My oldest child, Emma, just returned to campus after a long holiday break to finish up her last period of college. These days, friends and family have begun flooding me with one question: What is she going to do after graduation
The job market is, after all, awfully tough. Just this month the Federal Reserve Bank published a study showing that “recent graduates are increasingly working in low-paid jobs or working part-time.” The bright spot, according to the study, is for students who majored (主修) in STEM— science, technology, engineering and mathematics — areas in which recent graduates “have tended to do relatively well”.
But Emma is a student of the humanities (人文) at a small college. She’s an American Studies major with a focus on the politics and culture of food. For quite a while, I think her field of study is so fashionable right now that I’m not the least bit worried she will find a good job. Yet the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve decided to be honest. “I’m not sure what Emma is going to do,” I now say. “But she’s gotten a great education and has really found her interest. — and I know those things will serve her well over the course of her life.”
Nowadays, more and more universities and colleges are being measured by the salaries of their recent graduates. In this climate, encouraging your kid to study the humanities, seems, at best, unwise or, at worst, unconcerned with earning a living. But a college is not a vocational (职业) school. And promoting STEM subjects should not be society’s only answer to helping the next generation grow in a competitive world.
From the beginning, we never urged Emma to pick a college or a major with an eye on its expected return on money, as more and more families are doing. To Emma, what really matters will be something that we may not be able to measure for quite a long time: Emma’s contribution to the world and how happy she is in it.
4. The author’s friends and family _________.
A. are worried about Emma’s safety
B. have been worrying about the flood
C. are concerned about Emma’s future
D are worried about the job market
5. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. The number of the graduates is increasing.
B. STEM graduates can be better employees.
C. STEM graduates are in relatively greater demand.
D. More and more graduates like to do a part-time job.
6. Why did Emma choose a major in the humanities
A. Because she is interested in it.
B. Because her mother told her to.
C. Because it is increasingly popular.
D. Because she wants further education.
7. According to the author what matters most in choosing a major is that _________.
A. it should be among the STEM
B. it should be fashionable and interesting
C. it should allow a good job and a high salary
D. it should bring achievements and happiness
C
Chinese hit video game Black Myth: Wukong has taken the gaming world by storm, selling more than 10 million copies across all platforms in just three days after its release.
The game is inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. In it, players take the role of the Destined One, setting off for adventures to collect six Relics that once belonged to Sun Wukong and challenge the Celestial Court.
Drawing on a rich heritage of nearly 1,000 years of Chinese culture, the game’s storyline and characters have proven difficult to understand for many players from western countries. For instance, a player shared on social media that their lack of familiarity with Journey to the West led to them consistently missing hidden treasures, finally resulting in repeated failures during a boss fight in Chapter 2. Meanwhile, some players feel overwhelmed by names like Erlang Shen and Lingxuzi, which can be difficult to pronounce for those unfamiliar with Chinese phonetics.
To bridge these cultural divides, one enthusiast wrote a 200-page outline detailing Sun Wukong’s abilities across all 100 chapters of Journey to the West. Many others immersed themselves in the epic by checking out forums, TV shows, anime, manga and online encyclopedias.
Through this process, western players have not only refined their gaming skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for Sun Wukong and Journey to the West.
“Although many people might compare Sun Wukong to Western superheroes, I believe they are different,” said Patrick from the US. “Sun Wukong has a carefree and independent nature, unlimited by the need to set a good example for others like Spider-Man, who by contrast follows principles like ‘with great power comes great responsibility’.”
Journey to the West offers a comprehensive narrative that covers a very dangerous journey, numerous encounters and the exploration of various cultures, making it a rich source for diverse storytelling types and cultural backgrounds.
Perhaps these are some of the key reasons why Journey to the West has been translated into over a dozen languages, with more than 60 versions available worldwide.
8. What is the Destined One in Paragraph 2
A. The nickname of Sun Wukong in the game.
B. The fictional main character of this hit game.
C. One of the adventures to collect the six Relics.
D. One of the six Relics belonging to the Celestial Court.
9. What does the underlined word “bridge” in paragraph 4 most likely mean
A. Get rid of. B. Take control of. C. Keep track of D. Take advantage of.
10. What can be learned about the game from the passage
A. It has gradually gained popularity among players worldwide.
B. Its original character Sun Wukong is similar to western superheroes.
C. It has been translated into many languages with numerous versions available worldwide.
D. It is rather challenging for western players due to their unfamiliarity with Chinese culture.
11. What does the text mainly talk about
A. A Chinese hit video game and its original novel Journey to the West.
B. Reasons behind the success of Chinese video game Black Myth: Wukong.
C. The cultural impact and western players’ reception of a Chinese hit video game.
D. Challenges and benefits Black Myth: Wukong brings to the spread of Chinese culture.
D
We all know that our body language can give off signals to those around us about how we’re truly feeling. Crossed arms or closed body language suggests that we are feeling defensive (防御的) and we didn’t really believe what we’re listening to. Walking here and there suggests that we’re bored. And poor eye contact can suggest that we’re lying.
One major development in the field of body language that hit the headlines is the “power pose.” This is a theory put forward in 2011 by U.S. social psychologists Amy Cuddy, Dana Carney and Andy Yap. They proposed that when you pretend to be powerful, you are more likely to actually feel powerful.
What the theory suggests is that the simple act of holding a powerful pose can have powerful impact. For example, sitting with your legs up on the desk and arms held behind your head can raise your androgen levels and lower your cortisol (皮质醇) levels. Androgen is the hormone that affects dominance (控制); cortisol is the stress hormone. The study assessed participants’ hormone levels before and after they held high-power and low-power poses.
Just as a male gorilla beats his chest to tell his dominance, humans can use body language to enhance their confidence, increase feelings of power, and lower their stress levels. These findings build on several psychological studies suggesting that some aspects of body language can change your emotional state. For instance, someone nodding “yes” to you can make you easier to persuade, and when you smile, you can feel more positive.
So, how can powerful poses help us in the workplace Well, the study proposes that, simply by striking a powerful pose, you can better prepare yourself for difficult or stressful situations. Perhaps you’ve got a presentation that you’re nervous about giving, or a job interview coming up. Holding a power pose, even in private, can help you to approach these events in a confident and less-stressed way. In contrast, a weak pose with closed body language can make you perform poorly.
12. If one pretends to be strong, _________.
A. he is hiding his scare B. he may need others’ help
C. he is more likely to feel strong D. he may doubt what he is listening to
13. How will people feel if they have high cortisol
A. Confident. B. Stressed.
C. Bored. D. Defensive.
14. Why are the examples mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To highlight the truth of the power pose. B. To show the body language of gorillas.
C. To persuade people to be more positive. D. To explain the changes in body language.
15. What may be the writer’s suggestion for working
A. Keeping calm in difficult situations.
B. Taking part in formal events actively.
C. Using a powerful pose to help ourselves.
D. Using more body language in job interviews.

When we think of children's drawings, they often strike us as whimsical (异想天开的), playful, and not always the most realistic. A drawing by a young girl in Clearfield, Utah, however, will become a reality through her determination, creativity and the help of her city's Parks & Recreation department.
Eleven-year-old Lucy is fond of drawing. One day, she was drawing in a neighborhood playground and her younger sister was playing with their parents. Suddenly, her sister fell down and cried because of the unreasonable design of the playground. Luckily, her younger sister wasn't injured.
So at that time Lucy was eager to make a plan for designing a new neighborhood playground, hoping it would be safer for her younger sister and others to play on in the future.
With only a piece of paper, a box of crayons, and her imagination and creativity, she drew the design for her dream playground. Only half an hour later, she finished her painting with a brand-new design of the playground. What an amazing design! And her colorful sketches (素描) feature a slide, a rock wall, and a rope climb, which would catch the attention of any people.
After finishing her drawing, she showed her painting to her parents and told them that it would be wonderful if that could come true. Her parents were surprised at her amazing and creative painting with the reasonable design of the neighborhood playground.
“After hearing what you said and seeing your initiative and detail, I was wondering how we can make your dream happen, ” her father said to Lucy.
“A new neighborhood playground for the park right by our house will be built, and our city's Parks & Recreation department is asking for a new design for the playground on the Internet, ” her mother said.
“Wow, wonderful! But how can we show my drawing to the department Can we take a photo and send it by email ” Lucy asked.

From the beginning, we never urged Emma to pick a college or a major with an eye on its expected return on money, as more and more families are doing. To Emma, what really matters will be something that we may not be able to measure for quite a long time: Emma’s contribution to the world and how happy she is in it.

【答案】One possible version:
“Yes! Photo, email! I know how to do it,” her father said with a smile. He took a clear photo of Lucy’s brilliant drawing and helped her craft a concise email to the Parks & Recreation department. Together, they carefully worded the message to convey Lucy’s passion and the practicality of her design. They eagerly sent off the email, hopes high and fingers crossed, sharing Lucy’s vision with the city officials who could make it a reality.
A few days later, there was an email with good news from the department. Lucy and her family gathered around the computer, excitement bubbling in the air. The department praised Lucy’s creativity and thoughtful design. They were thrilled to announce that Lucy’s playground design would serve as the blueprint for the new playground project. Overjoyed, Lucy couldn’t contain her excitement, imagining her younger sister and all the neighborhood children playing safely on the very playground she had dreamt and designed.
