Josefa Marin went to New York from Mexico in 1987, supporting her daughter back home with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factory. With that small income, she had to collect recyclables, trading in cans for five cents each.
When the clothing factory closed down in the late 2000s, she became a full-time recycler picking up cans and bottles to make ends meet.
Marin’s story is not unique. Millions around the world make a living from picking through waste and reselling it — a vital role that keeps waste manageable. In New York City, the administrative department collects only about 28 percent of the cans that could be recycled. Rubbish collectors keep millions of additional recyclables out of landfills every year.
Yet collectors are ruled out by government policies. The United States Supreme Court in 1988 stated that household garbage is public property once it’s on the street. That enables police to search rubbish for evidence, but that protection hasn’t always been extended to recyclers. And in places like New York City, which is testing city-owned locked containers to hide garbage from rats, containers are made clearly inaccessible for collectors.
“There’s value in the waste, and we feel the value should belong to the people, not the city or the corporations,” says Ryan Castalia, director of a nonprofit recycling and community center in Brooklyn.
Recognized or not, waste pickers have long been treated with respect. Marin recalls an occasion when someone living next to a building where she was collecting cans threw water at her. “I recycle waste, but it doesn’t mean I am less of a person than anyone else,” she says.
Some governments are starting to realize that protecting the environment and humanity go hand in hand. The United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, for example, calls for an end to poverty and all the risks it brings.
4. What is the author’s purpose in talking about Marin
A. To highlight waste collectors’ role. B. To mirror laid-off workers’ hardship.
C. To praise her dedication to her daughter. D. To demonstrate the seriousness of unemployment.
5. How does the author show the importance of waste pickers’ work
A. By contrasting. B. By providing examples.
C. By giving definitions. D. By cause-effect analysis.
6. What would Marin agree with
A. Business is business. B. The early bird catches the worm.
C No job is noble or humble. D. Every coin has two sides.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Josefa Marin’s Struggle: Surviving on Recycling in New York
B. Environmental contributions: How Waste Pickers Reduce Landfill Waste
C. Legal Exclusion and Social Disrespect: The Hardships of Urban Recyclers
D. Waste Pickers: Essential Environmental Actors Fighting Poverty and Injustice

If you can, stop what you’re doing, and breathe in through your nose. What do you smell Well, if you’re lucky, it’s morning coffee. But for a lot of us, the answer might not be all that much. Researchers say many people are deprived of smells and that we’ve come to expect a flavourless world. However, a new study suggests our learning and memory might be well served if we were exposed to more smells as we age.
Michael Leon is a neurobiologist. He’s a professor at the University of California. As an experiment, he gave a few dozen healthy, older adults diffusers, machines that release smells in a room, and also different essential oils to go in them. Each night, a different smell — rose, orange, lemon, and lavender — would fill the bedroom.
Over the course of six months, there was a 226% improvement on a learning and memory test among testees who slept with a strong smell compared with those who diffused distilled (蒸馏) water every night. Leon said the smells were stimulating the memory centers of people’s brains as they slept. Now, the study was small, just 43 people. “Still,” Leon said, “it is consistent with the understanding of how smell is connected to learning and memory.”
Most people living in modern society actually lack the smell stimulation that their brains need. This living in a smell-free world, combined with the wear and tear that comes with aging, means that around the time people turn 60, their sense of smell and memory start declining together. Leon’s study tries to stimulate the brain with as many smells as possible.
The idea is that it will keep the memory centers of your brain in good condition throughout life and perhaps prevent memory loss older in life. Leon said that while the study is not yet very comprehensive and has a long way to go, he thinks there’s enough evidence for people to try it at home. “Almost everyone can get more smells into their lives,” he added.
8. Which is closest in meaning to “are deprived of” in paragraph 1
A. Are taken away from. B. Are thirsty for.
C. Are particular about. D. Are familiar with.
9 What can we know from Leon’s study
A. Sleep is strongly associated with memory functions.
B. Smells can help stimulate people’s ability to learn.
C. Water may activate the brain’s memory-related areas.
D. Memory decline often begins before age 60.
10. What is Leon’s attitude towards his finding
A. Critical. B. Unclear. C. Subjective. D. Positive.
11. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. The instructions for a medical device. B. An essay on a popular science website.
C. A report on the influential factors of memory. D. A study on the smells for a better sleep.
D
Strings of letters have recently been flooding the Chinese izens have embraced the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) personality test, using its distinctive combinations of letters to define and classify themselves and others, causing the formation of active online communities. Initially designed as a self-assessment tool to outline personality types and preferences, the MBTI has found enormous popularity in China.
The MBTI categorizes individuals using four pairs of characteristics: introversion (I) (内向) or extroversion (E) (外向), sensing (S) or intuition (N), thinking (T) or feeling (F), and judging (J) or perceiving (P). This leads to distinct four-letter combinations, like “ISTJ” or “INFP”. The values “E” and “I” have especially attracted public interest. Those who exhibit extroversion (E) characteristics are now humorously described as outgoing, talkative, wild, and usually optimistic. They are often playfully called “social gangsters” due to their characters. In contrast, those with introversion (I) are shown to be quiet, reserved, reflective, and socially anxious.
In the playful teasing, these eight seemingly simple letters have promoted deeper self-awareness and even developed a sense of friendship on social media platforms. Individuals discover their strengths and humorously acknowledge their odd behavior. This new-found self-awareness not only aids in understanding their fundamental values but also offers a way to deal with the common unease that bothers today’s youth. Many find comfort in thinking, “My ongoing anxiety, oversensitivity, and self-doubt come from being an INFP. Such characteristics are typical of this personality type; thus, I’m perfectly normal.”
Netizens often humorously note: “In everyday life, during social events, I switch between introversion and extroversion. At work, I initially act extroverted but gradually become more introverted. When I see someone I like, I’m extroverted in my head but in reality, I’m all introverted.” Haidilao Hotpot restaurants, known for their fancy birthday celebrations, sometimes make customers feel awkward. Their typical birthday song goes, “Say goodbye to all worries, and embrace all joys.” It’s a show meant for the extra-social. So, if an extrovert is invited to such a celebration, they might humorously exclaim, “I can’t take it. I’ve become introverted in the face of even more extroverted individuals.”
12. What is the original function of the MBTI personality test
A. To define and classify individuals.
B. To establish dynamic online communities.
C. To categorize Internet users’ behavior systematically.
D. To evaluate the types of the character and preferences,
13. Which of the following is most likely to be a “social gangster”
A. An adventurous person. B. An analytical person.
C. A sociable person. D. A creative person.
14. Understanding MBTI types can help to ________.
A. draw public attention with humor
B. recognize and accept the personal character
C. comfort individuals with personality weaknesses
D. gain self-awareness and correct inappropriate behaviors
15. Why does the author mention birthday celebrations in Haidilao Hotpot restaurants
A. To clarify why extroverted individuals are frequently invited to celebrations.
B. To show personalities can change on different occasions.
C. To demonstrate that birthday songs may lead to customer embarrassment.
D. To emphasize the widespread popularity of birthday celebrations.

Watercolor painting is a fascinating art form cherished by artists worldwide. It involves using pigments (颜料)mixed with water to create transparent layers on paper, offering a unique blend of control and spontaneity. ____16____ Thus, even beginners can achieve stunning effects with minimal equipment. This medium encourages experimentation, making it ideal for students to explore their creativity.
____17____ Mastering techniques like perspective and color blending is essential. Perspective helps artists depict depth and dimension, while color blending requires understanding primary pigments such as cadmium red or ultramarine blue. Practice in these areas builds a solid foundation. Moreover, the choice of brushes affects the outcome significantly — soft brushes create smooth washes, while stiff ones add texture.
Watercolor’s transparency demands careful planning. Artists must consider the paper’s absorbency and the order of layering. ____18____ This process can be challenging but rewarding. For instance, wet-on-wet techniques allow colors to flow freely, producing dreamy effects, whereas wet-on-dry methods offer precise lines. Such decisions influence the final composition, which is the overall arrangement of elements in a painting.
Beyond technical skills, watercolor fosters personal expression. ____19____ Many artists find it therapeutic, as it allows emotions to surface through fluid strokes. Experimenting with abstract styles or realistic scenes helps develop a unique artistic voice.
Ultimately, watercolor painting is not just a hobby; it is a journey of discovery. ____20____.
A. Besides, it requires patience because mistakes are hard to cover up.
B. Unlike oil paints, watercolors dry quickly and are portable.
C. Therefore, consistent practice is key to improving brush control.
D. First, fundamental skills include learning perspective and color theory.
E. It connects deeply with inner feelings, reducing stress effectively.
F. Additionally, using digital tools can replace traditional methods.
G. It will cultivate a lifelong appreciation for the subtle beauty in everyday life.

On the first day of school, I stared in awe at the huge buildings. This high school was definitely bigger than the one I had previously attended.
This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in St. Louis. I had decided the night before that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I even bought a new outfit and had my hair styled just so the first day would be perfect.
Scared, yet anxious to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs to the front door. The halls were packed with kids yelling and laughing and telling stories of their summer adventures. My first class was geometry, but where was that
I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new You look lost. Do you need help My name is Diane. What’s yours ” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names. I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite conversation the whole way. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK, and I hope your day goes all right.”
I said thanks and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I decided that this guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right next to him. I said, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m new here.” He said, “Johnny.”
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置答题。
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me ”

I’m writing to see if you could contribute an article to the “Culture and Lifestyle” column of our school’s English newspaper.
The column enjoys considerable popularity among us students, whose objective is to introduce diverse cultures and lifestyles from various nations to broaden our horizons. We are eager to have an article about how Irish people spend their holidays and the life of Irish high school students. You can write anything relevant so long as it is interesting and informative. 500 words would be fine. Would you be so kind as to send your draft to me by November 28
It would be highly appreciated if you could help us out. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,

【47题答案】
【答案】One Possible Version:
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me ” With a frown, he looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom. As they were walking out I heard him say, “Did you guys see that new girl trying to get into our group That outfit was too strange.” They all laughed and some of them turned around and stared at me. My face hot with shame, I stood stock-still, not believing what had just happened.
Just at that time, someone came up and tapped me on the shoulder. It was Diane. Like a ray of sunshine, the big smile on her face swept away my gloom. I struggled to hold my feelings back and told her what I had encountered. A gleam of concern in her eyes, she said she was sorry and offered to find my next class. At that moment I realized how wrong I was in wanting to only be friends with popular people. Maybe I shouldn’t decide whether a person is worth being my friend or not by their reputation, but by who they are.
