickly. By the time of the fair, I was actually proud of her for putting herself out there for us kids. Our performance at the Winter Fair was a huge success. As we drove home, I said to my mom, “I’m really glad you volunteered to help my class with the performance.” My mom reached back and squeezed my hand. “Thanks for saying that. I can see why you might have been embarrassed, but I had such a great time.”
